  • I don't know if this true or not but I read on IMDb that George Lucas initially considered legendary Hong Kong action director Sammo Hung to choreograph the lightsaber fights in the prequel trilogy. Nick Gillard did an amazing job and created an entirely new form of sword fighting. But imagine if we got one of the greatest fight choreographers of all time behind the prequel lightsaber duels.......Maybe there's still a chance given the Star Wars franchise is still going fairly strong?

    • I found out some days that it's official. It's been stated in multiple sources that Sammo Hung was considered as the role of fight choreographer in the prequels. I posted the IMDb article in a facebook group and the actual storyboard artist behind the phantom menace himself replied and said he recommended Sammo to George Lucas. Along with other famous HK action directors like Jackie Chan, Yuen Woo-Ping, Chin Siu-Tung, and some others.

    • @@jamyangpelsang3099 That'a cool fight. I'm a lifelong fan of asian cinema and choreography. However, I have yet to see a chinese sword fight that could blow my mind not in terms of speed, technique or performance, but in terms of creativity when it comes to different moves. Gillard basically blended a bunch of styles to create a style of his own. So even though I'm a huge fan of Sammo Hung, I like the way things are as of now. But they could've invited Sammo Hung or Donnie Yen, for example, to be the main stunt coordinator for the sequels, which they didn't, and it's a shame

    • @@tedxenium5120 interesting that you find a lack of creativity in Asian style sword fights, I've seen plenty of them with very creative moves that I've otherwise never seen anywhere else, but Nick Gillard definitely created an entirely new form of swordplay with the prequel style lightsaber combat, in the end I'm glad he choreographed them because I don't think we would've ever seen that kind of bladework in any other movie...

    • One of the things I thought they got right about the sequel movies was that the lightsaber fighting went back to basics. There's a tendency for on-screen fights to get overly pretty. In the style of Asian movies and their frankly unrealistic style of martial arts fighting. Not only is it 'unrealistic' but it's impossible to follow except as a display of virtuosity. Far more enjoyable is a blow-by-blow exchange between characters. I think the Phantom Menace did it about right. It was fast and furious, but not unnecessarily so.

  • Honestly because of Ahsoka's well placed history, she is probably the most ripe already set character to have her own series. The history with Anakin, and the story of her lightsabers, her dipping into dark and light, great stuff. The CGI Star Wars series, well, except for the new too kiddy one, are really good mostly. Especially the story. And hey, if the stunt actress can act, have her be Ahsoka in a live action series. Why keep looking for a 'real actress' for the acting when you have what you need. If she can't, well, definitely in as the stunt actress for the entire run i'd say. And yeah, the series runner sets the stage, leave the fights to the stunt crew, coordinate if you want somethgin special to happen during the fight. Leave the people that know their shit do their stuff, it gives the best results just about all the time.

  • I think Ahsoka/Maul is great because, exactly as for Ahsoka/Vader in Rebels (have you willingly left it away???) and others, it has not so many useless flourishes. It focuses on the adversary's annihilation, self-survival and nothing more. What I've seen in your school (which resembles so much Obi/Ani final battle) is certainly awesome, a joy for the eye and great for an exhibition, but simply won't fit in a story, risking on the other side to distract from the drama. I believe each fight should be carefully tailored on the characters and on the moment of the plot, not just "make it beautiful".

    @EmanueleCorsi@EmanueleCorsi3 жыл бұрын
    • There are different types of conflict. Ahsoka vs Maul and Anakin vs Obi-Wan are different because there are different relationships between them and different stakes as well. This is a pretty common theme in the Star Wars fights - many times the duelists do not want to kill each other immediately (Obi-Ani, Vader - Luke both times, Dooku vs Obi and Anaking in episode two) thus making their fight look more like an expression of their emotions rather than just a straight up assassination attempt/self defense. This gives us much more room for maneuver in terms of choreography. Ahsoka vs Maul does not lack flashy moves and flourishes, watch it again. We only decided to break down the Ahsoka vs Maul battle because there was a great story behind it's creation (with motion capture and all) and great martial artists involved.

Turning would be suicide in combat as it leave you vulnerable and leaves an opening for you opponent to strike you maybe for a split second. • A New Hope kick-started everything and thrived with its only lightsaber duel between two old characters. Empire Strikes Back is regarded as one of the best movies in the series, and it's lightsaber duel doesn't have anywhere near the choreography that the Duel of Fates does. I love the passion that you guys are putting into this series, and into the school of saberfighting in general, but I really don't think Star Wars can be boiled down to spectacle. The prequels are full of spectacle, but they really fail fundamentally at storytelling. I know people are starting to appreciate the elements of them that work, but I hope that never comes at the cost of criticizing what made them so universally panned in the first place. Spectacle isn't everything. Choreography does not save or fix or make up for a failed story.

    @erlewis1111@erlewis11113 жыл бұрын
    • It does not fix or make up for a failed story, however, it is as important, but imagine a brand new Mercedes Benz S-Class with plastic toy steering wheel. Makes zero sense, right? That's how I feel about a movie with good storytelling and visuals, but poor fight choreography. If it's a Scorcsse movie, for example, I'd look the other way when Robert DeNiro kicks the pavement when it's supposed to be his enemies head. But Scorsese-Fighting isn't a thing, right? For Star Wars, lightsabers are important. They are on the cover of every DVD, on every poster, in every trailer. And for A New Hope, spectacle was something that attracted people to the story and characters. And ESB has some major improvements over ANH when it comes to lightsaber fighting.

  • I still think the most visually impressive duels come from the sequels. Even how Rey and Kylo fight are really interesting to watch. The Throne Room fight is probably the best example of this. Rey fights like a Sith, with wild, passionate swings, over-reaching and overly violent, she barely keeps up with one guard at a time. Kylo fights more like a Jedi, he keeps an eye of Rey, his movements are more precise, he takes the time to collect himself before the guards engage again, which symbolizes how 'in one mind' he is compared to his first and last duels with Rey. Something I think Disney Star Wars does well is that the duels actually mean something. In the Prequels, and the Clone Wars, duels usually happened just because it looked cool, there were too many. All duels in the OT meant a dramatic shift in the tone and plot of the franchise, they were more character-driven. The ST does this quite well IMO, each duel changed how Rey and Kylo looked upon the universe. After the Starkiller base duel, Rey grew more confident in her abilities, while Kylo's 'mask' finally fell off. After The Throne Room fight, Rey finally stopped looking for answers in the past and focused on the present, and Kylo finally solidified his place in the darkness. The Crait duel is just perfection, Luke being able to fight Kylo and save the Resistance without even lifting his saber, the pure embodiment of what it means to be a Jedi. Kylo finally got closure with Luke. The duels in TROS are weird, they clash sabers multiple times in the film and each time Rey is becoming more and more violent and angry, lashing out in hatred, then finally realizing what she's done after she strikes him down. Remember when we all first saw The Phantom Menace and were in awe at Maul's dual sabre? That hype was always present when Kylo used his saber. I loved seeing how Kylo used that thing, how it matches his character's more brutal nature, and how it became more than just merch bait. Saying 'Is there still hope' for duels implies the newer duels are lacking in all aspects, which they aren't. The visuals and sounds of the Sequels are just phenomenal, while the sound of blades clashing in the originals is just painful. The environments for the duels in the OT never change, it's always just "Industrial looking corridor" or "big dark room"..

    @tTaseric@tTaseric3 жыл бұрын
    • Well, all the main duels in the prequels have a lot of story behind them. As for sequels, it's sad they did not use the potential of the actors who seemed clearly very enthusiastic. I'm pretty sure both Adam and Daisy would be happy to go through more training, which would have definitely resulted in more impressive looking fights. When I first saw Kylo's lightsaber, I couldn't stop thinking about how inconvenient it should be to use. Also, them giving the actors heavier sabers was a huge mistake.

Ben vs Vader has weight to it, but only with the other movies combined. yes, its pretty lame in its execution, but I let that pass, since they were old men(in that period of time). Its Kenobi fighting against his former apprentice again, and choosing to sacrifice his life, further embodying the soul of a Jedi and saving Luke and co. ep5, luke vs vader also has weight to it, since its very emotionally charged, with vader knowing Lukes identity while Luke knows not, him showing his superiority with him, testing the boy until he gets serious and cuts of his hand. ep. 6 has a full fledged Jedi knight Luke vs Vader, both testing each other out, while Luke tries to fight vader mentally more than his fighting spirit. in the end, his will wins over his brawls, which affect saver to turn to the light and redeem himself.

I don't want to completely write them off because that would be doing all the work put into them a disservice. I'm a huge fan of the lightsaber duels from the SWTOR cinematics, which takes inspiration from the PT duels. However, the fights from the ST still have some merit, especially the Ep. 9 duel between Rey and Kylo Ren. If anything, I think Disney and Lucasarts should've pushed the envelope further with their creativity, as so many new elements (force blocking) were introduced into the ST, but not utilized to their fullest extent.

Granted, this was likely chosen to give her a unique look and style. That said, why didn’t Lauren wield her sabers the same way that Ahsoka traditionally does? Was it for story reasons i.e. a tactical better match against Maul? Rosario Dawson’s choreography and performance felt clunky as she was engaging the fodder troops and only really used her backhanded grip at the end of the fight in the Mandalorian. What gives? Do soldiers/warriors really change their basic fighting style?

But also they would be sort of forgiven for not knowing some of the expanded universe stuff like Form 1 of lightsaber combat which was basically derived from normal sword fighting but was quickly adapted and further developed for the new weapon. Being that it is not a regular sword as one would know and the fact that the fights have unseen elements, IE - The Force itself aiding the fighters, of course it would look like you are swinging around a bat or something, and no, this isn't an attempt to justify the choreography done, but more to try and explain what the actors are trying to sell through these fights, it's an unfair comparison, apples to oranges, lightsabers are not swords but they HAD for a short time, similar concepts applied in the SW universe, until it was slowly becoming more developed as a weapon and its own martial art. Of course you would swing it differently to a sword, because it doesn't have a cutting edge, it cuts from either side it touches. But hey, then we have fights that think that if you hunch over when igniting the blades and actually swinging it like a bat would sell the idea of it being an energy sword xD I apologize for such a long read here but also appreciate those who do give two cents to what i mentioned here. Phantom Menace had style and was still focused and practical usually with a few embellishments for style. the force was used but didn't overshadow the swordplay.
