  • in my system we have an elbow we call 'collapsing elbow' where you either strike and connect, or strike and miss/blocked and you allow the striking hand to 'collapse' into an elbow strike. can be a little tough to time it, but if it works its a big surprise to the opponent, and it then allows you to get in close for better elbow strikes.

  • Ellbows are awesome. You can use them from guards and follow up with hammerfists or grabs. Moreover, they (and hammerfists) are much safer than punches. I learned it the hard way when I saw a boxing bag and tried various strikes without gloves. PS: if you want to know which hurt the least: 8) finger jabs 7) leopard fist 6) hooks 5) punches 4) slaps 3) palmstrikes and forearmsstrikes (either inside our outside) 2) hammerfist 1) ellbow strikes

      @jaymiddleton1782@jaymiddleton17825 жыл бұрын
    • @@jaymiddleton1782 When I punched for the first time, it felt the same LOL. I had to be really careful with 6-8... Only with 4-1 I could go full force. People laugh at slaps, but when you realise that you can hit a lot harder like this, it doesn't feel like being a pussy any more... Regarding punches, I got much better at hitting the bag hard, but it still hurts after a few strikes and I still can't do it full force. On the other hand, I can unhook a medium sized bag with a forearmsstrike (similar to a livershot hook, but hitting with the inside of my forearm). Still, I guess that I'd break my arm, if I hit someone on the skull like this.

      @edi9892@edi98925 жыл бұрын
    • There is still a definite risk of breaking your hand using a hammer fist if u strike a hard target. This is precisely what happened to my sparring partner. Also with finger jabs u could easily hurt your fingers. I always hit a punching bag with no gloves. This is for self defense, it’s not a sport. And yeah, with an uppercut u need a certain kind of bag

  • Nice tip: when throwing an elbow, make sure your thumb knuckle is pointing at the floor and not at you (in other word, your backhand faces you and not the sky). This will naturally make the bone part of the elbow more out, which you will use to inflict more damage. The rotation used to reach that position can also increase the damage.

  • Another great part of elbows is that if you MISS in a mount position with a fist you hit the ground and break a hand or wrist potentially. Same in a standing shot if they're against a wall. An elbow is sharp, extremely powerful, and when folded it naturally guards the joint.

    @rfross771@rfross7713 жыл бұрын
  • Check how Master Wong does it [catching fist with elbow]: I know he is good friend of yours, as came to your club one time. But notice he DOESN'T chase the fist: but works more like a COVER. Take upper-gate, for example: he can either punch straight or coming from the side. So for straight, you just place elbow in front of the eye. For side: it's more at 45° angle.

    @Devi_Shammuramat@Devi_Shammuramat5 жыл бұрын
  • Also, elbows are tough to defend against. Mostly, because of their short range and close proximity, and less telegraphing of the movement. People are always looking for the punch, so in a way it is a surprise attack in terms of a strike.

  • I completely agree about elbows. Especially about the fact that you probably won't be able to catch a fist with the elbows. But I also watched a video from master Wong where he claims opposite. I didn't agree with that, so and you do.

I am kind of you by accident and math design. they say don't just block you will run out of luck...I do the inverse thing. don't just keep trying to hit me in the head because I am all out wong defense cover that head elbows forward keep wiggling...he will run out of luck because he may hit me in the arms a lot a the face a little but he will run out of luck and hit that elbow and I will try to catch the other hand, and if i do hill billy hand trap he has one hand hurt and I am yanking the other one around so he is off balance while I strike him...I am adding this to my tools,, love the chant "hands feet elbows head" I love to have songs and chants in my head when I am in trouble to get in the moment..there is one school of knife defense that says control the weapon at all costs knife or gun control the weapon at all cost..I got it down to "never let go" over and over in my mind..I may grab a hand and try to twist it invent new joint locks and just keep on twisting screaming never let go if a guy about 60 kilos and fast ever got caught in my grip. this screaming is loud 100 decibles and maniacal laughter...I can not even feel a guy hitting me when I get pumped full of hate and rage, I even feed on it.what ever I lack in proper training I got in full on Adrenalin and pure mental illness...I think I project so much hate it makes opponents sick to face me...I swear to god when my girl friends husband dies and I and get the money to come there we can swap skills...if you think you should charge me I will buy some lessons I am a good sport..I would love to come and see if the class can feel me, and if anybody wants to swap lessons I would trade with any student...I know a lot about mind control...I will never never never die, you have to kill me, and while you are killing me I will fight hard, i got one chance in all the universe to go to the shaolin temple.NEVER LET GO of my shaolin monk delusion while I am being killed.

  • Well done, good information. The chum kiu and biu gee forms get those elbow strikes in. It is quite interesting that staying relaxed and just turning your body and hip then allows the elbow to swing. If you do a hook punch but let the arm fold it becomes elbow strike. I like how you blend BJJ with Wing Chun, it is a good mix.

  • I've seen a video of two russian, drunk guys fighting over a very dumb thig essentially, but as they're fighting, one of them takes down the other to the ground, and then, the guy that's being grabbed starts to elbow the other guy... ON THE THROAT! And he does this like 15 times before the spectators stop him, and this is where he realizes that he just took the guy's life, by repeatedly striking him in the throat with full power, non-stop elbow hits.

  • Again, a great video, thank you so much for your insight. And always thumbs pointing down (you forgot to mention it) with elbow kicks so the impact happens with the bone and not the muscle, which you do naturally. However, I would rather put my front leg and foot outside (3:35) as the opponent can easily sweep it away with his front leg and make me fall. The position would also give me better control as I will still be in front of him, which won't be the case for him. But again, that is just theoretical, if you push and hit as he says, fast and strong and precise (it all comes to this eventually), it will work :) Keep up with the good work! Cheers from France

  • Yes, by doing that, he can't knee you in the groin! If you drop the back leg two inches, it pushes the knee forward, locking it into place. It's called FORWARD INTENT in wing chun and is one of the ten concepts. Remember not to lean forward or backward, but keep a straight up and down position so your structure stays solid.

    • Respectfully disagree. One of the many reasons I left my Wing-Chun teacher. Nothing is static in a street fight. If you stay static, you will get starched! You'll never see any winning boxer stand straight, ever. Not even the Russians. You generate all your power from the crouch. Also, in a real fight, if you stand straight, you can't move as effectively. Your attacker may punch you, but he may simply use his mass to tackle/grab/grapple with you. You absolutely don not want to be "straight up" if that happens, because you'll end up face up & lights out on your ass on the ground with brain damage.

    • @@davejohnson-yi2rk You don't know too much about wing chun, do you? How long did you practice and what teacher did you have? No, we don't stay static, which means we don't just stand there. We enter in after making initial contact. Again, if we use angled footwork, with a body rotation towards the attack to be able to see it coming, and we are on the outside of his attacking arm and close enough that the can't tackle us because we have control of the arm and leg through trapping. Again, you know very little about wing chun. You don't need to generate power through the crouch. That doesn't work well in wing chun. We generate power through joint alignment, the elbow behind the fist, a slight body rotation and forward momentum, which allows us to produce amazing power in less than one foot, which a boxer could never do.

    • @@WhatsTheTakeaway Thank you! But you have to remember, this only happens in the traditional system. The modified doesn't have the proper footwork or know how to enter in properly (except, of course, in the Wong Shun Leung system, which is the best-modified system and the exception.).

  • Interesting that MMA guys rarely dispute your stuff. "Wing Chun not practical in a street fight" - baloney!

  • So good! So many positive points, and I know you guys truly understand, but in teaching you missed the mark. Don't glorify elbows. It doesn't matter how good your elbow game is the attacker got through your kicking and punching range.

  • Yes. Most of the time the other guys are just ordinary people. And it is so stupid when you have people who think they are so smart and asked/said, can these teachers fight against MMA . But what to do. Like the saying, all brawl but no brains.
