Whiplash is a 2014 American drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. It depicts the relationship between an ambitious jazz drumming student (Miles Teller) and an abusive instructor (J. K. Simmons).
Whiplash premiered in competition in the US Dramatic Category at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival on January 16, 2014, as the festival's opening film.[4] Sony Pictures Worldwide acquired the international distribution rights.[5] The film opened in limited release domestically in the United States and Canada on October 10, 2014, gradually expanding to over 500 screens and finally closing on March 26, 2015. The film grossed $49 million on a production budget of $3.3 million.
The film received widespread critical acclaim, with particular praise for Simmons's performance and Chazelle's screenplay. At the 87th Academy Awards, Whiplash won Best Film Editing (Tom Cross, ACE), Best Sound Mixing, and Best Supporting Actor for Simmons, and was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture.

You already have ads before your video from youtube. Don't put additional ads in between. And no, I'm not gonna do skillshare as I was very focused and the sudden ad in between just ruined the moment.
@@MohitYadav-qj4fl without sponsors this video wouldn't exist because it wouldn't be viable, but i respect your decision not to like it.
I've just realized how scary editing is, in that it can make a film a masterpiece or a trash. Whew! This lesson is a gem. 👏👏👏👏👏💯
Whiplash is an editing masterclass from start to finish. The Oscar was well deserved.
Almost none of this video is about how it was edited... mostly just about storytelling. Very interesting tho
exactly, i was like when's the editing part gonna start
that's also storytelling in editing, the build up could be so much different. But yeah, i get what you said
"Ok, so he marks an in-point there where he wants the shot to begin in his source window. Then he moves the cursor along to where he wants the shot to finish and he marks an outpoint. Then he moves to the timeline and creates an in-point at the end of the last shot. Then he hits insert, and voila, he has done an edit." That the sort of thing you're after?
The video is about editing, not how to edit. There's a very big difference in that editing is a storytelling mechanism and the process itself is a technical procedure.
@@nega9000 One of the stupider comments on KZhead, and there's some stiff competition. All you did was demonstrate that you do not understand the first thing about what editing actually is.
I imagine a scene when Fletcher goes "rushing or dragging?!" and neiman (or lets say another student in the future) goes "I was on my fucking TIME!!" and fletcher takes a step back and smiles
That would humanize Fletcher too much i think, i believe thee movie works best with Fletcher being as mean as it is possible
@@LuisSierra42 good point
The cuts between this film and RB to demonstrate what Damien and Tom were after were extremely effective. Excellent work
Hey, I just wanted to say thanks! I found your channel last night because I've been on a struggle to find any sort of work (over a year) and I was just looking for ways to improve my mindset on editing and how to approach it. I originally saw the video "WHAT IT TAKES To Edit Big TV Shows" and that video got me to start BINGING ALL your videos lol. It's always interesting to hear people's story in this industry because it's almost always unique. Hearing how Josh was doing weddings, then became an AE, and made a breakthrough from being nice to a PA was just amazing. Your channel has given me some sort of hope hearing stories like Josh and the one you mention of Tom in this video. Thanks again for the content and keep doing your thing!
This episode was AWESOME!!! I'm currently in the works of making my first doc, and episodes like this that dissect good editing in detail, and especially in a more casual, vlog format, makes it super diggestable. More of this, please!!
Love how you jumped the line in your own video when talking about about jumping the line ;) Kidding aside, your channel has become my favorite on moviemaking - well, my favorite with the late "Every Frame A Picture" channel. I've been a "videomaker" for 10 years now, and your podcast and videos gave me insights like no other on my work as an editor. It just make me want to edit stuff :) I'm glad you're finally tackling "Whiplash", which is the only movie I ever went to see three times in theatre, and is probably among my favorite of the last 20 years. Keep up the great work!
thank you so much for explaining the tension structure!!! more of this please:)
Another great video Sven. Loving the ‘coffee with editors’ concept. Would love to see more of these collaborations.
ur discussion is like a process and i really enjoyed it. watch and watch over and over again to understand the process.
I loved this and really learned a lot even in this short video. This was my first video about editing. Thank you for such insightful comments. I really like the two-person format.
Absolutely love this! Please do more of this!
Loved the new concept. Please do more!
When I first watched this film when I heard it was nominated for the oscar I was BLOWN away by the editing honestly- Simply amazing!
Really enjoyed this video and plan to watch many more. Thank you .
I definitely wanna see more of this. Great episode.
Great video guys, would definitely love to see more of these.
Very cool analysis loved it. Thanks for sharing guys!
I could watch you guys break down the whole film! Really enjoyed the insight!
The rising and falling tension is exactly how I felt watching this whole movie. I call it triggered anxiety. Lol
Good little format, I enjoyed watching this. Keep it up
great stuff guys. Conversation makes it much more interesting. Hope to some more of this setup. Best!
Is this a breakdown of the editing or the writing? I feel like we're discussing the layout of these scenes from a writer's perspective. No disrespect, I know it won an Oscar for editing and this is an editing channel, so I'm wondering why we're going through the choices the screenwriter made and not the specific cuts and why they are placed. Great movie and I'm genuinely interested.
While that is true to an extend, i feel the last draft of the script is done by the editor, especially how he can build and drop momentum at any time, and thereby engage the audience. That is what is mostly discussed. I feel if the choice of cuts are all that are left to an editor, it would make the process very dry and give too much importance to storyboard writer.
@@rahulrajeev3731 that's a fair sentiment. However this film was written and directed based on his original short film so I feel like many of these choices were in fact carefully chosen by the screenwriter. I don't mean to diminish the role of the editor in affecting the pace and feel of a scene. They cannot however create moments that are integral to character development, but enhance their apparent significance.
I love it! Whiplash has had a great impact on me when I saw it. I dived into the short as well and really thought about that movie for weeks. Now I feel like I want to rewatch it :) Thanks, Sven! BTW, podcast episode was great as well. Good job, Aaron!
Ever have a story in your mind, a screenplay you want to turn into a beautiful film, talk to A24, Focus features, even i will support the film.
It's a bit weird that I know what my feeling was when watching that movie only after I watch this breakdown. Great analysis!
I loved this episode Sven!!! Hope to see more of this coffee's with editors 😊😊
It's funny how much editing and writing have in common! My word!!!
That's a very interesting comparison to Raging Bull.
Brilliant breakdown!!!! Thank you so much for this
Awesome as always Sven!! Coffee with editors 👌 !!! Already downloaded the script, thank you. :)
This was a brilliant idea mate. Cheers! and keep them coming.
Nice new format Sven!
What a great video! Love this analysis. This is great content! Keep it up!
Loved this! Whiplash was the film that really cemented my love for editing and made me realise it was what I wanted to do. I've seen it so many times but I keep going back to it and it never feels old!
How have you found your career in editing so far? I want to get better at editing and wondering if it is a good career move?
I would like to see more videos like this. I like how you guys broke everything down
So... Bohemian Rhapsody award winning editing breakdown when?
How the hell that happened... Like really...
This one came five years later, my guess is 2023
Feureau kzhead.info/sun/Z8inaKqcZ4aPmKM/bejne.html
Feureau In my opinion, it shouldn’t have won best editing.
RAM i know right lol. I was so confused when it was even nominated and even more confused when it won. It was flashy but it didnt have great choices
Very nice and informative. I appricate all your hard work keep it coming!!
You guys are awesome. So interesting on how you guys break it down.
I love this editors conversation
Really enjoyed this while having my morning coffee
Not to be rude by any means, but isn't this more about the story rather than editing?
Editing is storytelling! :)
You are right. They talk about story
@@digitalarsenal5234 slow clap.... eat knowledge before opening your mouth
@@aaronxoxo jesus christ who tf asked for ur opinion?
The editing process starts at the script
Watching how movies are edited helps me edit my own youtube videos.
Exactly
This was so great. Thank you!
I enjoyed this video a lot! Hope you do more like it
subbed and i knew there was a reason i loved that movie so much, it was really impactful to me the first time i watched it
Funny thing, I still haven't seen "Whiplash". Love this editors' conversation format. Thanks, Sven.
Awesome channel, love all the videos I have watched today. I am trying to understand the art of editing more as I have been pushed into shooting video at my new job at a Marketing agency. Anyways, thanks for this.
This video was pretty informative about storytelling and screenwriting. But in terms of editing, the one thing that stood out to me is that the cutting started getting faster as the music played on, showing how the intensity built up.
YES I WANT TO SEE MORE !!
i think you do a fantastic job on this channel. i love the in depth reverse engineering you do and i cant imagine the amount of hours you must put in to it. keep up the good work!! Question tho, do you think there are similar channels like yours that go further in depth about Sound Design and mixing for film. Ive been a music producer and engineer for years, but just recently started working in Film, and I love it. never thought id like it this much that i nerd out watching EDITING videos lol!
Please make more!! Ur a genius!!!
I thought it was very interesting. I am just starting to explore the world of editing and find that you have an uncanny way of describing and exemplifying story lines, directors intent and so many other ideas that, I would never have imagined. The coffee with editors just boosts that insight and technical knowledge even further. Thank you
Great discussion and great video.
I loved it please do more of Coffee with Editors, either with the same or different it doesnt really matters but the knowledge you share is worth watching. SO much to learn.Thankyou sven thankyou so much
Verry entertaining video, cool to see other editter's think about how to build a story.
The perfecto editing of this video isn't enough, youtube cut it in the middle, after an '"are you rushing or are you dragging" sentence, and gives me a commercial with a drummer immediately! Priceless :D
still enjoying the video. well done team!
I love that you use FCPX, thank you!
great stuff guys. I never knew Whiplash. Wow! what a bunch of editing cuts.
Loved this! Thanks!
More of this please!!! ❤
love the live simulation of your techniques here 10:40 lmao
One of my favourite movies ever. LOVE the mood and acting in this movie.
This is soo good! Dude hearing all these stories from people who are doing things so well is the best. Subscribed and addicted!
I liked this even better than your podcasts. Your addition of the Raging Bull footage was really wonderful. I'm definitely a visual person. I watched this vlog more than once. Now I need to watch Whiplash several times! Thanks.
I just discovered your channel. Wow. Amazing content, im a Digitals Arts Student and this really helped my to understand a lot of things. (sorry for my bad english)
Definitely amazing. WE NEED MORE
Yes, keep the coffee with editors episodes coming!
Awesome video man.
Goldfinger is paced and edited with a superb sense of rhythm.
love the horizontal flip during the boxing sequence. I saw that and thought, "Huh?"
Very informative. Would like more if these.
God, I love your videos! They help me with my editing for my vlogs so much. I just love how u break things down and then reveal things to think about that I would have overlooked, missed, or didn't think in the first place! Great video man!
Fascinating breakdown of Whiplash Most viewers would have missed these points
I was *NOT* into editing and videography before....but I started to get some vibe about shooting different stuff when I was thinking about what to do for my photography account's youtube content (well I gotta do something ) so it came to me, like I was fantasising about taking different shots and mixing it up in editing....but when I went out and actually took I could'nt do it because I'm not a vlog person I couldn't speak....and the video quality was soo bad...it's like a low end camera from the 2000s (it's poor btw) so I lost the motivation....but by seeing your videos I kinda starting to get those vibes back....thanks... And yes do the coffee thing...
Hello first scene where he tells whiplash and next cut to and Oscar goes to. Greatly done I felt that power of editing you did in this video. wow
Amazing I like it I think you should continue this.
Great video, thank you!!!
Thank you for excellent contribution.
awesome work.
I like how what they were talking about applied to the video. Tension building? AD break. Cutting? Have a cut.
This is interesting will like to see more of these
Fascinating stuff!
Great video!
11:51 when he says motivated the color grading and resizing changes for a brief moment
I noticed it as well. Probably these 4 extra frames were not covered by the Adjustment Layer.
This is so interesting , although i dont do editing, i love the movie and the idea of boxing and raise and release is so inspiring!
Awesome video!
Loved the format! Please keep on making these.
Yess, more please!
THIS WAS FANTASTIC!!!
Very good explanation! thanks =D
Awesome video¡¡ this is the kind of content I'm looking to improve myself into the editing world.
great stuff plus i like the team up great fit
The editing was amazing, but can we also show some love to the focus puller. The shot at 2:24 for example, probably the only people who noticed that was other focus pullers.
more please. Love coffee with editors. :)
My boy Eugene helped edit this video. We used to make videos on youtube back in the day and went to pursue it as a career. So proud of him!
