➳How much exercise does an #AustralianShepherd need seems to be the question of all questions. So I am here to talk about that and compare the two days to each other. Day 1 we have 0 hours of exercise. Just some tricks for treats and nothing else on this rainy day. Day 2 we have 3 hours of exercise and you can see the difference for yourself.

So I am curious, what is your exercise routine with your pup? How many hours? What do you do?
Im an early riser so i take my dog on a walk early in the morning and let her out till she is done with the usual duties because of the heat recently and im hoping to take her for late night walks
I have a 6 month old female Aussie named Kassie. Early in the morning she comes with me in my truck. I walk her 2 or 3 times before we get home around 11. Another walk in the afternoon with some ball throwing. (Raw! 😊) dinner around 6:15. Then back to the ballpark around 8pm for more ball throwing and Frisbee, and if her friend Waldo is there, then it is puppy wrassling for 20 minutes. Bedtime around 9:30.
I have an almost 1 yr old Aussie and around 7:00 PM (To make sure he doesn’t burn his paw’s) I take him on a walk, these walks are about 1 hour and as he gets older he will get more exercise and longer walks.
My 11 month old Wiggle butt, has a chuck it and we play ball at the dog park an hour in the morning and in the afternoon. Ball any time anywhere this is my life now. Curious what you use for the shedding, I tried the FURminator he hated it. I just use a undercoat rake, he’s still young so the shedding has just begun.
We do about 1 to 4 hours a day with hikes, training, and fetch!
2 hours on average and in the weekend we have at least one "adventure". he is now 10 months so he is still crazyyyyyy but that's what we love about the breed.
love it!
My Aussie shepherd ( 7 years old) has 1-2 hours of exercise most days. We also skip a day in extreme weather. He’s very adaptable. We either walk through the woods and countryside or we join a group at the park and he does ball retrieval .. it’s his favourite thing and he can keep going a very very long time.
I have a 4 year old mini Aussie. Her energy level varies. She can be very content laying with me on the sofa getting lots of love or next to my desk while I am working. She is an active chewer though and will keep herself busy without me. Has not destroyed anything not a toy in a long time which I am grateful for. She loves to go for walks when it is cooler. Unfortunately, We live in the south and like right now it is 96*F with a feel like of 108...too hot to be walking for me even must less her... In the cooler months, she can go and go. She will crash though. I would say on average an hour is good for her with a caveat of mental stimulation on top of that.
Start every day with an early 40 minute brisk walk, 2.5 miles. It's pretty hot right now but my husband or I usually take the mini Aussie out for 15 minutes at a time to play Frisbee or chase squirrels 3 or 4 times a day. She also plays ball while she eats and plays with her many other toys until they're all over the house. I'd say an even, solid 2.5 hours of exercise is what Leda gets now at 3 years, 5 months old.
I just got an aussie puppy. she is 16 weeks and I have found that after playing outside if she still has energy, I do mat and obedience training. She loves it and the she chills out.
I've been binge watching all of your videos. Thank you so much for posting all these wonderful videos. Even though I miss my Piper (she passed away this past May 2022), I feel like you and Frankie helps me heal each and every day. Btw, Frankie's demeanor is so much like my Piper's...even his facial expressions. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Sagan (red merle Aussie, standard size) was 14 so we ran around and played inside the house, chase the humans ! And he came alive every night around 8, mugging for pets, bringing toys, etc.... Little Doppler (another red merle, standard) was a puppy so everyone pitched in and walked him, and played with him....now, the latest pup is a 7 month old rescue corgi husky mix named Lottie....we run her in the backyard (tennis ball), and have her chase me, a few times a day....and briskly walk 2 miles everynight...she'll bark around 8 if we have not gone for our walk...we are still trying to learn how to walk together, I would like to go running, but not with a circling, herding dog.... I'd love to have a recall like Frankie does....love it how he perks up when he hears FRISBEE.... I got, one and she loves it, but we need to do it outside...
I live out in the middle of nowhere with a steer and a couple of horses he is allowed to free roam whenever he wants he goes everywhere he wants to and he always comes back it's kind of the best life a dog could have especially for the type of dog I have which is a mini Aussie one of the best actually the best country cow dog you can get
I would do about 1-3 hours 4 depending in how much time I have like on the weekend!
I have a 6 month old mini Aussie. When one of either me or my gf are home for the day he gets about 2-3 hours of exercise a day. When we are both at work he goes to daycare, so he exercises almost all day. It’s kept him happy and makes him a good listener
So funny- I was watching Frankie before I got my Henry … and now I am seeing all the similarities between the two. So glad I got my little guy. Keep the videos rolling. We love it!
Love that!
We get at least 3 hours of exercise a day! An hour in the morning, afternoon, and evening. I find it helps tire my little pup out... for now!
Perfect timing i have been rewatching videos all day it makes me smile so much
well i hope this one keeps ya settled until sunday haha thanks for the support
It definently will 😁
My exercise routine for him is... interesting. I'm disabled so I can't walk and run him like I'd like to, (and he'd like to) but my family tries to get him out for walkies. Once he's more trained and behaves a little better, he'll be going everywhere with me. It's been way too hot recently (Virginia in August) for much outside stuff, but he lOVES tennis balls and chasing them and catching them with his super nerf shooter. When the lake opens up again, he absolutely loves to swim and chase bubbles in the water. Also kayaking! I looks like George Washington crossing the Delaware. I can't wait for the summer to ease up (because it's harder on me. I can exercise better in cooler weather myself). But my (standard/full size) boi is only turning 9 mo this month and it's all a working progress.
It sounds like you are doing an amazing job and you are going to have a very happy pup!
I have a 1yr old St Bernard/Aussie and honestly, it's either lowkey walk days (45 minutes tops) or like 3-4 hour hike days ... no in between lol
That look at 7! I know that look w mine. His gremlin mode
My 1 year old Aussie gets about 2 hours of exercise on average with daily walks and play time. Just like you, everyday is an adventure for us since I work from home. He loves to run, hike, swim and his favorite frisbee! On the weekends we’re usually out most of the day exploring a new place or hiking, he’s become the best backpacking buddy 🏕🐾
I give my 10 month golden retriever about 2 hours of exercise a day :)
My mini aussie usually get about 2 hours of exercise every day. Some days less, some more. Sometimes more calm like a sniffing walk, sometimes more energetic like playing frisbee, football or going bikejoring!
Thanks for sharing!
8 month mini/large toy aussie, she's not a high energy dog but she's always thinking and needs sufficient physical exercise to calm her down plus a lot of social and mental stimulation. We do about 1-2 hours of exercise, exploration, and errands in the morning (she's up at 6:30am), training and play time throughout the day, a short midday or early afternoon walk if it's not sweltering hot here in California, and then a longer evening walk and play time before calling it at night between 10-11pm. All in, she gets a 2-3 hours of exercise, training, play, and intentional socialization on a daily basis. Weekends usually involve long multi-hour hikes, road trips, new environments and playdates. Fortunately, she has an off switch and will keep herself occupied during the day if she doesn't have a lot going on.
I am obsessed with Frankie! Super cute!
For our mini aussie we usually do anywhere between 1-3 hours daily. Weekends are always special though and usually ends up being closer to 3-4.
We are living identical lives
great to see you and frankie i cant say it enough he is such a great looking dog always love your post
Thanks so much
Another awesome video!! Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks! Will do!
My mini Aussie is still a puppy (almost 3 months!), so I'm still waiting to see how his exercise routine takes shape eventually. But right now, he does really well with three or four play sessions in our backyard a day (anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes each). And it can depend on the day - sometimes that's enough and he's tuckered out, and sometimes he wants to keep playing even more than that. Can't wait to start taking him to parks and trails!
You're doing it perfectly!
i have a malinois (high energy as well XD) and it's about 2h to 2.5h of exercice every day ( he's still a puppy so i try to not do too much) i try to impose a 'break' day if we did a lot of exercice the day before and that seems to work well. i find people don't train there dogs to have an off day and that's what lead to problems. a few weeks ago i go sick and we had 3 off days in a row he went through lots of chews but he let me rest and for a 5 month old puppy that's pretty great!
Awesome video.... you are so right...spend time with your 🐕..both human and dog will adapt!
Yes they do
I have a show aussie from iceland- so I just really might have a different temperament with my dog- but I focus on developing an "off" switch in all of my dogs. I think it's important esp in front of kids, other dogs, and people that are just scared of dogs. But normally he gets about 30 minutes of physical exercise and a lot of mental stimulation. puzzle bowls, task training, frozen kongs, ect. It bothers me when people gatekeep this dog by saying "Oh they are off the wall." They aren't. They are an active dog, for a responsible owner.
My Aussie is also from a show line, we were told they tend to have less energy, which I've found to be not true haha. He also gets about 30 mins to 1 hour every morning and then kongs, puzzles and other stuff throughout the day. Any tips for developing an off switch properly?
@@lauf4888 I practice by going to restaurants and just sitting. lol. "Sit on the dog" helps me a lot. you just sit on the leash. But basic obedience has also helped due to impulse control.
I take my 7-month-old Aussie to the dog park every morning and evening where he runs and plays with his buddies for 30-60 minutes. On weekends we might go on a hike or an expedition. we're also doing obedience class and this 1 hour/week deflates him completely. Lol! I noticed he's needing more exercise. We'll see if things change once he gets snipped in 2 weeks. Love your videos.
I have a 4 month old aussie so its pretty hell right now 😂😂 just trying to train him and go twice a Day on walks with him... Combined maybe 1 to 2 hours of walks everyday and also i need to mention the snuggles 😂 he totally enjoys that 😂
Three to four hours every day, when I don't feel good, we can tune that down and otherwise up, if we are having a great time. In the last two years, I have walked over 8 miles every day and I don't have to do any sports without him lol
Frankies so cute
Walks, out and in-house fetch, training 3 days minimum a week, training in stores, visits his GSD cousin 3-4 times a week. Some days we don’t do anything since I’m running around. One max 2 days a week we don’t do anything but I let him run outside like crazy on these days. My doggo is just fine. I love him so much.
hold on, you visit other dogs 4 times a day?
@@FrankieToTheMoon lolllllll!!!’ Ahahahha i meant a week. 😂😂😂
My 2 year old Aussie has a regular routine that he sticks to. When I am at work my husband walks with him at least 3 times (9:30am, 1pm, and 4:30pm), then we both take him out after dinner. On weekends or when I am on holiday the afternoon walk has to be done by me.... and then usually it is a long long walk 1-2 hours. He sometimes lets us skip the 4:30 walk but never the evening walk. (We also own a bar so there is a late late walk at 1am on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights). He seems to intuitively know what day it is and what the routine will be - he gets very vocal if we change it.
I have an 11 month old Shepherd/collie type and he usually gets at least 2 hours a day plus training. Our morning is usually 45 minutes or so, I try to do an hour at least, of playing and running. During the day, I try to give him a couple of short sessions. Then after work another hour at least of harder playtime, and in the evening typically a longer training session! Though it totally does vary, if we have been on a roll and doing lots of activities every day, it's typically easy for him to "take a day off".
I giggle whenever you mention a video coming up(water fountain) and it already came out, LOL!
ahah yeah our videos were a little out of order for a little bit, but we are back now!
@@FrankieToTheMoon Doesn't matter to me! Frankie keeps me going. I grew up with an aussie. I got into a bad car accident when I was 18(31 now) and gained over 200lbs. Broke my back and had to relearn how to walk, leaving my dad to take over exersizing my Panda. She passed away at 16 years old. To this day I resent the injury, because it prevented me from going on adventures with my aussie and doing right by her at the end of her life activity wise. I am scheduled for bariatric surgery at the end of september and when I reach my weightloss goal, I want to adopt an aussie puppy. The breed is near and dear to my heart. I must do right by my body and be sure I am in the right standing before taking on such an amazing breed again. Frankie reminds me everyday that this mission to better health is worth it in the end to have a bond an aussie offers. Hold him extra tight for me today and give extra kisses. Thank you.
4 hrs is about right….1 is the absolute minimum that my Aussie gets….mostly hiking/going for walks, sometimes bike rides, following me along when I ride my horse
About an hour or 2 for my pup . She needs tons of naps tho my mini American shepherd recently got sick with a little upper respiratory issue and a belly ache from that food Nulo. Switching back to her food ASAP. We got 2 pups and I’m trying to teach her to be separate from her sister and that she needs to play and have energy without her sister
Hi we give Chipper our charcoal labrador around 2 till 3 hours a day of walkingor playing at the dog park, and he loves brain games, so hiding treats or doing puzzels. He now is 20 months old and love him to peacies 🥰
My Aussie has a sweet spot of 1 hour hard out door exercise when it’s under 100 out (Phoenix, AZ) and then we do play quite a bit inside in addition to that. When it’s cooler out or we are traveling with him to cooler places 3 good hours of out door exercise seems perfect.
I bought Frankie this pool! We just posted it on our stories :) maybe that will help?
I live in South Florida so the summers are bad. I walk my 2 1/2 year old Aussie at 6am. During summer, only 1 mile, cooler weather 2 miles. Playing fetch and a sort of hide n seek in the yard in short time spurts during summer. Longer in cooler weather. I have to get more training time in. He's protective of me & the house. And at times, it was justified. I need to work on that. He's a bit rebellious at times.
My Aussie mix does the same thing with poles and tree trunks. He goes the wrong way and gets stuck and it takes him forever to figure out how to go around them. He thinks the leash is trying to strangle him!
Honestly frankie is very good at it.. this is probably the first time where he didnt understand hah
Queen Maya was alive I walked through two hours a day plus playing with the Frisbee and ball in the backyard periodically Miss My Dawg
I have a 6 month old aussie! I know what you mean about the wardrobe change after a bath, i've given up and change into swimsuits when i give my pup a bath haha!! Also my aussie does that too, she rubs on every surface available after a bath, even when i've blown-dried her completely dry. I don't think they're itchy! I read that they're trying to get their scent back!
Yeah i think it is a little of both haha
i am about to get an aussie, i mean like we alr got her, but she is still breast feeding. ive been binging all of your videos and they helped me a lot. I am still in school, and where i live, it starts right ass were getting our dog. my dad works from home, but he doesnt want to be 'the only one taking care of the dog' i get home at around one from school. do you have any tips?
I have a 6 month old mini aussie - about 1 to 2 hr of exercise a day. But the older she gets (with more training), the more I think I'll be able to exercise her. For example, I have not introduced frisbee play.
Once you introduce fisbee… you can’t go back
My mini Aussie usually gets about an hour every day with me. But she goes to daycare several days per week and she gets to play hard with pups. I don’t even know…
My Aussie mix loves a run, but also equally loves a lazy lounge around (she's on my bed snoring away as I write this). I make sure to take her once a week to go see her doggie best friend. Not sure if it's available in Canada, but the Furminator shampoo and conditioner is AMAZING for reducing the shedding. The conditioner also helps with the itch and helps release the undercoat. It smells so good and it's made of natural ingredients.
Teaching her high five and she is getting it down fast XD
ahha yeah they learn that in like 5 minutes ahha
I have an Aussie and we try 2 hours a day. He’s a year old (in a week) and he does well with that much exercise :)
Well that is what we are trying next! We will see if it works
@@FrankieToTheMoon he’ll do great I’m sure!
I'm looking to get a mini Aussie in the coming year from a breeder and have been doing a fair bit of research. Hard to know which to select. Anyone have any suggestions for the north east or east coast generally (USA)?
I have a 1 year old Aussie and we give him 2-3 hours of exercise a day but he’s still crazy
Yeah that is very similar to what i give frankie. some days it is enough, some days it isnt haha
I have a Belgian Malinois, 6 months, we do 3 training/exercise sessions a day. I work an office job, so it's quite challenging, but definitely doable! We average 1:30-2hrs a day, including some obedience work plus fetch, frisbee and walks!
In a future video, could you talk about how to keep your dog cool during the hot summers? I know he goes into water when he can but do you carry water to pour on him or just limit his time outdoors?
Swimming swimming swimming!!!
question: how often do you give Franks a bath? Or is it random like whenever he gets really dirty and muddy? Right before I got my Aussie I looked it up how often to bathe them and it said once every 3 or 4 months for their skin. And I think that’s difficult because he gets dirty ALL THE TIME… so just wondering if that’s actually something that I should listen to… 😂😂 love you guyssss ❤️ 12:28 my favorite!!! (About 3 hours on average for my aussie)
My mini Aussie dont shed at all! His name Is Mac! We call him macaroni or macatone lol.Anyways ♥ your channel keep It Up!
this is ....unheard of haha unless mac is a puppy
Olive is 5 months and pretty laid back for an Aussie but Do Not Turn Your Back!!
Hey, Joey. I have a question. So I recently got an Aussie, and whenever she really wants to play or is really hyper, she likes to play bite. Now obviously, she isn't biting with her full potential, but it still can hurt sometimes, and I want to stop this before she gets a lot older. She is only 3 months as of now. Any advice on how to go on about this? I have tried ignoring her and not playing with her for a bit. I have tried yelping or I guess expressing my pain, but it doesn't stop her.
Whenever frankie nips me a little too hard while playing, I immediately stop playing and going into ouch mode. I make a big scene, and i turn away from him. He immediately feels sorry and next time he is a lot more gentle
I have a 7 month old Border Aussie and MAN put those two breeds together and it’s just a energizer bunny! Something I noticed is when I take him to the park he LOVES getting into the puddles. I know we shouldn’t bathe them every day.. how do I make sure I’m not ruining his coat?
ahahha this was the funniest thing to read! and no i wouldn't bathe them everyday but you could rinse them off!
Abigail, try a corgi and husky, same thing....even with little legs, she wants to go, go , go, go...
Might have missed it if you mentioned in another video, but is frankie neutered? Wondering if you could make a video about his recovery if he did have the procedure
Frankie is neutered and he had the surgery at like 1 year 3 months! He recovered very very well
what do u work with? since aussies can't be home alone for long time:)
I’m self employed but Frankie can be left alone for 8 hours so I’m quite lucky
1-2 hours since he is 10 mothns old and he is a lazy cauch potato too\
I throw a branch into the water for like 2 hours
haha whatever works
You are an awesome Aussie owner! I have a 4 yr old blue tri.
Very cool!
How tall is he??? 😍😭
20 inches
My 4 month old Aussie gets a walk at 5am, then about an hour and a half at the park at 5pm with plenty of running, tug of war, and frisbee. he also gets like 2 to 3 play sessions in between.
I cringe every time I see you walk down the hardwood stairs in your socks. I fell down an entire flight of stairs when I slipped in socks on the hardwood at the top. Luckily I was ok, but never did those stairs again in just socks.
