"wow you're still watching this? Okayyyy." Lol yeah man it's a well made video, we're still here.
Secret of Evermore is still one of my favorite games ever. I just love it, especially on a cold winter day cozy'd up inside for an afternoon or 2 or 3 and going through it. Great game.
Top tier ARPG for the system and the hit detection is better than in SoM. There's also a nice balance hack by ninakoru
Love the fact that u use ingredients rather than magic points for spells. This game is missing something, cant quite put my finger on it, but its a childhood fave
woah! EVO was like Spore 20 years before Spore!
There's a more complex version, made for the NEC PC-98. EVO: The Theory of Evolution
Sounds like you might be interested in Tokyo jungle
More like Spore was EVO 20 years after EVO
Only with fewer sentient penis monsters
It had multiple endings too one was human
Shadowrun was an incredible game!
I wish they leaned more heavily on the original theme song in the crowd funded "Shadowrun Returns" that cane out in 2013. I played that whole game only to finally hear that wicked tune played at during the last boss fight.
Shadowrun still holds up pretty well also.
Awesome game.
I remember many years ago having played Shadowrunn and at that time no sequal I rang Capcom in Japan but forgot about the time difference and got the early morning cleaners:(
Honestly all 3 that were commissioned were fantastic in their own way and definitely worth a play.
@SNES drunk You know, Secret of Mana has a gameplay improvement patch which allows you to assign spells to four hotkeys (A, B, X, and Y) which lets you cast spells in real-time without pausing the game. It's simply called the "gameplay improvement patch" if you're interested.
Dude if you ever run for Mayor, I'll definitely vote for you!
www.romhacking.net/forum/index.php?topic=20093.500 Here's a link to the patch btw, the patch fixes more than just the magic system, adding changes such as the inclusion of light and heavy attacks, longer range for bows, etc. Also yes, the man who made the patch (calls himself Zhade) is still working on it for improvements to this day, so try it out if you guys are interested. I personally cannot play SoM without Zhade's miracle of a patch anymore lol.
Or u can buy the remake.
@@Malouco lol buy that soulless 3D piece of crap? nah im good
Long live Romhacking.net!
12:54 "Unfortunately this one [SD3] never left Japan officially..." ...until now! Trials of Mana, both an official localized port of the original, and a remake in the works set for release next year.
Literally everyone knows
@@user-vi3tb3bw5t nice. Always one douche on a video who thinks they can flex. Trite, and bland.

Secret of Evermore is probably one of my favorite games on the SNES; it's just so unique and has such amazing zones, music, and gameplay.
THIS and the flee market is NOT a mess! Every fan loves this part. His take is very biased.
I certainly enjoyed SoE, but like Secret of Mana, I always reach a point where I just lose interest and my attention drifts to something else. Never finished either, despite best intentions.
For me, Secret Of Evermore is one of the best games on the SNES and of all time.
Evermore is probably my most replayed rpg ever. There's something so special about it. No other SNES game, or any game for that matter, has an atmosphere and sound design quite like the way evermore does it. The graphics and engine are really nice too. It feels faster and more refined over mana. The alchemy system is a lot more interesting too. They could have just gone with mp, but combining ingredients is way more interesting. And then there's the different currencies to use in different parts of the world. So many great ideas.
I loooove secret of evermore. I've replayed it so many times. It is quite extensive and original. Would love a sequel.
That dog was so bugged…
Evermore and Terranigma, I rate those two as the best action RPGs on the SNES. I also rate Illusion of Gaia ahead of Mana
@@OnSchoolyard but at least you're not tied to the dog with an invisible rope 'cough Mana cough'
Late to the party, but good to see Secret of Evermore getting some love. Yeah, it's a bit of a technical mess, but it's so unique!
I remember buying secret of evermore as I loved secret of mana, so I bought it at toys r us when it came out and fell in love! The art style is so dope
One thing i really appreciate about your videos is the way you cut to black at the end so the video links don't block the game-play footage, its a small thing, but it bugs me so much when other videos don't do it. Nice job.
That bugs me too
I have adblock setup to block those links as they are almost always annoying
Yea I don’t get why they do that
A lot of times they just blanketly put them on all of their videos when that feature launched a few years ago, so that's why they're completely out of place a lot of the time.

I am coming back to this review 4 years later and it is great
I can see you put a lot of work into this video, and it's one of the best and most informative you've done.
That's a nice thing to say, thank you for watching!
@@SNESdrunk honestly I've discovered a lot of gems thanks to you.
Secret of Evermore is still my favorite action RPG after all these years. The alchemy system, dog, soundtrack, and story all just blended together so well. I actually loved the flea market portion of the game and the occasional hiccups in hit detection didn't bother me much.
What people don't understand about the game is that the "bad hit detection" is actually your attack missing due to the enemy's evasion stat Hit and evasion are stats
I'm thankful for the thumbnail alone! I've been trying to remember the Brandish games for years!
SNES Shadowrun doesn't get enough love. Glad to see it included in this list!

@@SNESdrunk You do realize we will be needing more of these in the future now. Right?... lol Great video. As always.
There's another one posting tomorrow
The spellcasters in "Tales Of Phantasia" were surprisingly useful. A party of one physical fighter an three spellcasters for an extended amount of time is usually really awkward in a lot of RPGs, but in "Tales Of Phantasia" it works really well, and the spells are actually useful.
Seeing your channel and its content growing every week is a really great thing :) thanks again for all your reviews/drunk plays !
I really appreciate the recap of the better / more enjoyed games at the end :) Thanks for the vid!
Great video! Terranigma is my favorite SNES game hands down. It's also a game that I never would have found out about had it not been for the emulation scene. Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you for watching!
There's so many more great SNES games Japan held out on us Westerners, not just Secret of Mana's superior sequel.
Id also probably go with Terranigma as my favorite game on the snes or my favorite action rpg ive played at this point. The combat is just so satisfying ,the approach to story felt very unique, and the atmosphere is just so gripping more so than even modern games ive played with vastly more advanced graphics.
Terranigma is one of the best RPG's ever made. It was really ambitious at the time. I think this game didn't get too much attention because Chrono Trigger was released a few months before and Playstation was just released too. Square-Enix should consider a remaster or at least a port.
Pretty sure the killer for Terranigma was that it was never released in america and it wasnt released in Europe until december 1996 which is about13 months after its original Japanese release and after the N64 had come out.
Thanks Drunk, the effort you put into this video has definitely payed off. Good job.
Thank you for watching!
damn, dude. I was actually blown away after watching this. There are so many good games on SNES that doesn't get recognized well. Everyone's fav Secret of Mana is just a potato if compared to the other games, lol.
Wow, quite an exemplary and thorough amount of games reviewed here. Many of these I have been curious about. Thanks!
Really glad you had included Shadowrun, with another brief mention at the end. Watching a friend play that game back when it had come out, really woke me up to ideas and thoughts on other games that may be different. So with that, it opened me up to random PSOne and PS2 purchases later down the line. While games like Final Fantasy VI (3 in NA) and Super Mario RPG opened me up to RPGs in general, games such as Shadowrun taught me to seek out games that indeed were a little to VERY different. I help contribute it to my wide range of personal tastes in genre and games themselves. Including some terrible games I know are really bad games, but ones that I personally love and enjoy playing.
Star ocean is seriously amazing. Anyone who haven't played it missed out
Played End of Time on PS2 that was a huge game
I played the PSP remake and didn't really like it.
Great video man, I discovered several new games to try out thanks to your quick review of each of them. Keep up the good work!
I love coming to your channel because every other video I discover a new game to love. This channel rocks!
> "wow you're still watching this?" I felt that.
You have, by far, the best intro on KZhead. It always gives me a smile and a giggle!
This was truly awesome, such a great collection, a couple of which I had never heard of!
Great video! I've been looking everywhere for action RPG and you conveniently have them all here. I had to favorite this video for future reference.
Thanks for watching!
Looking at the description. You played ALL of these, wow this is going to be an interesting video, thanks for taking the time to play all of these and bring attention to them, I'm not familiar with some of them.
Thank you for watching!
Yeah, I can't really think of games to compare them to, haven't played evo, but Choas seed is really worth playing if you're into that kind of game, it's really well made for what it is, it just takes a substantial time commitment, to learn everything and finish it, the tutorial alone takes about half an hour. It's addicting once you get into it.
This is the Best video of RPG action ever and Forever, thanks snes drunk!!
Thanks for breaking down the differences in RPGs. Layin' down the knowledge. We love all your sterff. Keep it up and have a good rest of your thanksgiving!
This is one of the best reco videos I've ever seen. So many gems... Thank you.
I'm never gonna get tired of hearing "Into the thick of it" from Secret of Mana, Such a beautiful and magical track.
I tried out Chaos Seed after seeing it in this video. Wow, I think this is the most I've enjoyed a video game. Awesome sprite work, awesome gameplay, awesome role playing elements and story, probably the best 16bit top down action. I hate replaying levels, but on this game going back and getting alternate endings is just as fun as playing it the first time. The translation by d&d has alot of character keeps my laughing through the cutscenes. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Thanks!
It had a SAGA Saturn version. Which is even better, more balanced but only had Japanese version
whoa!!! this.. is absolute awesomeness at a point of an RPG lovers view.. such a wonderful bucketlist of games to try and experience! thanks for this kind sir!
You got my thumbs up the second I saw Brain Lord so early. My personal favorite and I love pretty much all of these! Well done sir.
Secret of Evermore, Illusion of Gaia, & Brain Lord were the first RPGs I ever played & I love those games. Star Ocean & Tales of Phantasia are definitely some of the best RPGs on the SNES
I honestly cant remember my first rpg. But if i had to put money on the line, id probably say FF3 (or ff6 because they decided to name them weirdly over in the west) But that said, Evermore, Gaia, and Brain Lord are hands down my most favorite action rpgs. I even have the final bug lair thing in brain lord mapped out in excell somewhere on my pc XD
Thank you for your hard work, this video was great. My favorite one was Shadowrun, it has a lot of replay value, for the time.
Thank you for watching!
This is my new favorite channel! I've been telling myself for yonks I gotta get into SNES RPG's so this will be my reference fosho!!!
Great video, sir. How nostalgic I feel after watching these games.Awesome!!!
This was one of the best. Thanks!
Thank you for watching!
For sure.
You're the reason I checked out Brain Lord and I absolutely loved that game! Looks like you just introduced me to another couple of games that may becomes favourites of mine [Alcahest & Front Mission Gun Hazard]
Enjoy
Been watching your videos for a little over two years and I as a SNES fanatic your channel is the best. I always seem to agree with you 98% of the time and this video proves it. Also, enjoy how you tell everyone to enjoy the rest of their day (or Thanksgiving in this case).
Thank you! This gives me a lot of new games to check out.
Neat list, lots of titles I hadn't heard of. Chaos Seed and Front Mission look worth a play.
Alcahest is slept on. Great game with an awesome soundtrack.
Really nice video showing some games I've not seen before, thanks.
Wow, watched the reviews for most of these but cutting them together is great. Thanks for that, hope you do more of these in between your regular stuff.

Nice video. Your channel is amazing for discovering 16 bit videogames. I really like your videos.
Thank you for watching!
This list is SO useful for me. Thanks a lot!
Awesome list, thank you. I hadn't heard of a couple of these that seem to be worth checking out.
I loved the story in Illusion of Gaia; that game had me mesmerized as a kid.
Nice, now I know what to add to my collection. Thanks, SNES Drunk!
Thank you for watching!
I always love to hear about Illusion of Gaia. It was one of my favorite games growing up, and one detail you glossed over was the incredible music. Maybe it's because I was very young playing it, but many of the flute tunes and the ruin music still give me chills.
Amazing video I discover a lot of action RPG here. Thanks for sharing this knowledge.
This showed up randomly in my suggested videos, and I'm impressed enough with your content that I wanted to comment. Your summaries, gameplay footage, use of words, and vocal tone were all excellent and I'm excited to see your other videos based on the quality of this one. Your biggest flaw is probably that you didn't enjoy Secret of Evermore's market section XD
Thank you, this was a treat. And happy Thanksgiving
Thank you for watching!
What an amazing video! Wow! So much content and even some games that truly caught my eye!
Awesome video, watched the whole thing. Thanks.
LOVE Alcahest. Perfect for someone without a lot of time to play long games anymore. LOVE the OST
The graphics in Chaos Seed 😍
videos of chaos seed, gotta be one of the most gorgeous snes game I've ever seen
Awesome, this pops up as I'm in hakchi figuring out what to cut from my list. I love it
THIS IS JUST WHAT I NEEDED
Thank you for watching!
I always loves Secret of Evermore. There is just something about it. It's a flawed game with a steep difficulty curve, but once you get used to it, it's totally worth it. It's a very unique experience and I personally like it more than Secret of Manna.
Great summation of these games!
Great video. I found some of my favorite games on here. :) Also some of these games I never even knew about, I will check them out for sure!
Great video!
Thank you for watching!
I am always surprised that you are so "negative" /meh on Illusion of Time/Gaia, it has such a unique mood and the soundtrack is amazing, and the final boss fight is so cool/ your 3rd form in general. I loved that game so much.
One of the best games on snes
I played through the quintet trilogy for the first time last year and Illusion of Gaia ended up being my least favourite of the three, I don’t know what it is but I feel like some of its cutscenes and story moments dragged on forever, don’t get me wrong though I think it’s a good game and I still enjoyed it.
I think it's a classic, but the English translation _is_ really, really, REALLY bad.
@@ArcaneAzmadi I only played the German version. :) Been a few years since I last replayed it but I always thought they did a good enough job on that one.
@CybersheII ^^ that's how I feel about Soul Blazer, I can't stand the combat and gameplay, the soundtrack or the story. I love Terranigma the most. Illusion of time is a close second though. The swapping of characters, the extremely cool and mysterious soundtrack. It's just pure love for me.
this is a gem of a video thank you so much
Thanks for all the great vids homie
Shadowrun was a real treat on the SNES. Such a unique and pleasant experience, which seems to be in short supply these days.
The Sega Genesis version is also really good. It's totally different than the SNES version but it's very open-world before open-world games became a thing.
Good Lord man! I better get something to drink! This may take a while!!
Really well produced video. Just finished Secret of Mana and your vid came up on the sidebar.
I liked the way Secret of Mana paused the game for the magic system. It made it possible to spam spells as well as give you a moment to strategize.
11:32 I loved Secret of Evermore as a child. I thought it was great that they made a western version of Secret of Mana. There is a ROM hack to enable 2 player with the dog.
hope one day we will have a rom hack that fixes the level design of the dungeons 0_0
Happy Thanksgiving SNES Drunk. 🍻 Cheers!

Thank you for presenting Terranigma in such a good way! My favorite classic game of all time!
hey great video thank you for doing it, learned about a few new famicom games
I wish 2D Actiong RPGs would make a comeback. I love them.

OMG! Pliz devs STOP doing Metroidvanias and start doing Action RPGS pliiiiiz!
Sadly, we don't have thanksgiving where i come from. But thank you for the wishes nonetheless. And thank you for your recommendation
Thank you for watching!
I just started playing front mission: gun hazard. It's a really stellar game. I'm amazed how well the story and the gameplay complented each other nicely. It feels like i'm playing a mecha anime or an action movie. However it's pretty grindy for me. A bit too much perhaps. I'm pretty much stuck at the helicopter mission in borukta (borkuta?) atm. Would you perhaps have some advice for me on that mission?
I played Brainlord. Great game honestly and loved having two critters following you around doing different things.
Just stumbled over your channel. Really enjoyed this, keep up the good work man.
Action RPGs is my favorite genre. And SNES my "all time" favorite console. So this topic is a no-brainer for me.
Seriously. I owned almost all of these SNES games lol
@@uglyfxxx6981 cool!
@JulianRock Secret of Evermore and Mana and Zelda obviously (not saying that the other games aren't as great as well !)
I fully agree with your assessment of "Action Rpgs" As for Zelda and the other games listed, they are considered action-adventure (Zelda) and platforming (Mystical Ninja) games by their creators. The defining difference in an RPG is a numeric leveling and experience growth system, while adventure games are usually defined by inventory and puzzle solving. The only Zelda which is an RPG is Zelda 2, since it has an xp growh system.
Yeah, I feel like a lot of people forget about what an adventure game is at its core. But at the same time, I still feel strange about Legend of Zelda since it still feels RPG-like even knowing it shouldn't be considered one. A lot of adventure games wouldn't allow yourself to strengthen yourself so much and leave it on the optional side. I also wonder whether a game like Devil May Cry or God of War is considered an action RPG since I felt like they were.
@@sigurdtheblue Linear games with little to no exploration, instead of having a big interconnected world, you just clear the stages one after another, no real inventory system, no towns, no quests, yet you can "level up" so to speak. When you put it that way, Zelda seems like more of an RPG than DMC or GOW despite the lack of leveling. There's also Chrono Cross, which works exactly like Zelda, no experience points. You simply get a regular increase after defeating each boss, but I've never heard anyone claim Chrono Cross isn't an RPG.
@@kekeke8988 DMC and GOW are hack-and-slash. Action-adventure games have exploration elements.
