The Bielsa Method - 3-3-1-3 System || Leeds United Tactical Analysis - Part 1

Part 1 of 3 - Marcelo Bielsa's use of the 3-3-1-3 Formation, with his high focus on physical performance and positional play, across his career in club and international soccer, has proven to be an eye opening insight into the mind which is Marcelo Bielsa.
This is my interpretation of how he uses this this season with Leeds UTD

  • Crazy to think what Bielsa could have achieved if he had technical players and clinical finishers. The amount of chances they created without a goal is mind blowing

  • wow, this was exactly how Argentina played in the 2002 qualifiers. Simply unbelievable to watch. Out of 18 games, 13 were wins, the only team to stop them twice was Paraguay (2 draws), then they lost to Brazil, drew in Uruguay, with Bielsa screaming at his players to stop sitting back (Argentina were already qualified and a draw was enough for Uruguay) and a heroic last gasp 3-3 in the Bolivian high altitude. 20 years have passed and I can categorically say I have never enjoyed or seen such a campaign as that with the quality of his players on offer (Simeone, Crespo, Sorin, Gallardo, Batistuta, Kily Gonzalez, to name but a few.)

    @Iberotimuka@Iberotimuka3 жыл бұрын
    • That was one of the strongest Argentinian selections ever assembled, and so it was a scandal that they didn't go farther in the 2002 World Cup. Bielsa is brilliant, without a doubt, but that tournament was not a great one for him. At least he learned from it.

      @wiseonwords@wiseonwords3 жыл бұрын
    • @@wiseonwords yes, it was certainly an anticlimax, but it also proves that it isn't just a game of pure football, England and Sweden squeezed Argentina out by playing a pressing game used successfully by Paraguay in the qualifiers, you have to be tactically astute and he simply didn't have a plan B or a response to the opposition cancelling him out. There is another aspect as well, and maybe it's being over harsh but I get the feeling Bielsa is so intense that when he should be laying off he overloads which leads his players to be exhausted. It happened with Argentina in 2002, Bilbao and Leeds 2018/2019. In that sense I'm convinced the lockdown was a Godsend and ultimately saved him. I really really hope he finds a balance and can flourish in the Premier league. Managers like him are particularly good at helping otherwise average players believe and reach their potential, similarly look at Poch's work at Southampton and Spurs and how that helped England at Russia 2018.

    • @@Iberotimuka Realmente ese es el problema de Bielsa. Suele utilizar casi siempre el mismo 11. Mi equipo , Athletic Club ( liga española,) hizo una gran temporada llegando a dos finales, la Copa de España y la Europa League. Pero el equipo llego tan fundido que perdió las dos finales. No sé si Leeds U. tendrá profundidad de banquillo o habrá gran diferencia entre titulares y suplentes. Si puede dosificar el equipo haciendo rotaciones creo que puede acabar entre los 5 primeros. A pesar de las dos finales perdidas siempre quedará en nuestro recuerdo los dos partidos ganados al Man U. En eliminatoria de Europa League. El mismo Ferguson dijo que ningún equipo le había dominado tanto en su propia casa. Animo Leeds carajo!!

  • The game is all about triangles and movement which means running hard. There’s a saying that when someone receives a pass there should always be an option open for him to pass to. When I coached I used to say that if there wasn’t at least two options open then your team mates were cheating on you ( being lazy). When not in possession I got them to press hard and in packs ‘like rabid dogs’. The lads who I coached were all good footballers who had been released by pro clubs but the style was intense and they couldn’t always sustain the demand The MB system looks simple but it is incredibly complex and can only be achieved through constant repetition of drills. What I also notice is that invariably each player can move and cover a colleague and in that respect it is like the total football of Holland during the 70’s. Great video, well presented.

    @Villamartin26@Villamartin263 жыл бұрын
    • it is originally a dutch formation indeed, or a modification to their 70s strategy. even cruyff used it when coaching ajax. in my opinion, iniesta's barcelona and their famous rapid ball circulation brought it to perfection. to me this 3-3-1-3 is the essence of football. as you said, no "cheaters" nor divas waiting for the ball to arrive are allowed. magic is permitted as long as you commit to your team, where everyone works the same.

  • This tactic is amazing and beautiful to watch but it needs more physique and all Bielsa teams before having this issue. They had the best start of the season and after that players can't reach the end of season in good form. I hope things change with him in the premiership next season

    @maroinecherkaoui9604@maroinecherkaoui96043 жыл бұрын
    • You missed the point: The reason why “all bielsa teams have this issue” and not everyone else is because it’s very energy DEMANDING, and that is the reason why you cannot press the whole game for the entire season: it wears out the players. And that’s a bad thing for Klopp’s Liverpool: he knew this so he chose to do it in INTERVALS. Press for a few minutes then conserve energy. 2nd half press for a few minutes then conserve energy. That’s the reason why Leeds is no longer in the premier league. You cannot expect 90 minutes of pressing for the entire season. His players will be tired at the end of the season and teams will take advantage of you.

    @greyssonpotter8382@greyssonpotter83822 жыл бұрын
  • you've misunderstood a couple things. firstly, the formation starts as a simple 4-1-4-1, and morphs into a 3-3-1-3. but the lines are wrong. The first 3 is the two CBs and the holding midfielder (Kalvin) dropping deep and splitting the CBs wide. The central 3 is the CM (Klich) and the two WBs pushing right up to support the attack, the midfielder drifting to support the width, and the WBs supporting the attack, creating overloads in the wide areas. The 1 is the Enganche. Used to be Saiz but is now typically Hernandez. Then the front 3 is correct, the forward and the two wingers, who stretch the play super wide. Also, you spelled Kalvin's name wrong. Nicely made video though :)

    @control2XS@control2XS3 жыл бұрын
    • That is literally what the video is about... their flexible attacking shape. Either Phillips drops in or Ayling drops down to allow Phillips to remain in front of the back 3. All the things you have mentioned are in the video... so not sure what has been misunderstood.

    • @@mford9435 lol typo, I'm on my phone, thanks for pointing it out I'll correct it :) I mean true, but that's Bielsa/Buelsa's callback to total football, he expects players to be able to swap positions and be comfortable. When Ayling is in the 3, it's not because the right back is dropping in, it's because Ayling isnt the "rightback" at that moment, typically because White has gone marauding etc.

But all tactics have problems and this is one of the almost flawless ones. I still prefer 4 3 3 with false 9 but I guess it always depends on your equip, best players in each position, best equip in each tactic.

  • I think you’ve missed the mark here as this is more an analysis of Leeds possession tactics than the 3313. Some of your example clips come from games where they’re running 433. 3313 or 3diamond3 is a defensive set up used by Leeds to counter the opponents 4diamond2. This allows them to man mark in the middle while remaining +1 in the back. Examples include games vs Hull City, Middlesborough and Luton town. In possession Leeds does similar stuff from all their defensive setups.

    • Appreciate the thought, You're correct, I am analyzing thier in-possession structure, which's core shape resembles a 3-3-1-3 most often (with many interchanges). I feel that they do primarily use this formation but has a lot of variants where it can change into a 4-3-3 or different. I guess its a game of opinions at the end of the day.

    • Mford94 To quote Bielsa’s opinion “a fixed system is one thing and moments of the game are another” I’ve seen leads use 433,3d3,343 as fixed defensive systems this season. With the insane amount of player rotation that they do, they adopt a myriad of shapes while in possession based on the mobility of the game. For example they sometimes have4,3,2 players on their back line in possession. A good player to look for to identify a shape is Alioski who is only used as a left full back in a 433 or wingback of the 343. When they use 3d3 (3313) they play no wingbacks and go with 4 midfielders, usually Dallas,Klich,Phillips,Hernandez. Both of these fixed systems change in possession based on the mobility of the game. For example, from 433, Phillips sometimes drops as a left false fullback allowing Alioski to move up the flank in the midfield line. After a transition, they’ll return to their original fixed spots for defensive duties (unless they’re counter pressing or swapping defensive duties based on the speed of the transition)

    • Don't take it wrong but I don't think he will ever go at Chelsea. He never went into a big club with loads of money, he'd feel dirty. He's like a white knight tryin' to slay a dragon, he will go for a lesser team with big passion to overcome a challenge. I could see him in Dortmund / Napoli / Schalke 04 or maybe West Ham if it doesn't work with Leeds. I'd love to see him in Barcelona though. PS: I might have missed some potential clubs.. sorry

  • thought they play 1-4-1-4-1 when in possession playing out from back CM drops in between the cb,s with both fb pushed high,ya could agree that the 3 in middle play with 1 in front and 3 up front but in simple terms 1-4-1-4-1 would be the formation,nice work tho,love theyre passing patterns and positional play where theres never more than 2 players in the 5 lanes
