The Black Phone - Official Trailer
In Theaters June 24
www.theblackphonemovie.com/
The phone is dead. And it’s ringing.
Director Scott Derrickson returns to his terror roots and partners again with the foremost brand in the genre, Blumhouse, with a new horror thriller.
Finney Shaw, a shy but clever 13-year-old boy, is abducted by a sadistic killer and trapped in a soundproof basement where screaming is of little use. When a disconnected phone on the wall begins to ring, Finney discovers that he can hear the voices of the killer’s previous victims. And they are dead set on making sure that what happened to them doesn’t happen to Finney.
Starring four-time Oscar® nominee Ethan Hawke in the most terrifying role of his career and introducing Mason Thames in his first ever film role, The Black Phone is produced, directed, and co-written by Scott Derrickson, the writer-director of Sinister, The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Marvel’s Doctor Strange.
The film’s screenplay is by Derrickson & C. Robert Cargill (Doctor Strange, Sinister franchise), based on the award-winning short story by Joe Hill from his New York Times bestseller 20th Century Ghosts. The film is produced by Derrickson & Cargill’s Crooked Highway and presented by Universal and Blumhouse. Jason Blum, Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill are producers on the film, which is executive produced by Ryan Turek and Christopher H. Warner.

  • One of the best horror-thriller with an emotional touch. This movie is quite unique cuz it's horror-thriller where there are both a serial killer and ghosts. I like how the story isn't just about making people scared or feeling goosebumps but it also has character development and a family story which you can relate to. There are several touching moments which makes the movie stand out from the rest of this genre. Also love the performances by both the siblings actors. I swear once you get to the part where the boy is kidnapped, you'll be hooked to your seat.

  • ok so I have some theory about Finn's mother. so we know how Gwen has those dreams and how it is shown that her mother experienced the same thing, and it's likely it was passed on to her. well I seen another theory that it also sort of passed on to Finn, and that's what allowed him to talk to the other victims, because he asked Billy did the phone ring for any of them, and he said that it rang, but none of them heard it, implying that the ghost kids tried to save the others, but they weren't able to communicate with the dead, unlike Finn. billy also mentions that the grabber himself hears it too, but pretends not to, so if this theory is correct, how can the grabber hear it? well (and this is just a theory) if you look at Gwen's dreams and Finn ability to communicate with the dead, they all relate back to the grabber. Gwen has dreams about the grabbers victims, and Finn can talk to them, so there must be some connection. and also, the grabbers really name is Albert Shaw, and in the books, Finn's full name is Finn Shaw, not Finn Blake. maybe Blake is his fathers name, and his mother's is Shaw, meaning that she is related to the grabber, most likely a sister, because the it's never mentioned in the movie (I haven't actually read the book yet lol) that he has any other family other than Max, but he still proably does. so if Finn's mother is the grabbers sister, and she has the dreams, and the grabber can hear the phone, it's probably either started with them or was passed down to them. max may be able to do something too, but it might be somewhat traumatising so he dulls it with drugs, kinda like Klaus from the umbrella academy. and to be honest all of them probably have some trauma, proably to do with whoever raised them. like you don't just raise kids and one grows up to be a drug addict, one grows up to be a killer and also (if my theory is right) one kills themselves. it's also mentioned that the grabber has lived in his house since he was a kid, and is familiar with the phone and how it doesn't work, ok it's really late I'm just gonna finish this tomorrow sorry for any spelling mistakes

    • I just found out Joe Hill (the author) is Stephen King's SON. While i was watching the movie 15 minutes ago, i noticed a lot of similarities with king's style. Psychic kids with powers passed down from a parent that passed away, villain that is also supernatural making both the protagonist and antagonist related as in "narratively" not biological. As i see the how much time was remaining in the movie, i was wondering if there would be a cliff hanger at the end to make room for a sequel and extended universe because there's no way the movie would've ended without explaining the mother + why there's even supernatural stuff happening in that world. Then there's that scene when she's on her yellow raincoat, in the rain, alone, and I'm like "oh she's about to encounter either the grabber or the ghost kids, just like Georgy in ITChapter 1... And she did. So predictable 🥹

I was genuinely so happy when both Fin and Gwen made smart decisions instead if making dumb ones that could've gotten them killed. Spoilers ahead, don't read if you somehow haven't watched it yet. Everything Fin did was just smart in general but I really gotta applaud Gwen because when she found the house, she got back up and rushed home to call the police. In a different horror movie, she would've barged in by herself. So props to The Black Phone!

  • A suspense thriller . I cried ,laughed, and routed for the kids. Movie was great. I was on the edge of my seat and the last telephone entire scene ran chills through my body. The villain was creepy / scary/ and played his role intensely with agonizing sadistic terror. Momentarily I felt I couldn’t take the movie because some times it felt slow but picked right back up. A roller coaster ride. Every time the phone rang my chest was beating . Every time something didn’t work for Finney my palms sweat and I’d feel like I was there in the basement with him. All the kids were convincing and did some good acting. The end is satisfying to watch and I would have like to see the cops be less of idiots. The cops suspicion through out was really low of the sadistic actor brother. This movie had me too much on the edge , very wild and my emotions were on a roller coaster ride .

But studios don't trust their material anymore. They're afraid too little will not garner interest in their multimillion dollar movie. That's why I don't watch trailers for movies much. I imagine he was abused by his father in the same basement and his name was Johnny because he called Finny "Johnny" when he first put Finny in the basement. The young actors in this brilliant film were the standouts. Mason Thames who plays Finney reminds of of a combination of a young Tom Holland, a young Heath Ledger and a young River Phoenix. Thames has the good looks, stoic charm and acting skills that will take him places in the future. Madeleine Mcgraw who plays Gwen reminds me of a young Angelina Jolie with her combination of grace, strength and dramatic acting skills that will take her places in the future. I wish them both much happiness and success.

  • english: my favorite movie. it immerses you in the story in an incredible way, it's not a horror, but a suspense, it leaves you curious until the end and it has some scares, but nothing too much. Ethan's performance (grabber) is impeccable, and Mason Thames (finney) has become my idol, this boy has a lot of potential for his age. the recording is great, they record everything from every possible angle, which makes the film even better. what i'm seeing is a lot of people saying that the trailer showed the whole movie, i saw it in the cinema and, believe me, it doesn't. so watch it before you judge, you won't regret it. portuguese: meu filme favorito. ele te imerge no conto de uma forma incrivel, não é um terror, e sim um suspense, ele te deixa curioso pro fim e tem sim alguns sustos, mas nada demais. a atuação do Ethan (grabber) é impecável, e o Mason Thames (finney) se tornou meu idolo, esse garoto tem muito potencial pra sua idade. a gravação é otima, eles gravam tudo em todos os angulos possiveis, o que deixa o filme ainda melhor. o que eu estou vendo são muitas pessoas dizendo que o trailer mostrou o filme todo, eu vi ele no cinema e, acreditem, não mostra. então assistam ele antes de julgarem, não vão se arrepender.

  • Too many trailers are setup like highlights of a film rather than an independent project entirely where the objective is less about impressing and more about peaking an audience's curiosity. I know that sounds obvious, right, but this whole trailer should've ended at the 1:38 mark, right after the boy picks up the phone and says "Hello?". At that point, we already know the phone isn't plugged in. We know what's happening is at least partly surreal or imagined, so why go all the way and show a whole group of ghost kids complete with a training montage? Now anyone who's seen this trailer will basically go into the film having already watched the entire storyboard in HD.

    • Yeah, I hate trailers like this. It's like the person who cut it has no idea how to actually sell the Movie without showing us every beat, I don't know if it's to draw an audience in or if it's a request from the production company but far to many Film Trailers do this now and it kinda sucks.

You find yourself trying to figure out how to escape with the character as if you were with them yourself. If you are a fan of those old escape room computer games on the early days of the web, (when newgrounds, mofunzone, and addicting games was the best) you’d probably enjoy this.

  • It's ironic that Hawke says, "Wanna see a magic trick?" because that's the problem with 3-minute trailers. Audiences want to know just enough to pique their curiosity, just like wanting to see a magician. Instead, a 3-minute trailer shows us the magician, shows us the trick, and explains to us how they performed the trick.
