Als aliens de videobeelden van oude arcade-spellen als een oorlogsverklaring zien, vallen ze de aarde aan en gebruiken spellen als PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede en Space Invaders als voorbeelden voor hun aanvalstrategie. President Will Cooper (Kevin James) moet zijn jeugdvriend, videospelletjeskampioen uit de jaren ’80 Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler), bellen om een team van ouderwetse arcaders (Peter Dinklage en Josh Gad) aan te voeren om de aliens te verslaan en de planeet te redden.
