  • As a landscaper of a few years now, I'd like to point out that it might be way easier to have one large motor spin two blades instead of all the smaller blades. This will disperse the grass farther out and will have a much higher speed at the cutting edge, meaning that it would cut more effectively even when dull. It would probably save battery power too. Hope you read this.

The government will pass laws precisely to stop the "just hims" to make sure the corporations can make bank. Did you know that the 1968 gun control act was envisioned by Thomas J. Dodd, a Connecticut politician with ties to the Connecticut gun industry? Connecticut was home of Colt, Winchester, Savage, Stag Arms, Mossberg & Sons, Sturm Ruger, etc. and the gun industry was suffering from the competition of war-bringbacks and surplus. Millions of rifles already bought and paid for during wartime that were sold to importers for pennies on the dollar were much cheaper to sporterize than buy factory new. That's just an example that's fresh on my mind because I learned it in a podcast the other day, the point is that corporations write laws that they know they can follow but stifle competition.

I would think that your next major step would be to put larger diameter wheels on your 'car' and move the cutter to the center. Try using some spare TPU filament as like a 'weedeater line' type cutter, or even better yet pick up a weedeater head and some line. It will handle the rough scraggle much better than those spinning xacto blades of doom.

  • This is an awesome project! One thing to keep in mind- if this were to go on tour autonomous vehicle and run every day, it wouldn’t be mowing down tall grass. The grass would only grow so little, those little blades would be great! Take for example all the autonomous lawn mowers coming to market. Their blades are super tiny, but that okay because they’re only cutting a few millimeters of grass a day.

    • I think lawn mowers are optimized for humans, so they are about the size a human can push while still being big so it's faster work. For something that's autonomous, the time won't matter as much so it can be smaller. Weed whackers work just fine and are smaller. I think the largest issue here was that there was nowhere for the cuttings to go - it needs to push them to the side or something.

Heck, I'm in a power wheelchair and I'd totally use something like this to help elderly or other disabled people by mowing their lawns people's yards. You can have fun using an RC car AND be productive! • Couple things i noticed, (long time landscaper) I would suggest taking a look at commercial lawn mower decks. Look at the grass "pathway" tothe exit shoot on the right. They purposely have it all going to the same exit point and use the front edge of the deck as a channel. The smoother the spot that the grass travels at, the better it will expel. Also would suggest angling the deck upward in the front. Sounds odd, but I think if you had say 15% angle(?) on it it would help. So you would essentially set the rear at the desired cut height. This allows the front side to start cutting at a slight higher cut height and finish lower in the back. May help, and really just a thought. One really big thing i can say is, even with a $25k commercial mower, they dont easily go through grass above 5-6" let alone if wet. Starting at like a 4" cut height would help a lot. Also what if instead of exacto blades, try it more like a weed wacker?

The fingers on a corn header just help to direct the corn onto the cutters and keep it from folding away; meanwhile, on a self-propelled mower, there's a big wheel like on a wheat head.

Normal lawnmower blades have a angled part at the rear of the blade which causes the chopped grass pieces to fly up into the mower deck where they are bounced around until they make their way to the outsides of the mower and ejected. With completely flat blades, the mowed grass chunks fall back into the mower blades where they are rechopped and gum up the mower

This top pair of knives can be hidden fully inside the shroud to increase airflow efficiency and should just mulch and expel the grass. Use pairs of 2 heads and have them counter rotate, and attach them to 1 motor so you can have them overlap while never hitting each other. This will make the result look better and help expel the grass from the shroud. And most importantly, add holes in the back of the shroud where the grass can exit the shroud. Augers like some suggested shouldn't be necessary, they are used when sucking up the grass and moving it towards the vacume or for processing like in a harvester. The faster you can get rid of the mown grass the better it will work. The more airflow the better. The shape of the shroud can help, make the "tunnel" towards the exit taller the closer you get to exit as there will be more grass on those locations. Final suggestion, use 2 heads in front as wide as the crawler, later you can attach additional mowers on the side, 2 between the wheels and if you want 2 on longer arms at the rear.

  • The concept is sound. But take it from someone who has been in lawncare for 30+ years. This would be great for a maintained lawn but you're trying to use it as a brushcutter. A few design changes I would make are as follows: - Pitch the trailing edge of the blades to about 15 degrees. This will provide airflow to help lift un-cut blades of grass, and to blow away the cut ones. -Take a look at most lawn tractor mower-decks which use multi-blade setups. The front of the deck is flat, while the rear is curved to hug the blades. Additionally, notice how the front of the deck increases in height toward the discharge chute. as the first blade cuts grass in its path, it will throw the grass toward the discharge chute and over the second blade down the line. The second blade also cutting ad discharging grass over the third, and so on. with each pass toward the chute, more clippings are being transported, thus needing more room to transport them. Hence the raise in the top-front edge leading to the chute. The top-rear of the deck can remain flat. Basically, build a mower-deck using the design from a typical lawn tractor deck, while adapting it to use your 4-blade configuration. Side note, The swing-away blades are a nice touch though. You'll see those on brush-hogs to allow the blade to deflect off of a hard object rather than breaking or bending due to being rigid. Another idea, one that I have wanted to try for a while is a rear-discharge deck. That rise toward the cute would begin on each outer side of the front of the deck and peak in the middle.then carry rearward to a rear-facing opening. however, the leading area two sets of blades would each need to rotate toward the center so the clippings can all be transported toward the chute, and thrown rearward. However it would be good to add a wedge at the front to the deck, between the the two centermost sets of blades to prevent the right side from trying to throw it's clipping into the left side & vice-versa. Helps to think of mower decks as centrifugal fans. think of airflow or fluid dynamics, and where you want it to go. Hope all that made sense.

  • Ditch the spinning blades! What you REALLY need is a scythe blade mounted at an angle up front, statically, and just drive it through the grass. Where i live we don't have flat ground or grass so i can't do it, but i bet it'd pretty cool to mount a couple of scythe blades on a FAST RC truck so they part the grass and full send it through the field. See if you can cut grass at like 50mph with a big fast 4wd truck and toss clippings into the air with a wedge shaped body. THAT'D be COOL! Thumbs up if you want to see him build this!

  • You should look back Into a tow behind mower. I live on a hay farm and the hay bine that we use has a rotating tongue so that it cuts new to the tractor. This is very effective in a clockwise direction as the tractor stays in the already cut grass allowing for just the cutter to interfere with the tall grass. This would help with you lack of power/traction issues.

  • To stop your tank flipping relocate the the hitch to the lowest point on the hull as your moment is to high. Lower the better ! Edit: instead of angling forward angle up as I believe that will help chop up the grass and less build up due to cutting high then low as the first blade hits the apex high then low points. This will have an effect on the motors really you need a full width blade. Cool build.

  • You have the front of the shroud open to allow the grass in, but why did you leave the back of the shroud on keeping it in? You need to let the grass out, it would help prevent the grass from clogging up the shroud. A side discharge is okay but since you won't be walking behind it to push, you don't really need to put it to the side. Plus if you want to make picking up the grass easier too, a rear discharge might be the simplest solution as you can add a drum with spokes (like a combine harvester) in front of or above a bag or collection bin to automatically pick it up for you. You'd definitely have a solid machine, and with the new motors you have the torque, so why not use it? just make sure to add better protection to the lower sections (maybe a plate or two either flat or at an angle) for the gear assembly housings, driveshafts and linkages.
