This is the 5th episode of Language Review, a series where I go through the languages of the world and review them! This video discusses Portuguese, mainly from Brazil, but also from around the world.   • As an European Portuguese I feel very sad. You basically didn't talk about Portugal and our culture, you said we talked nasaly when Brasil also does it, we have a lot of culture, a lot of food, good people, beautiful places, including islands, you really missed out on a good opportunity to conquer the trust of one of the greatest and most friendly countries in the world. Sad man.

  • im a native spanish speaker and i remember being picked up in an uber driven by a brazilian woman. she would speak in portuguese and i’d reply in spanish, and we were able to hold conversation without many issues (for the most part lol). but i do feel like portuguese speakers can understand spanish with less issues than a spanish speaker trying to understand portuguese. portuguese speakers let me know if this is true

  • Como moçambicana, meu país tem várias linguas algumas pessoas nao se entendem, entao o português serve como ligação entre essas linguas em que todos podem se comunicar sem causar problemas. O português brasileiro é um pouco diferente do nosso, usamos mais a variação portuguesa. Eu fico muito feliz alguem sabe que nós existimos.

  • My grandmother came to Brasil when she was 21 years old. She kept her accent until the day she died, I guess she was proud of it. Every time I listen portuguese people talking makes me remember of her. One of the most incredible person Ive ever met.

  • I lived in Brasil for a couple of years and learned the language. I still can't pronounce the nasal sounds like a native, but no-one cares. Fun language.

    • Rsrsrsrs I also lived in Colombia for over a year and learned Castilian Spanish. I am German and 6'6" 240 lbs and I speak better Spanish here in the USA (Florida) better than Latinos from P.R. and Mexico y otros.They laugh at me saying "you sound so white!" I can't roll my r's worth shit. Oh well love learning any languages I can. 😂✌

  • The explanation to way we use "feira": "Feira” vem de feria, que, em latim, significa “dia de descanso”. O termo passou a ser empregado no ano 563, após um concílio da Igreja Católica na cidade portuguesa de Braga - daí a explicação para a presença do termo somente na língua portuguesa. Na ocasião, o bispo Martinho de Braga decidiu que os nomes dos dias da semana usados até então, em homenagem a deuses pagãos, deveriam mudar. Mas espera aí: se feria é dia de descanso, por que se usa “feira” apenas nos dias úteis? Isso acontece porque, no início, a ordem do bispo valia apenas para os dias da Semana Santa (aquela que antecede o domingo de Páscoa), em que todo bom cristão deveria descansar. Depois acabou sendo adotada para o ano inteiro, mas só pelos portugueses - no espanhol, no francês e no italiano, os deuses continuam batendo ponto dia após dia. As únicas exceções assumidas pelos nossos irmãos bigodudos - e depois incorporadas nas colônias portuguesas - foram sábado e domingo (Prima Feria, na Semana Santa), que derivam, respectivamente, do hebreu shabbat, o dia de descanso dos judeus, e do latim Dies Dominicus, o “Dia do Senhor”.

  • "A" is the definite article in both Portuguese and Hungarian. I think that's sufficient evidence to declare the two languages related, if not identical.

  • We portuguese speakers call "monday" the second because for us "sunday" is the first, although not everyone thinks that way, that's pretty much the explanation to call monday the second-market (I laughed a lot when I heard you calling segunda-feira like this 😂)

    • Alexandre de Rhodes wrote the first vietnamese-Portuguese dictionary during French colonial time of vietnam and so we do the same thing. Monday in vietnamese is thứ 2 (literally the 2nd day) Tuesday - thứ 3 (3rd day) and so on. We also use "nh" for the ñ sound

  • The coolest thing is that "você" is the fifth degree grandson of other words. In fact, it all started elegantly with "Vossa Mercê", which means the same as "Your Grace" in English. Then, it got really lazy and people started saying "Voss`Merce"... which evolved into "vosmecê" and finally to "vo`cê". But in everyday life, we shorten it even further and just say "Cê" (note: this is just spoken. Never use "cê" in a formal text).

    • @@Mary-ub4qv você tem mesmo um complexo de inferioridade muito baixo e, além disso, ainda tem o complexo de “colonizador” e "civilizador". O seu comentário só mostra o quão complexado você é em relação ao Brasil por já ter sido uma colônia de Portugal e hoje é o grande embaixador da língua portuguesa justamente por ser um país com mais de 220 milhões de falantes nativos da língua portuguesa. O seu problema é que ainda você pensa como uma pessoa do ano de 1500. É espantoso saber que depois de 523 anos ainda existam portugueses que acham que os portugueses trouxeram a civilização ao Brasil e por causa disso vocês são superiores. Quando, na verdade, todos sabem que isso não é verdade. Os portugueses da época trouxeram muito mais destruição e a exploração ao Brasil do que trouxeram propriamente civilização. É claro que houveram aspectos positivos e a língua que compartilhamos é uma delas. Porém, a grande maioria foram aspectos negativos, e, para saber disso, basta abrir o livro de história e verem as atrocidades que os portugueses cometeram no Brasil e em suas outras colônias. Só que para os portugueses custa muito admitir isso, não é? Muitos portugueses não são capazes de admitir que Portugal na sua história causou atos terríveis. Destruiu civilizações, explorou países inteiros, matou milhões de pessoas direta e indiretamente. Isso é uma coisa que vocês portugueses tem que enfrentar, admitir e dizer a verdade.

    • sim, claramente é um vídeo recheado de sarcasmo e humor nonsense de cima abaixo, mas parece que algumas pessoas hoje além de pouco humor têm péssima capacidade de interpretação (pior, não só de textos, mas até de um vídeo cheio de expressões faciais, figuras e muito mais sugestões explícitas de como ele deve ser interpretado!!!). É engraçado como as pessoas focam excessivamente no negativo, e não no positivo (i.e. que ele simplesmente exaltou ao nível máximo a língua portuguesa).

    • It's because in our language, consonants at the end of words aren't common, so we tend to put a vowel there, usually and i or e. This is also seen when a lusophone starts to learn another language, the accent becomes perceptible.

  • Em relação aos dias da semana: o "feira" no final é uma derivação de "feria" (descanso em Latim). No começo era usado apenas na Semana Santa, antes da Páscoa, pois todos os dias eram dias de descanso, mas com o tempo os portugueses adotaram isso para todos os dias do ano. Quanto a semana começar com "segunda": para nós a semana começa no domingo, "monday" é segunda porque a semana começa em "sunday". Ainda falando sobre os dias, domingo também é uma derivação do latim "Dies Domenicus" (Dia do Senhor) e sábado do hebraico "shabbat", dia de descanso.   • The term "market" appeared in Portuguese because, during Easter week, every day was a public holiday, like holidays, and the market was open-air, like markets. Preserving Sunday, the God's Day, or something like that, as the first day of the week, the church instituted the second market, the second market (Monday/segunda-feira) and so on.

  • Eu entendo os portugueses reclamado de falta de representatividade, mas a realidade é que vocês são minoria entre os falantes de português. Ainda que a língua tenha vindo de seu país, as pessoas acabam por preferir a versão brasileira por ser mais acessível e mais fácil de encontrar conteúdos, já que muito mais gente fala português brasileiro. É semelhante com o espanhol, a maioria das pessoas que aprendem, falam o espanhol latino porque é como se comunicam de maneira mais efetiva com a maior quantidade de falantes. Logo, vídeos assim não são apenas para agradar brasileiros, e sim a grande maioria dos que aprendem português também. E por último, falta muito do empenho de vocês, é raríssimo ver conteúdos do idioma português com o sotaque de Portugal, talvez se tivesse mais, as pessoas veriam mais além de apenas o "Portuguese with Leo".

    • Actually, "feira" in "segunda-feira", etc, comes from "féria", meaning "free day" (that's why "vacations" is "férias"). St Martin of Braga didn't accepted that pagan names were used in the Holy Week, and, then, changed their names. In the Middle Ages, the Holy Week was dedicated for resting, so St Martin choose names that reflect it: the second free day, the third, etc. Only "Sábado" and "Domingo" kept their names, because they weren't pagan names after all: "Sábado" comes from Hebrew "shabat" and "Domingo" comes from Latin "Dies Domini", "Day of the Lord".

  • In portuguese we call the days of the week a number along with feira because: - it's so much easier with numbers - feira comes from "feriado" which means holiday. That is because during easter, every day of the week is a holiday. It just so happens to be the word for market, too.   • Bro, you totally missed out on Portugal. I feel like this was more of a review on the Brazilian portuguese than Portugal portuguese. I swear, lovely video, I laughed a lot, but I recommend digging deeper on European portuguese (And African portuguese as well), you will not regret it! Even though it's the same language, sometimes when portuguese and brazilians speak to each other it feels like there's a language barrier 🤣 I'm not even kidding! Anyways, even though we are a small country, we are one of the oldest countries in the world, so I think you missed out on us a lot!

In other words, Lusitano is another way of naming the Portuguese people. 8:48 “Feira” comes from 'feria', which, in Latin, means “day of rest”. The term began to be used in the year 563, after a council of the Catholic Church in the Portuguese city of Braga - hence the explanation for the presence of the term only in the Portuguese language. On that occasion, Bishop Martinho de Braga decided that the names of the days of the week used until then, in honor of pagan gods, should change. But wait a minute: if 'feria' is a rest day, why is “feira” only used on working days? The 'Saturday' is the 'Prima Feria' (first rest, or "The rest day"), which derive, respectively, from the Hebrew 'shabbat', the day of rest of the Jews, and from the Latin 'Dies Domini', the “Day of the Lord”; then 'Monday' is the second day after the Sabbath, and so on.

  • The names for the days of the week are do not actually mean "market". That word just evolved over time to be associated with commerce and then became "market". You start the week at sunday, which in portuguese is "domingo" which came from "dominicus" (dies domini) aka "day of the lord" and was also known as "prima feria". "Feria" roughly means "feast" as a "liturgical feast". It evolved into a sense of "free day". These "free days" or "feast days" were used for your normal everyday commerce in towns (for example) where commerce took place. This made the connection of "feira" to "commerce/market". Since sunday was the day of the lord, christians didn't work on that day since it was the day when god rested after his creation, so the "prima feria" was kinda sidelined. That's why you have "domingo" (sunday) and then "segunda-feira" (monday). "Sábado" (satuday) simply comes from "sabbath" which is the "actual" end of the week for the jewish. In portuguese the name of the days of the week have christian/jewish backgrounds and themes while the english names are associated with planets and pagan (roman) origins. Sunday = day of the sun, monday = day of the moon, tuesday = day of mars, wednesday = day of mercury, thursday = day of jupiter, friday = day of venus and saturday = day of saturn. Because english is a germanic language, some names are more connected to the germanic (saxon) words like tuesday coming from Tiw (Tyr), wednesday coming from Wodan (Odin), thursday is Thor's day and friday is Frigg's day. I just find a bit sad that this video is basically entirely about brazilian which isn't even the origin of the language. It's like talking about english and only speak about the american side.

  • As someone who is very much a beginner / low intermediate speaker of Portuguese, I’m glad to finally discover why I have a habit of pronouncing my S’s as SH when I speak the language. I’m not especially used to hearing the differences between dialects and have just gotten used to essentially speaking a mixture of Port and Brasil Portuguese

    • basically the geografical half of brazil (rio and and the northeastern and north regions) pronounces "s" as "sh". and one of the accents from the northeastern region can pronounce it as "h" as well when its at the end of words

  • Sempre me ensinaram que para enaltecer algo não é preciso rebaixar o resto, com atitudes que roçam o desrespeito e a soberba. Claro que pretende agradar uma grande faixa de público, mas como a nossa história já mostrou somos poucos mas somos bons (veja a Batalha de Diu em que 17 navios portugueses destruíram 200 navios adversários). Para além, de demonstrar um total desconhecimento e falta de preparação para abordar os temas que abordou, só alimenta ódio entre países que partilham um grande passado histórico e cultural.
