  • Laurie helped to bring out the child hidden within Jo. Laurie was someone she could have moments of fun with, without having to think about the difficulties of her life. Laurie added the fun like her sisters did. However, Jo by nature was serious, ambitious, wanting to do something in life and Laurie could never be that man who would motivate her or take interest in her writing. He could never encourage her. Yes, of course, he could love her but Jo didn't need the love at the time Laurie proposed to her, she already had love from her sisters and that for her was enough. The only reason Jo wrote that letter to Laurie at the end and wanted him back in her life is because at that specific point in her life, she was truly lonely - she lost a sister (Beth), she soon realised how her other sisters (Meg and Amy) were happy with life but she wasn't. Laurie could perhaps bring that happiness back. But no she was wrong, true happiness lied in her writing, in the time she spent by herself, I'd say that's when Jo really discovered herself and therefore wrote the amazing book she did!

  • I'm in love with this scene. I just spent the last 20 minutes watching and rewatching. It's so refreshingly natural. They talk over each other, the intense ramping up of movement at the beginning and winding down to the stillness at the end, Laurie's small desperate movement to kiss her at 1:41 and her pulling away, the wordless changes in expression when the other person makes significant argument points. And the editing is flawless. The editors give *significantly* more screentime to Laurie and his reactions than Jo's, amplifying the heartbreak of the situation and allowing Chalamet's stellar performance to truly shine. It feels real, and I think that why I keep returning to this clip. I've yet to see the movie, but this scene has me sold.

    @sandrarivera1262@sandrarivera1262 Жыл бұрын
    • Actually, Laurie wanted Jo to go with him to Europe. They are both free spirits and the explanation as to why they supposedly wouldn’t work as a couple is exactly their similar personalities. Honestly, Alcott just didn't want them together and invented this bullshit.

      @luisabergami4120@luisabergami41204 ай бұрын
    • @@luisabergami4120Laurie was a free spirit, but not as much as Jo. It was clear in his time with Amy that he was doing just fine staying in Europe, enjoying his life without doing a "risk" thing like Jo was doing with her writing: he wanted to settle down, even if he would come back to move one day; Jo didn't want to settle down and kept moving everyday of her live, even in her worse ones. Their relationship would never work out because, as much as they were happy and living the best in their childhood, it was just childhood. Jo herself admitted that, Laurie was just to blind with his love and admiration to notice that it was already a lost case. As children, they could continue to play and have fun as such, but they would not be able to evolve together as adults. It's clear to see this in that one scene where Laurie got drunk, let Amy and her "fiance" wait for hours, and tried to play with her: “Oh, save me saint Amy!”. If it was Jo, there were two options, she would laugh and not reproach Laurie for his attitude, or she would explode and make the situation worse. Amy, however, was being calm with him: not laughing, not smiling, only staring and asking if he was proud of that humiliation. Jo and Laurie would stay the same and with this they would end up in a miserable marriage because it doesn't work like this, you need to change in order of the other; something that happened with Laurie while with Amy. Amy brought the best of him, that's why they work. Jo wouldn't change herself for Laurie, she wouldn't settle down with Laurie. Jo was a free spirit and I doubt that anyone could ever change that. (I apologize for such a long text, I just really like to talk about them 😅)

      @2h1n39@2h1n394 ай бұрын
    • @@2h1n39 If you’re talking about the movie, perhaps. But in the books, Jo does settle down with someone else. Amy’s scolding towards Laurie in the gardens - in the books - actually made Laurie leave her, and he was only capable of admitting she was right after some time, months even. I’m one to say Laurie was even more of a free spirit than Jo! Since his first apparition in the books, he says his dream is to go to Italy and listen to music and live life his way, it’s Jo who convinces him that he should stay because he’s all his grandfather has. He finishes college because of her. She’s a good influence on him. At the end of the first book they are sitting together, she’s tucked under her chin and they watch the March’s home. It’s a contrast to the second in which she doesn't want him to touch her. They wouldn’t work because Jo never loved him like that, but Laurie did stay with Amy because he couldn’t have Jo. Before he asks to marry Amy he sends a letter to Jo asking if her feelings have changed. He compares himself to Mozart who couldn’t have one sister and married the other. Jo marrying Bhaer and Laurie marrying Amy is just the way the book sets an example that we should settle. She contemplates stopping to write, opens a boy’s school, and spends her days looking after children. He changes entirely and enters high society. They end the way their social roles say they were meant to. (I do love to rant about Little Women as well)

      @luisabergami4120@luisabergami41204 ай бұрын
    • @@luisabergami4120 Hi, again! :D Well, I haven't read the book yet, however I can't really believe the idea of Laurie marrying Amy just because he couldn't have Jo; he was always surrounded by other women's, he could have had any of them if so wanted; but he chose Amy. By free spirit, I meant that Jo was more independent and freewill than Laurie. She wanted freedom from the oppression of a female writer, of the oppression that society put her under for being a woman - despite her "following" the desire of being a caretaker as a teacher. Laurie wanted to explore the world, it's true, but he also wanted to have someone by his side and be together with a special one. I think him and Amy worked perfectly. Jo was perfect for him when they were both children, however, as adults, they couldn't work out. They have changed a lot in adulthood and I doubt that they could have the same chemistry - I'm talking more at the beginning when their personalities were a bit... difficult: Laurie being always drunk and Jo so stressed that her temper would be in the way most of the time. Well, it's just my opinion without reading the book yet. Please forgive me for sounding persuasive or inconsistent, I didn't have the intention while writing this.

His whole life, he had loved Jo. *always* And what hurt the most about that is that she loved him too. She said it. But she wouldn't be a wife. She said she wouldn't be one to anybody, and her love for him didn't matter. So he went to Amy. And he did love her. But she was his second choice. And Amy knew that. • This scene alone wins it for me. It always annoyed me how in the other versions the proposal scene is always so peaceful, with Jo just calmly trying to reason with Teddy. In this one they let them quarrel and you can truly tell how desperate he is to be with her and how desperately she is trying to show him that she doesn’t want that. They’re actually fighting and I love that for some reason lol

    • I absolutely agree! Although I have loved the other version the direction of the whole movie was superb for even first-time watchers in understanding the end and how each character revealed themselves, worthy of how they ended up with. This scene, was beautifully and more captivatingly portrayed than other versions, the fighting, the desperation of Laurie, and Jo's insistent rambling trying to explain herself. It all just captured the very moment as it should be. The cinematography is also swelled, it easily became a part of my list of movie adaptations worth rewatching.

She reiects him... He becomes furios and sad... They make higher their voice tone screaming... Also, I didn’t even know who Timothee Chalamet was until this scene came up and I was attracted to what he brought to this character, even though I did see his previous scenes in this movie, but it didn’t matter because I was focused on the girls and THEIR stories. Here I am, 3 years later and definitely in love with him and I absolutely admire Saorise’s talent in this movie and Lady Bird.

She kept hearing from Meg what she shouldn't do, what she shouldn't say, how she should look like or what she should be wearing, so she eventually believed she can't be loved for who she really is. That actually made me sad the most in this scene.

    • agness2294 I think people believe that Jo and Laurie would be good together, and don’t understand the complexity of the scene when she writes him the letter. They think it’s a genuine realisation of these feelings she’s always had not that she’s fearful of the prospect of being alone. People want to believe in Jo and Laurie, especially since other incarnations of the book and movie make them look so much more suited to each other, but fail to understand why Amy is better for him. Amy actually desires him, and that is what he needs. They also don’t speak at each other which would eventually strain Jo and Laurie’s relationship.

    • @@sparkle9909 Good point! I am just disappointed bacause - in my opinion - this adaptation FINALLY shows this relationships from very different perspectives and explains perfectly that there are various types of love and sometimes they may be confusing (especially for Laurie, who is looking for someone who would be his mother/parent in a way), so I don't know what else we can do to make people believe it is happy ending :D

    • The middle schooler in me will always want them together. Their chemistry (and the actors in this version and 94 version) is so exciting to watch and yes friendship is a great basis for a relationship but as an adult I now realize at this stage in their lives it wouldn’t have been ideal. Do I think Laurie truly loved Amy, not really. I think he wanted to be a part of the March family and could have easily fallen for any one of the girls but I do think Amy helped him mature and grow so ultimately she was the better sister to end up with. My biggest gripe about this adaptation is the dismissal of Fredrich. Jo found her calling in life and married someone who supported her and helped her thrive, the fact that it was left up to the viewer saddened me a little even when it was written that was a radical view to have a career and to be married.

  • The bittersweetness of this scene is so strange. It makes you feel something; not only pitty for Teddy, but also something deep for Jo. It’s knowing that there are some very pure feelings behind the characters in this scene. We have Teddy, who has been in love with this girl that seems like her soulmate since he met her. And then is Joe, who loves Teddy but can’t correspond his feelings, and is doing her absolute best to try to not break his heart without giving up her true self. I wouldn’t like this scene so much of the feelings were reciprocated. I like the purity of two individuals who love each other but want different things from the other. It’s the unavoidable love, the unavoidable harm, the unavoidable loneliness. Two people with a connection that ends up being painful of how much they care for each other; one with an unrequited love, the other one by hating hurting the person she is the closest to.
