‘Clippit’ or ‘Clippy’ as you might know him, made his way onto millions of computers around the globe in the late nineties. The trusty paperclip fended off countless other characters before rising to fame upon his selection as Microsoft Office 97’s default assistant.
Despite always being on hand to offer helpful suggestions and useful tips, Clippy’s input wasn’t always appreciated. His diligent gaze and shape-shifting animations divided opinion amongst the masses.
The virtual character has left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside him. Now possessing a nostalgic charm, he continues to remind people of a simpler time in technology.

I remember messing with him and changing the character to the wizard or dog. Now that he's gone we remember him from our childhood. I doubt people older than us care for him. • Bob was perhaps a mistake, but their hearts were in the right place: make computers accessible to people who do not understand computers. Clippy was way ahead of his time. People weren't reading help files, so Clippy was there to help you with the things you would have learned if you spent time digging around the help files. He was also the precursor of modern voice assistants like Aleksa, Siri or Google Assistant.

  • My problem with Clippy wasn't Clippy itself. It was the whole app and how it got in the way of my work flow. I was a power MS Office User back in the day (and still am), but that whole Microsoft Assistant program really was designed for people who had never used computers before. Sure, it might have been a good thing for them, but it was a headache for me. And because Clippy was the default for the assistant app, he was the face for the whole thing. And that's probably why he got so much hate. It wasn't the character, but the program he was tied to.

  • I didn't hate clippy exactly, it was just in the way when I wanted to do something else. The thing is, every UI redesign is like that. All the buttons, controls and widgets move about and I've got to learn to use the software again. It slows me down, or in extreme cases stops me doing a task I was previously able to do. The software and UI designers appears to think these changes will excite me, but in reality they frustrated me because I care about the task not the tool. Imagine how bad it would be if I had to learn how to use a spade again each time I wanted to dig a hole. What made Clippy different was that we had a name and face to associate with, and blame for, this frustration. Clippy maybe gone but the underlying problem remains

  • "Characters that could tell what you were trying to do" The absolute genius of this approach can't be overstated. Bob was RIGHT. Unfortunately, MS was 20+ years early. The tech couldn't support the vision. Now we have modern generative AI, which is fulfilling the vision of computer literacy and power for all of us - especially those who don't know, or don't care to know, anything about how computers work. One of the things Bill Gates admired most about his ex-wife Melinda was her involvement and vision in bringing Bob to life. It wasn't the implementation. It was the spirit. It was YEARS ahead of anything Apple had done. TBF, Bill also saw $$$$$ and he was eager to one-up Steve Jobs. But he also understood where this could go. Bob and Clippy deserve far more respect than they normally get.

  • I always liked Clippy, he was cute. But I admit I didn't have to work 'with' him that much. I also really liked the cat. I would literally have him in the corner of my monitor as I worked as like an office pet 🙂

  • I remember clippy so vividly from my childhood. My mom found him really annoying but I loved him and his different funny animations.

  • I always loved Clippy. It's good to see that many people also started to love him. Clippy even has got back to Windows 11, where he is used as... paperclip emoji!

    • Either you were a kid back when you first worked with Office or you are wearing rose tinted glasses. Anyone who worked with Office long enough "back da old dayz" would come to hate Clippy because he oftentimes never gave the right answer and was just in the way.

  • The design of clippy was great! The practical use of him not so much. If you want to put hints and messages in front of the user, seasoned users will inherently get annoyed by them because they see it as a useless obstacle. And if you give those messages a face, it gives those people something personal to direct their anger towards

  • I at first disliked Clippy for not able to close it out. But when trying out different characters, like a dog or princess, they didnt do any fun things, they just move a little and no interactions. Clippy was able to move and contort into different shapes and movements that makes it so flexible to express what it was trying to do.

    • The dog did things! The best was when you'd print something and he'd put a piece of paper with a paw print on it under his collar. Who remembers the wizard that would snore if you didn't do anything for five minutes?
