Music video for ‘Raido’. Directed by Tuukka Koski, Koski Syväri. English and original lyrics below:
Dark clouds drift within
The longing lures
pulls my mind
Will you carry me?
I want to go
Fair foal, I bid you
Sacks rich with gold of the fields
Fare swiftly on flying hoofs
Carry me, and I promise you
Ride out
Raido
The storm is stilled, the mind it flies
The drum of hoofs lay the beat
The heart, it follows, two are one
Sets me loose with speedy feet
Riding
Raido
Wild I rode and ran
Fair foal I spent
The ride is for the horse the worse
Pleasant and swift for the sitting
Raido
Raido
If I ride you
I ride more
As one is two,
where knots are tied
In bonds are bound
the whole world
If I bond you
I can journey
If you carry me
You carry more
As one is two
where chains are forged
In bonds are bound
the whole world
If you bond me
You can journey

Svarte skyar rir i meg
Lengten lokkar, hugen dreg
Ber du meg?
Vil i veg
Fager fole byr eg deg
Sekkar aud tå åkergull
Fara svint med flyg-før hov
Ber du meg, eg lovar deg
Ri ut
Raido
Stormen stilnar, hugen fer
Hovslagtromma takten slær
Hjartet fylgjer, tveim blir ein
Rir meg fri med raske bein
Ridande
Raido
Vilt eg rei og rende
Fager fole sprengde
Reiden er for drøsul verst
Sælt og snar for sitjande
Raido
Raido
Rir eg deg
Så rir eg meir
For ein er to
Der knutar knytast
I byrd er bunde
Heile verda
Om eg bind deg
Kan eg ferde
Ber du meg
Så ber du meir
Når to vert ein
Der lenkjer smiast
I byrd er bunde
Heile verda
Om du bind meg
Kan du ferde

  • A breakdown of thought on this video: First and foremost, Raido is a rune that means to travel, it represents adventure, overcoming a great challenge, and it also is a rune that means "riding" or "to ride." In the beginning Einar is tied to two trees, deep within a forest, and we have a repeating rhythm. We also see that his back is turned to a horse, who eagerly walks behind him, also bound to a tree. I take stagnation from these metaphors: An individual who is rooted in place, cannot move, or make progress, and has willingly turned his/her back, or has been forced to turn their back on opportunity. However, as we see with the video, Einar manages to free himself and is shown wandering in the forest with the horse as his companion. Note two things: A forest has always been a poetic symbol of the unknown and thus Einar is traveling a new path that is foreign to him, and thus he's vulnerable and uncertain; him not wearing shoes adds to the 'vulnerable' metaphor. Second, notice that Einar is NOT riding the horse in the beginning, but is riding it later in the music video. When he starts to ride the horse this represents him getting control of his journey, and then you even get to a point where he's riding the horse full gallop, representing a complete control and a complete freedom in his life. What starts as him wandering in a forests becomes him traveling over streams, past mighty stones covered in moss (a symbol for time), through fields, past lakes, over mountains, and so forth. In the end however, Einar and his companion reach the ocean and he releases him, setting him free and saying goodbye. As a final note, you also have fire as a metaphor in this music video. You see Einar and Lindy-Fay singing over the flames and its casting light, which I take to represent the power of the rune itself, and its deeper meaning. In the end of the music video, one of the final shots is Einar closing his eyes to the fire, and then it cuts to the horse walking away. I take this as a metaphor for an end to the journey; his own death, or perhaps simply overcoming the challenge that he faced. I can also reaffirm this from how the camera is on the surface of the water then, constantly shifting in and out of focus as the water passes in front of it. This represents a new journey about to begin; a new unknown to face. These were my thoughts after just watching the music video one time, so I'm sure I missed something. Awesome video though, Wardruna! Powerful as always.

    • +Nixxikom Thanks for these thoughts, very interesting. What first came to my mind after watching the video is an other meaning of these images. The story and also the lyrics can interpretate and symbolize a form of bonds between beings. Between humans and also between humans and nature and/or animals. A true form of love (or at least what love really should be) about two equal sides which are completing each other, not based on selfish needs and thoughts. The way Einar walks and rides with the horse, and especially how he lets the horse go at the final few seconds... Amazing.

    • The key word you mentioned is connection. Wardruna cleanses and strengthens our connection with our Source ( where we came from, God, Source energy, nature, or whatever you want to call it.) Most churches tell us we are separate from our Source until we die and we should do what they say or we will be rejected if we don't.This is total BS. When I go up into the high mountains and commune with nature my soul heals and my energy level rises to a very powerful state.I go trout fishing in my boat at over 8000 feet and I fish with the eagles. Love watching them swoop down and grab a trout out of the lake about 20 yards from me. I feel a much stronger connection with the energy that fuels the universe.Wardruna's songs make me feel the same thing. Go see them live if you can. I did !

    • @Peter from Ukraine With all of their raids a few vikings did try to settle down in these lands. And also woman got raped and ended up with childrens by this vikings. The vikings have always been in Scandinavia. Those that left were at raids and probably tried to settle down. Due to all the conflict settling down was not easy for them. But i can tell you that the majority of the vikings still was in Scandinavia. And they was until the end of the viking age. The Vikings were many not few so they spread alot of their origins to people around europe through their raids. I would say that the majority of people in Scandinavia has viking ancestors. While some outside can be lucky enough to have too. They have focused alot on Britain/England so they got alot of ancestors from there.

    • @@mathiasaaron6945 Have you been interested in the Vikings raids to the Eastern countries? For example, nowadays Russian city Novgorod was one of the Viking's citadels and then Vikings moved to Kyiv (now the capital of Ukraine) and created the next Viking's citadel in the East. After that Vikings tried to get the control over the provinces of the Eastern Roman Empire and vast territories around Volga river. Vikings were valued for their ability to bring order and justice (in the Medieval meaning). The legitimate kings in the Eastern Europe connected their families to Viking ancestors.

Oh, how naive I was thinking it would pass with time.. Every time I listen to music like this or watch a similar video, it only makes me realize how right I am. I thank gods (and the show Vikings) that I discovered this band, it was like a breath of fresh air I needed so much. Their songs take me to places, times and situations I can only dream of, connects my mind and soul with nature and something primal within my inner self. • Watched them live, OMG they are flawless live from the vocals, interments, and their presence. They got standing ovation throughout the show, the crowd in Toronto, Ontario were just awesome. Actor "Rolo" from Viking (Clive Standen) was in the audience in the middle row between the crowds with his family and no one noticed. We were at the front left row, and he passed by with his family to go backstage while intermission, and we didn't say anything but we were like OMG it's ROLO, in shock, and passed by again. The only disappointment was we weren't allowed to take photo's or videos as the security guards were in every corner watching anyone who does, but Clive was allowed to film and I believe he posted. I think its nice for fans to be allowed, specially waiting for a rare moment and memory being at a concert like this, but I understand and respect that. Still was breathtaking, bought all their albums at the show. So worth it.

  • We have Norse blood in our family, I am a huge fan of Vikings and somehow I only discovered Wardruna today. Today... of all days... when we are learning that we will be losing our dear Mom very soon. This music makes me feel courage but it also makes me cry. I feel guilty about not being a stronger “Viking” in the face of losing my other parent. We already lost our Dad in 2003 and once Mom is gone we may be adrift in our family war boat, directionless and eyes so full of tears we will not see well enough to navigate... but... maybe if I just keep listening to this music I will grow an indestructible beard that will double as a compass and guide us through the impending storms.

  • This is my favorite Wardruna song. Rune Raido is one of the most powerful runes, and its feeling cannot be better expressed by any other song. The combination of Einar Selvik's haunting vocals and the use of traditional Nordic instruments creates a mesmerizing and spiritual experience that transports the listener to ancient times. The lyrics, inspired by Norse mythology, add depth and meaning to the already powerful music. The haunting vocals and the intense percussion in this song perfectly capture the essence of Rune Raido, which symbolizes journey, movement, and change. Listening to this song is a transformative experience that transports me to another realm. It's amazing how music can convey so much emotion and meaning, and Wardruna does an incredible job of connecting with their audience through their music. I always feel a sense of clarity and purpose after listening to this song, as if I've gained a new perspective on life. The use of traditional Nordic instruments and chanting in Wardruna's music adds to the authenticity of their sound, making it feel like a spiritual experience. It's no wonder that their music has gained a cult following among fans of Viking and pagan culture. Their music is not only enjoyable to listen to, but it also serves as a gateway to learning more about ancient Nordic culture and beliefs.

  • This is what I call music. Original, organic and dynamic soundscapes and lyrics with a meaning. Not some shitty bands like Amaranthe with overcompressed, plastic commercial bullshit that resembles more computer generated noise than any instruments. That's what the mainstream labels are marketing in music industry and they're the Justin Bieber or Katy Perry of metal music. Wardruna isn't metal, but Kvitrafn has black metal history and knows what is the difference music with soul and music without it. This stuff has the soul and emotion and draws you into another world. That's the meaning of music: to create visions through soundscapes. Wardruna always nails it.
