I remember the first time you tube suggested this song to me...I was in my third year of uni, with soo many books scattered around me and I was trying to find quotes for my dissertation and this song just spoke to me: 'need to grow, have to push'...'I dig for the one then I open the hunt, it's taking all day from the back to the front'. @@D__03 i like to believe its both... she is diggin through records during her process to get inspired when creating, writing, which was my first incline also, but it could be, at the same time the lyrics beeing metaphor on the relationship level.. or maybe its as simple as Madison cupcake said in the first place...
I understand the lyrics like this: It's written from a man's perspective. He can't/doesn't want to get too involved with his new girlfriend, because he's emotionally unavailable as his heart is really in collecting records, so he spends all his time and energy on looking for records, and his "friends" are all record collectors as well, so they meet and talk about records and go out looking for records together, then trade records with each other, always hoping to find that one elusive record, in the right condition, that would F-I-N-A-L-L-Y make him content, but of course that never happens. So it's a song that doesn't paint record collectors in a very positive light. I used to be a record collector myself, although I wasn't emotionally unavailable towards the women I was dating, but if I understand the lyrics correctly they are very accurate. The obsession with records was also killing me, so I was glad to get out of collecting. And of course several people disowned me when I gave it up. On average men are more interested in things and systems than people compared to women, so the people who are the most obsessed about things tend to be all men. So if a woman, who is a typical woman, and whose priorities are people, love and relationships, gets involved with a very thing-oriented guy she will be disappointed, as he's more interested in things than in her.
