A Beginners Guide to Using a Charcoal Grill
In this video I teach the basics of using a charcoal grill. I'm using a standard Weber 22 inch kettle grill, which in my opinion sets the standard for all other kettle grills. I cover everything from setting the grill up, to choosing your charcoal, to which accessories and utensils you will need. I will link to the grill and accessories below.

Audio Fella same 🤣🤣🤣
Audio Fella ME RN
Audio Fella just read my mind
This is the gold standard for how-to videos on KZhead. Clearly-framed, perfect narration, and none of the nonsense filler. Perfect.
Thank you so much!
And accent.
Kitchen Alpha thanks for the vid man! My buddy and I are goin camping soon so this helped a lot.
You forgot the polished accent!
Yes none of the 10 minute long introduction to subscribe and enter for a chance to win some grill items from walmart instead of target 🤣 good video
As a northerner, I found your accent added instant credibility to the subject.
Thank you for watching!
@@KitchenAlpha YOU ARETHE BEST NARRATOR
If you dont have an accent like this, im not taking any bbq tips from you.
Jay Waldon big facts
True that.😂
The reason why I watched the whole thing a liked the video (hahaa)
lolol
I literally just said the same thing
This guy is the Morgan Freeman of charcoal grill narration
What! Oh my goodness, what an outstanding parallel! I love it
Wantel Creasy i laughed outloud at this comment
LMAO!!!
Wantel Creasy its a niche.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
The second he started talking and I heard that accent, I knew everything this man would say was pretty much gospel when it comes to barbecuing.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I literally thought the same thing! lol
He is friends with Hank Hill so of course
Thank you! I got myself a little charcoal bbq to take out to the park. As a single mom, I have to figure out things as I go! This video, simple as it may seem, is SO incredibly helpful for me! I'll be using this new knowledge to feed my kids (and many friends) this summer and for years to come! Thanks again!
Glad to help! It's actually really simple once you get the hang of it!
Hello from Texas! 43 yr old female here, i just bought a used 22 inch Weber, thanks for the video!!
After watching this my dog became a texas ranger
Thx so much. I joined the military and they’ve got me in a training command where they give us rooms that are like dorms. We don’t have an oven so if you wanna cook your own food there’s a microwave or you can use the grills provided outside. About two months in, I was really regretting not paying attention to my parents when they grilled 😂😂. Thx, the video helped a lot. Great accent too. I hear a lot of that in Louisiana.
Thank you for service! May God bless you!
Used charcoal for the first time last week and I don't think I'll ever go back to propane. Your video helped a ton. Straight to the point, no BS. Thanks!
Glad you pointed out the difference between lump and briquettes. I use lump when I cook steak or chicken breasts but the briquettes I use for when longer cooks in excess of 30 minutes.
I love to use lump charcoal when I have the chance.
I never knew there was a difference!
The accent is so good
+Will Melbourne I'm glad you like it! Lol
Will Melbourne I gave the video a thumbs up just because of that hahaha
The second i heard that Forrest Gump deep south drawl I subbed:):)
Amazing
His voice is soothing
Just wanted to say that I’m really grateful for your videos. I’ve just bought my first grill - a Weber - and I’m gearing up to my first barbecue (meaning I’m the one grilling and not just sitting down and eating). This is a first class tutorial and I can’t wait to binge watch the others. I’m in Portugal by the way and I know I’m learning from from the best! So big thanks from the other side of the ocean!
I'm tired of eating late because I wait for my husband to get home from work. Now, not only can I do it myself! I will look like a star doing it!! Thank you! Subscribed!
When I heard your voice, I just knew everything would be alright
I love how I immediately recognised the accent even though I'm Italian and never been to America! Cheers!
Thanks for watching and commenting!
If you haven't been to the Southern States, you're not missing much. Lots of NASCAR, country music, and fried food.
actually the best instructional grill video I've seen
Thank you so much. I'm glad my video was able to help you. I hope you enjoy grilling as much as I do!
I don’t think anyone could ask for a better teacher. I live in Alabama and still have yet to hear a voice that glorious!
I loooooove to cook but admittedly am still a total newbie in learning.... This video was so clear, concise, and easy to follow and didn't make me feel dumb for not knowing how to use a charcoal grill! Thank you for this!!
I watched this first last Monday and it helped a lot! Last week i was using a weber mini kettle that id gotten from work. This week I received a full size kettle and it really brings back memories. This is how my dad used to grill and.. god rest his soul. Food for the soul!! Thank you for this video, sir!
Hey your very welcome! I love hearing things like this. I'm glad I was able to help you!
Getting ready to transition back to charcoal after more years than I care to admit on gas. Just need to finish my current tank of propane then I’m getting a Weber kettle. I’ve watched so many different videos and am continuing to watch many more. This particular video is the best, most succinct starter video for novices that I’ve seen. I love that you have a basic setup without all the fancy accessories. That is exactly what I’m going for! Thank you for taking the time to put this together. Subscribed.
Thank you thank you thank you!! I love your accent and I feel more comfortable with bbqing on Monday for my friends and family. I can't wait ! Thanks again!!
Thanks! My dad never taught me this stuff because he worked nights while I was growing up so I appreciate it!
Thanks so much for this video. I've been cooking for many years, but always avoided the outside grill because nothing ever turned out right. Your instructional videos are just what I needed. Can't wait to get a grill now! ( Also appreciate that your videos are clean, and to the point!)
I will never say charcoal again, only Charco! This guy is the only voice behind a grill I'll ever need to listen to.
I've just started taking BBQing seriously whilst locked down in England and really enjoyed this video, very clear, to the point, no annoying music, informative...and of course, love that accent! Thanks
Well that didn't go as I'd hoped. Cooked my brisket for 8 hours and was expecting it to fall apart but it was tough as old boots. I think the temperature got too low, I've always struggled with cooking with the lid on my kettle bbq, it just seems to kill the coals no matter what I do with the vents!
This may be the best thing on KZhead right now. I knew my friends didn’t know how to grill. 😂😂😂
Best, straightforward charcoal BBQ guide on KZhead. Great stuff!
Thank you my friend for all of this. I never used a charcoal grill and used your channel's content to help me go from charcoal newbie to being confident enough to make an amazing turkey breast on Thanksgiving for my family. Keep the great content up!!!
Never been great at grilling so I watched this video to refresh the basics. Thanks for the tips.
There's something about grilled food that just makes it taste so much better.
There's something about grilled food that just makes it taste so much better.
I truly appreciate you answering all my questions in one video. This is clear and to the point. I believe I will be able to do this now! Thank you
*hears his accent* Thank god I finally found a guy who knows what he's talking about!
I could listen to you for hours, thank you for this introduction!
His accent and teaching skills made me a better person ❤❤❤❤❤I love this video
I’m somebody who never grilled. But I want to learn. I needed this video. Thank you
Very good this mate. Clear simple instruction. Much appreciated.
That is the EXACT accent I wanted to hear when learning how to bbq. Lol
Just from the accent, you know this guy knows how to BBQ! Thank you!
I grew up with a natural gas grill that was tied into the house, and now I have a propane grill. But, I promised I'd grill something at a cookout in a couple weeks, and all they have there is charcoal. This was super helpful in figuring out how to us it!
Thank you ! I literally knew nothing about grilling and I really would love to finally start ☺️.
I hope you give it a shot! I think you will love it once you get started.
I haven't started the whole video yet, but it gets a thumbs up from me. Judging by the accent alone I know I'll have a hell of a BBQ this weekend
How have I not had this Appalachian BBQ Jesus in my life. Awesome video!
Thank you.👍! I haven't used a charcoal grill and just bought one. Very comprehensive, and your accent is very relaxing.
i’m so used to my stepdad’s amazing grilling skills, so i want to be able to do it on my own too! this video is super helpful thank you
Great video, thanks for sharing your knowledge about grilling.
Most videos skip over a lot of this stuff and for someone brand new to grilling like me this helps a lot. Thank you for the video!
I’m from the U.K., when I heard the accent I knew 100% I was going to be educated proper on BBQ use by a master in his craft.
Best guide ever. Grillings always been something I’ve wanted to do. This guide was really helpful and helped me understand enough To be confident in starting!
Thank you for watching!
Thank you for a simple video. no acting or bs. I love how I found a video the just showed me what I needed to know and that’s all. I’ve been grilling for years on charcoal grill but I’ve never really understood even the simplest stuff you pointed out. I appreciate it.
Some videos it gets to complicated, this kept it nice and simple, great comment.
Thank you! I just got a Weber charcoal grill. Your instructions were clear and simple to follow.
After years of dealing with propane grills and the never-ending problems with replacing the ignitor, running out of propane, and having an ant farm to deal with after taking the cover off every spring - I decided on an old-fashioned charcoal grill. Simple? Maybe - but I didn't have a clue how to use it - it's been decades since I knew anyone who had one. This is a perfect video - especially since you explain all the accessories you'll need and the different types of charcoal available. Thank you!!
O my goodness!! Thank you for being so thorough but keeping it simple!! This is an EXCELLENT how-to video!!! No longer intimidated by the charcoal grill.
I hope you enjoyed this video! Leave a comment below and be sure to subscribe!
i thought u mite cook us something?
Kitchen Alpha How do you turn off the charcoal once you have finished cooking. Do you pour water or just let it burn out? Can it be reused, in case you pour water?
Love love love your southern bubba accent
thank you! i just bought this grill this summer and have had 5 unsuccessful attempts. I know now (after your video) how to do this. I won't give my grill away - i will try again. Thanks.
I just did it yesterday.I fed eight people using your methods of grilling and you know what....aftet that delicious bbq/ i was surprised that i did so good/all of them...start speaking with wonderful southern accent.God bless brother.!!!Greetings from Bulgaria.
Making the switch from gas to original Weber Kettle. This video has everything a novice needs. Much thanks!
Short, sweet, and to the point.
Thank you!
this was the most helpful video i found! thank you! i'm so excited to start grilling
Thanks! I'm glad I was able to help. I hope you enjoy grilling!
I appreciate you for this channel and wish I had found it years ago. I’ve always had a charcoal grill but don’t use it often cause I never could figure out how to control my heat. Thank you!!!
I'm no beginner. Truth is I just like to watch the grill get heated. It's so satisfying to watch. Every time I grill, I watch these videos while I eat. Let's be honest. Grilling is fun.
I subscribed just to hear the accent.
+Chris Broach haha thanks for the sub!
I just watched this since I am learning how to cook and he was really clear Good job man👍
Thank you!
This is super helpful! I'm in charge of grilling for the 4th of July tomorrow and had no idea what I was doing-- until now!
This was so helpful!! Thanks so much for making such a clear and easy video to follow, very excited to grill now!
Bro your accent is sickkk ahahh love it. Greetings from Australia
I'm here because my ex made me feel like less of a man because I had everything that makes a man resourceful but grilling skill wasn't one of them. Now that she's gone to hell I figured I'd learn some grill skills.
She's dead?
Dont feel bad. I'm 31 years old barely trying to learn how to bbq myself
Marvin Roberts update?
Marvin Roberts hope the grilling journey is going good brother
lmao
Brandsmart needs his voice for holiday sales like Spring n Summer.
Southern folks are experts in bbq. Real talent dates back centuries. Cheers !
I'm 13 and tryin to learn to cook and grill since I'm not planning to get married! Thanks!
Your welcome! Grilling is awesome and addictive!
Do not get married.
+Andrew Scarella MGTOW!
What's wrong with getting married?
young man, one day you'll meet a girl that will change your mind and guess what? you still be grilling because you want too.
As soon as he started speaking I knew I was in the hands of a professional
Im from New Zealand and felt like forest gump was narrating this video... subscribing. Now! Love the accent
The accent tells us everything we need to know: he knows exactlyyyyy what to do and how to cook a good BBQ! Thanks for the tips
Just switched from gas and had our first charcoal grill cook tonight. I think I'll buy one of those chimneys, but I'm hooked!
+Bushcraft North of 60 charcoal is a little more work but definitely worth it to me!
Kitchen Alpha We have Kingsford coals here in Australia and I found there a bitch to light definitely lump charcoal is the way to go, as for the chimney I prefer just to use firelighters usually 2 or 3.
Those work well too! I use the lump variety of charcoal more often than the other. Its all a matter of personal preference I think. Happy grilling!
Need to get me those lumps then
Taste alot better when you use a chemeney starter.
I knew I found an expert, but when I heard “mop your meat” I knew we could be friends.
Perfect video - clear, visual demonstration and to the point. Thanks so much!
About to move into my first home 🏠 and I’m a rookie at grilling so this vid helped me out a lot! 2 of my older brothers have this same grill and they make grilling look so easy!
Great video man, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you for watching my video!
Watching this at 3 am while still having work in the morning
A year later.. & its 4 am here
This is so helpful. It's shocking how little I know about grilling. Thank you so much!
Of course you have a southern accent haha! Thanks my man, you just helped out a helpless city boy in hosting a bbq
Man you covered it all in one video! Just got my first weber kettle and you just inflated my confidence in one quick vid! That you sir. Got a new subscriber for life here!!
+Jesto Freestone hey I appreciate you watching! I'm glad I was able to help. Happy grilling!
Great video. Extremely informative!
Thanks! I'm glad my video was helpful to you!
Excellent! Many thanks for those of us new to charcoal grilling! 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for the knowledge brotha. Love the video and the music with it. Appreciate it.
damn. you know someone with this accent knows how the hell to grill! it's a birthright!
Same thing I said
I gave away my beloved propane gril yesterday and am making the switch. I used that grill for 14 years (no kidding). She served me well. My wife is worried about the smokey flavor being too much. I will play around with different charcoal to test out things. Thanks for the video. Great job!
Hey thanks for watching! I hope that you find one that you like. Gas is a little more convenient but I love the taste you get from charcoal. I'm glad my video helped!
Tom Lilly
Tom Lilly good riddance. That gas grill was trash any ways. I bought a gas grill, and i regret it. What i do with my gas grill, is I just take two deep aluminum backing pans and i fiil them up with charcoal. And then i but that shit shot in the bottom part of my grill, and put the meat on the top grill gate. Boom! I turned my gas grill into a regular convention grill. It's kinda ghetto, but whatever. It works. And best of all, there's little to know clean up. All i do is dump the aluminum baking pans, and fill them back up with charcoal again, and i scrub the top grill gate. I guess I didn't have to throw away my gas grill after all.
This accent is rich and sweet, with hints of hickory and peppercorn, it has a smooth texture. I recommend putting this accent on whatever kind of meat you're grilling!
Thanks brother! This video was a tremendous help in getting my grill on!
I LOVE your accent. I'm from Maryland and we just never hear it there. Also, can you do a video on mini grills and their capabilities/limits? I just got one and not sure how to set it up or anything.
Thanks for watching. That's a topic I may try to cover in the near future as I want to do some camp cooking related videos. My grand parents actually moved to Baltimore when my dad was a child. They stayed there for a while and my papaw worked on a ship yard. After they saved up some money they came back here to Kentucky. I want to visit Maryland sometime.
Very informative. I'll have to get one of those charcoal chimneys.
Thanks and yes they are an awesome way to get your coals hot and ready for cooking!
@@KitchenAlpha is it necessary to have a charcoal chimney? i was hoping there was a more basic way of heating the coals
Kitchen Alpha do it really need the charcoal chimney can I do it without and how ?
Best video I have seen in a long time. Very helpful for anyone first starting out with a Webber grill. A+ great job on the video , please continue to share your helpful tips with us beginners 👍👍👍

this guy could not sound more southern if he tried
very nice video! Very much appreciated as i am city slicker and have only grilled using propane, butane grills or a stove
Very well explained! I’m new to grilling and trying to teach my son. I’m from the south and appreciate this!
