Season 2 Episode 24. In today's episode Jimbo takes the audience on the arduous journey of getting the Saturn S series clutch to fit the Kubota D722 diesel engine. This complex problem is solved with help from Jimbo's friends over at Central welding in Hutchinson Kansas. Tune in and see the rest of the story.
The walls in our new studio are bare, if you want to send swag please send it to:

As somebody who's struggled through engine swaps, here's some advice: Remember that when the clutch wears, the pressure place fingers move OUT towards the throwout bearing. When designing your adapter, be sure to make it like 1/8" to 1/4" thicker than the depth required to rest the throwout bearing against the pressure plate fingers with a new clutch. Otherwise, as soon as the clutch breaks in, you may find your clutch slipping just from the static pressure of the fingers against the fully retracted throwout bearing.
Good point! thanks

In the movies, every crazy old fart needs a cool old car. Jack Nicholson drove a spiffy yellow 1970 Dodge Challenger two-door in 'The Bucket List.' In 'Gran Torino,' the cranky pensioner played by Clint Eastwood not only owned a 1972 GT Sport, he also used to build cars like that at the Ford plant.
My dad was a very unconventional Asian American man. He was very much not quiet, not shy, not passive. If he had to fart, he'd do it in the library. He did not care. He was like, 'I don't know these people. I'm uncomfortable, and I need to let it go.'

Kubota uses German letters to enumerate the number of cylinders a particular engine has. I was told by a Duetz service manager this was because in the early days , Deutz had provided cast blocks / heads for Kubota E = Eines = One Z = Zwei = Two D = Drei = Three V = Vier = Four Also, the last # 2 in the D722 isn't displacement, it is a designation code for stroke ( in this case 68 mm ) so the " advertised approximate displacement " is 720 CC and 719 CC actual .

I'm a mechanic who mainly works with kubota engines only. I've been wanting to do a swap like this just for the sake of seeing how long it will last. In the last 10 years of me being working with these engines, none of them have ever failed given the proper maintenance. Only had to replace 2 due to user/owner error. Love this series :p keep at it
love this series and ROBOT CANTINA!!💖💖💖💖
I would love to marinize a Kubota diesel for my sailboat when my Yanmar 3GM30f dies. Its 26 years old, consumes some oil, but still runs well
Do you know what the difference in internal parts are between the DT722 and the D722? I have to rebuild mine and if I have to replace parts I might as well upgrade it to the turbo parts if there is a difference.
I’ve never seen a Dt722 only non-turbo, but once i had to swap a turbo from a dt1505 to a d1505. That did require some drilling for the oil return line which wasn’t in the non turbo block. Also the injectionpump needed some adjustment since it didn’t know it was now running a turbo. Internally i hardly can imagine any issues since these blocks are so durable. Anyway, of you also install an oil cooler and don’t have any pressure on your oil return line you should be in the clear. That d1505 is still running so its possible
In case you want to do a turbo upgrade that is. Cannot imagine why else you would upgrade the internals

Back in the early 80"s a designer put a 17HP 3 cylinder Kubota diesel in a car and got 128mpg (at 35mph I believe). An article was published about it in Mechanix Illustrated magazine. The frame and running gear was from a Triumph Spitfire car and the body was custom fiberglass over foam. Robert Q Riley Enterprises was the guy and he designed a lot of neat vehicles. Unfortunately he was a one-man business and he died a couple of years ago. You can still google his business and find a copy of his website with all the vehicles. I don't believe you can order plans anymore.
I saw somthing similar with a small industrial diesel engine in a locost kit car that had some extra bits to reduce air drag. 100+mpg is pretty neat and by no means is a miracle if you can accept driving a very lightweight and low power vehicle.
Mounting engines to transmission that were never intended to go together is the biggest black box of mystery in my mind but I love thinking about the combinations. It's good you found a machine shop that was willing to work on this. Seems like allot of machine shops aren't interested in doing anything cool like this; I've shopped around.
International Harvester built a truck in the late '60s that used a straight six gas tractor engine. 2400 rpm max, 35 to 40 miles per gallon because of some really tall final gearing. Pull hard all day long.
And the world cannot be discovered by a journey of miles, no matter how long, but only by a spiritual journey, a journey of one inch, very arduous and humbling and joyful, by which we arrive at the ground at our own feet, and learn to be at home.

my 14 year old grandson, he is interested in all things mechanical. He has enjoyed playing with the lawnmower and weed whacker and using the book as a guide. So far everything still runs, so I guess he's doing OK. I explained to him that not all engines are the same, but the principles still apply, so learn the basics and build from there. He is enjoying learning, and I am enjoying watching him build his confidence and library of knowledge. Nothing beats hands-on experience and instant gratification when you pull the cord and the engine fires up! I think it's the only Christmas gift he got that he is still using.
My 10 y/o son now has first hand experience of taking an old nonworking snowblower apart, making some repairs, and experiencing the thrill of blowing snow with a machine that he worked on with his own hands!
It made me understand how a small engine works and fixes/maintenance to these machines now are more intuitive
My grandkids are really interested about how cars work. I was trying to explain to them, but I was not doing a good job explaining
Good for learning the mechanical parts and how they fit and work together. Doesn’t really give more depth on difference between flat, straight 6, V8, V10, etc. so understanding things like “naturally aspirated” engines are somewhat curt in explanation. Essentially it’s car engineering 101 great for those with little or vague knowledge of automotive engineering.
I'm a recent mechanical engineering graduate and I (embarrassingly) was never that familiar with car engines. I perform all basic maintenance myself, but have never really done any in-depth repairs out of a combination of laziness and unfamiliarity with engines. Learning the basic 4-stroke engine cycle is one thing, but knowing how an engine and entire automobile is put together is a whole 'nother story.
The weights of the cars at the end was a wonderful add on! 😁

I'll just add a project from Jack McCornack I enjoyed following. He used a Kubota D-1105T and adapted it into a homebuilt Locost 7 (Lotus 7). Your video brought back memories and appreciation of how you both made creating a successful engine adapter look relatively easy. :) Bravo.
“I think that the power is the principle. The principle of moving forward, as though you have the confidence to move forward, eventually gives you confidence when you look back and see what you’ve done.”
The weight of 2 flywheels is going to make acceleration more lackluster than it should be. Too bad with all that work that you didn't decrease the rotating mass to closely resemble the Kabota flywheel alone. Some weight reduction could be accomplished via machining away material and/ or lightening holes or even reproducing one out of aluminium. I really like diesel and always believed they should be more utilized in this country to power small cars and pickups. Good luck !
Ya, I would have had a new flywheel made and utilized the starter ring of the Saturn. Made a new adapter plate that bolts to the engine block, replacing the stock one. Then utilize the Saturn starter if the Kubota didn't work. Live and learn.
The extra mass is going to help when starting out, especially on a hill.

One of my children was struggling to learn to read. I was talking to their teacher about how we were working on reading at home, and she said, in the kindest way, “Remember that your relationship with them is number one”. It was a really good reminder, and I think it can be applied to a lot of different parenting challenges.
My advice is to make it easy for your kids to be good. If you’re going somewhere where you will have to sit and wait, bring something quiet for them to do. Carry snacks wherever you go - hunger does not promote good behaviour
Encourage and support your kids because children are apt to live up to what you believe of them.”
“When your children are teenagers, it’s important to have a dog so that someone in the house is happy to see you.”
“My daughter told me I looked like a piñata and I take that as the highest compliment.”
“You can learn many things from children. How much patience you have, for instance.”
I'm glad you managed to use a proper clutch on this project! Hopefully it will help the overall efficiency of this drivetrain!

Anchorage to Valdez, Alaska The trip from Anchorage to Valdez will afford you majestic views past prehistoric glaciers and into incredibly peaked mountain ranges. This 300-mile journey will allow you to see the trans-Alaska pipeline. Closer to Valdez, you’ll come down in elevation to sea level and witness waterfalls of Keystone Canyon which spills into Prince William Sound.

“Science can amuse and fascinate us all, but it is engineering that changes the world.”
Nothing is impossible in this world. Firm determination, it is said, can move heaven and earth. Things appear far beyond one's power, because one cannot set his heart on any arduous project due to want of strong will.
If you're getting those bolts from McMaster they are probably Holo-Krome brand (mine were), and if that is the case they directly state on their website: *All HOLO-KROME products are made in the USA*
The engine that you pulled up 2:09 happens to be a Nitrostar G3.0 and that model is the 15105 variation and I know that because I collect and rebuild “vintage” HPI firestorm 10T nitro cars and I literally have that exact motor on my desk in front of me ready to be rebuilt.
