  • You folks are so sweet! (What life is like living with a tech-nerd! My better-half would agree! ) However, I better understand the individual remotes, so I am sticking with them to diagnose individual issues. I too am NOT a tech nerd, and I want control over each device so I can see first-hand what each device is doing. Meanwhile though, I have about 80-90% integration with my contro4 system wand but still can revert back to individual wands when I need to which - has happened! if things get totally wonky, it means a call to my control4 integrator whereupon he needs an explanation as to the individual issue so he can fix it at his end. Does not happen very often BUT there is still a need for analysis.

    • What really struck me, as your better-half pointed out . . . is that button “identity” is not as “intuitive” as the manufacturer thinks it is. Recall, she could not immediately identify the “off-button”. That says and means - alot!! Engineers can get themselves into a “techie-bubble” and “assume” things or take for granted things the uninitiated clearly do not recognize. For example, my Control4 wand has the word “off” very clearly marked right on relevant button. Maybe Sofabaton should take some instruction from Control4?!

  • This video is funny, but very realistic. I have had similar issues handing harmony remotes to family members, both men and women! I think most have figured out how to use that remote, but I don’t know what to do when it gives up the ghost and I have to switch to a different universal remote solution.

  • Great review. I've had the same experience many times with my wife. The Sofa Baton looks really close to what I want - but if there are important buttons that it can't learn, then it's of no use to me. For the price, it's worth a try. My old MX-780 is working, but its RF performance is really bad in the modern world. I need something new. I'll likely order the X1S after your formal review - so long as you don't reveal any huge problems.

    @Geerladenlad@GeerladenladАй бұрын
    • That’s exactly what it does. We just had issues because we had a power outage earlier so the projector did not turn on. Had to unplug it and plug it back in. I had moved the IR sensor to the floor that was originally pointed at the Kaleidescape as I thought I was done filming. If you take a look at my walk-through of the SofaBaton, you will see if you can set up activities for your macros. One button to trigger that sequence of events.

I control most of my system with an app on my phone except for my PS3 which is my Blu-ray player. I have a Harmony remote, but my phone app is easier to use. If I ever get more equipment or new equipment I may look into a new universal remote.

I'm currently building my Atmos setup in my living room and I plan to have only one receiver, the Marantz Cinema 50 and one 75" TV, no external amps, dacs streamers etc. I think that's just ridiculous. If later on I need more power or channels I'll just upgrade to Cinema 30.

  • One thing I think you need to do on the Sofabaton is to quit thinking like the AV geek that all of us watching this are! Naming the activities with "Watch" then followed by the source, or "Listen to" then followed by the source are a great way to go. I also like to hide access to most of the controls of the original remotes, otherwise there are too many possibilities to get things wrong... ie: turn on tape monitor, etc, that then results in things not working without knowing a lot about AV gear! I really like the approach of, Choose an activity and push that button to turn everything on, or to change to those things on. Then having the remote give access to volume, mute, and controls of that source only are the way to go. Trying to make these systems "bullet proof" for spouses, is actually quite difficult. This is where Harmony was actually quite good, with their built in "Help" that would walk through fixing things. This is where solution like the Sofabaton and Unfolded Circle's Remote Two, are still behind. Such solutions can work well, but if someone doesn't fully understand what should be happening, that a pause waiting for something to complete before going on, etc... Spouses can totally desync everything to the point where it takes me a while to get it figured out! I'm holding onto my Harmony remotes with a death grip for now. I will do whatever it takes to keep them going. URC makes comparable solutions to Harmony, but as they won't share software with consumers, they are dead to me. I bought a URC MX-3000 when it first came out. After about a year, they decided they would no longer give consumers access to the software updates or IR databases. That is when I jumped from URC to Harmony, I've been happy with their solution ever since. These other solutions just lack the software polish that Harmony did.

  • 😂 gotta love you guys!! 👍🏾👍🏾 Excellent video as always Youthman! On a serious note, this is good for manufacturers to see how user friendly their devices are. Remotes such as the Sofabaton may seem straightforward for us HT enthusiasts to use and navigate, but people who may not have the same level of knowledge and experience with these devices may find them trickier to get accustomed to. Good job you were able to quickly troubleshoot the issues you had with the power and iR sensor. Thanks again 🫡

  • I am having nothing but problems with the X1S, and the tech support is not particularly helpful, talked to them on support chat but it was less then satisfactory. So got it 2 days ago and really I think it needs a lot of improvements in many areas. My biggest issue at the moment is the HUB will not learn commands 50% of the time. I am having a lot of problems with using it as a replacement, the software app is less then intuitive. My specific problem is even though they have database coding for all my equipment it does not like my Sony TV remote in particular. Out of the 12 or so buttons on the X1S about 5 work with the Sony TV. Problem is I can't train the buttons to do anything else since it wont learn the commands from the original remote. It needs a lot of development to replace the Harmony Elite IMO. Very dissatisfied at this point. BTW I am very tech savvy, build my own computers, set up my home theater DIY etc.

    @ksmit0111@ksmit0111Ай бұрын
    • I only had two of my remotes that it would not learn (madVR and Hisense). I find the app extremely intuitive, especially after using my Harmony Elite. What do you find about the app that is not intuitive?

      @Youthman@YouthmanАй бұрын
  • Got my Sofabaton X1S yesterday, been very disappointed at this point. Downloaded the database for a 2022 Sony TV and multiple buttons don't work correctly on the remote and unfortunately the hub refused to learn any commands from the original remote, so now what. Not very happy.

  • Why not just switch to Control 4. When my harmony died I picked up a C4 Halo Touch and a Core Lite and got everything programmed and working. I will say that C4 IP Controls everything in my theater and I have zero IR emitters in use and everything just works flawlessly. I love my Harmony but always had little issues and C4 has been the best upgrade for me. I also have the C4 App setup aswell and again a breeze to use.

    @ndgame5@ndgame5Ай бұрын
    • C4 requires an integrator to fully program it. Hard pass for me.

      @Youthman@YouthmanАй бұрын
    • There’s loop holes. I did my full setup without an integrator. But there is also a Home Edition of Composer. So even if you did have an integrator add your drivers you can take over with Home Edition and program it yourself.

      @ndgame5@ndgame5Ай бұрын
    • So what happens when you buy a new component? My understanding is you have to have your integrator add it. I need something that I can 100% program and update myself.

    • No, take a look at the walkthrough video. The issue we had was the power went out so my projector wasn’t turning on. Everything else powered up when she hit Watch Kaleidescape. After I unplugged and replugged in the projector, she could have hit Watch Kaleidescape again and it would have powered on the projector.

  • Michael, I laughed when I saw your headline, I can relate. I promise you, Jessica is 100% the same as my wife. I fully admit, I have a lot of stuff. I boiled it down so my wife had to push "on" for two different remotes. Oh my gosh, you would have thought it was on the same level as the moon landing. She could push ONE button to turn on the system, but TWO? TWO BUTTONS?? She didn't even try. I feel Jessica represents the MAJORITY of women out there, so stay strong Jessica against those complicated remotes in your attempt to watch TV in the home theater room. And "yes" I'll be getting one for my wife. 😎👍
