Is this not corruption? Is there a website that lists senators and the bills they voted for or against, so we can know whose interests they serve? Or how about a website that reveals the origins of their campaign donations?

Capitalism, like most economic policies, doesn't have a safeguard against human imperfections. If trusts and monopolys aren't regularly broken up, it drags down the free market. In order to have a truly free market, the playing field has to be leveled every few decades.

    • ***** Most European countries do this (called "fee-shifting"), but the reason why the US doesn't fee-shift is that it chills plaintiffs who don't have much money and are afraid of losing to big corporate defendants. We do allow fee-shifting in frivolous patent cases, and a recent case (Octane Fitness) made the standard for recovering fees easier to meet. I'm not ready to completely go to a fee-shifting regime for all cases, but it's clear that it has a place for curbing frivolous lawsuits.

I'd really like to know, because if there is, I'd like people to study it and learn from it to see how we could apply its techniques to other systems. Unfortunately, having watched how my fellow humans act, including some people from abroad who seemed to think our country was so outrageously broken from a political perspective, until I spoke with them and asked them about how things are done in their country and how their governments and companies avoid this sort of abuse, my guess is, what most people who heard about it would probably do would be to study it to figure out how to abuse it. So unfortunately, I feel like I have to request that you keep your answer to yourself. But if you know of such a system, I ask you, be supportive of it.

There exist many "patents" in the US that could never be patented in Germany or the EU as they are simply too primitive or because there is prior art. Like lets say you have a patent for, I dunno, tablecloth weights to prevent the damn things from billowing up when someone exhales. But you never actually MAKE any weights with it, you just sue every Wendy, Marion, and Darryl on Pintrest and Etsy who make tablecloth weights out of fishing gear and fimo clay. Your patent for the idea would expire after two years because you're not actually USING the patent to make anything except money.

This means if it's something trivial everyone else could have come up with, you can't patent it. The problem with that is that the people who are deciding over such things are probably 90 years old and don't know anything about this modern thing called "software" (apart from their electric typewriters). So they let through anything trivial as long as it's described in a complicated manner. Because they don't know better. At least that's my theory.

    • Okay but the point of this is to take serious things and find some humor in them. That's literally his job. Anyone with a brain knows its serious. What a stupidly condescending statement. Maybe you should reconsider the obvious before you offer your comment.

  • Reminder to lobby your congressperson about issues you care about, especially if a relevant bill is on the horizon. They're like untrained pets, they need your constant cajoling in order to do anything. Otherwise, they will just go for the shiny object and cave to corporate lobbyists, or else they'll just lie around and do nothing.

    • Wow. That is apt. I now imagine a video game that has you groom, feed and motivate congresspeople so they do good things in return. Harder difficulties have you fight lobbyists off while maintaining an adequate happiness and stress level. If happiness goes down, they go for the shiny. If stress goes up, they vote erratically. This could have serious depth now that I think about it. I wonder how close we'd come to simulating an actual government.

    • It’s better to make corporate lobbies illegal

      @ianj705@ianj7055 жыл бұрын
    • The problem with having to lobby so hard for your interests: more than half the reason you need to do it is that lobbyists on the opposite side of your argument, with a lot more money than you, have members of Congress in their pockets. Damn, it really sucks that Trump tainted the phrase “drain the swamp”, because that’s what we need: take out all the corrupt politicians and get rid of the lobbyists trying to push harmful corporate agendas, and replace them all with people who actually give a damn about building a better future for this country. With how bad things are now, I think the only way to have anything change is to effectively push the reset button by having the swap happen almost instantly.
