On March 30th, 2023 we witnessed several families of orcas attempting to predated on two adult grey whales. Killer whales are typically observed predating on grey whale calves during the months of April and May as they're make their annual migration back up to the Chukchi Sea of Alaska. The orcas were observed for 6 hours by several boats before giving up and letting the grey whales escape into shallow waters.

  • a lot of people commenting saying the orca's are protecting their bellies by rolling, i truly dont think thats the case i think they are rolling to protect their fins, orcas have a track record of biting the fins off sharks and whales, we can see at 4:04 the left orca try bite/headbut the left whales fin im certain the whales want nothing more other than to swim away but in order to swim they would have to extend their fins and risk them being chomped on at 6:40 you can see a bite on a unfolded fin and at 6:45 you see how folding the fin helps

    • They are not actually protecting their bellies when you see them constantly belly-up or upside down, they are doing that to be able to see better where the next Orca ram attack is coming from so they can roll to deflect the oncomming blow, making it a glancing blow instead of a full impact ram. The Orcas aren't typically interested in any part of the Grey Whales except their tounge usually...which you will see Orcas constantly try to bite right out of the whales mouth once they are so exhausted they don't even attempt to run away any longer. I live on Vancouver Island and the Grey Whales migrate past us every year trying to dodge the many Pods of Orcas waiting for them off our coast. They try to hug the coastline as close as possible so Orcas can't get below them in deep enough water or stay near Kelp Forests so the Orcas cant be able to ram attack them from below. Many Greys like to take a short cut and cross Monteray Bay instead of hug the coastline and right here is usually what happens if you take the short cut across the Bay as the Orcas wait and listen for Greys and their calfs to do this

    • The orcas are most definitely capable of rolling them over in a pod of that size, but more likely, the grey whales are rolling to protecting their blowholes and to slap their pectoral fins and flukes, to ward off, hit, and frighten the attackers. Orcas don't ram repeatedly (especially not two massive grey whales) because trauma could severe a key artery in their nasal passage and other structures can be injured (this is how Kandu died at Sea World). The Orcas strategy on larger prey is to disorient, drown, "kick" with their flutes, and bite. This was a huge endeavor by 30 Orcas needing to feed their pod or starve.

In other attacks you can see this impact bend the Whale body or even lift it right out of the water. Rolling is a strategy used by several Whales and seems instinctive as very young calves do it.

    • This channel has no qualms about showing how brutal nature can be and definitely show the endings when they end in death too. It's the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Their job is literally to do research and not interfere. If they say the whales escaped, I'm sure they did.

    • @@lktzu2821 Nope. Killer whales (and dolphins generally) have weak jaws and teeth that are vulnerable to infection. This is why they beat up their prey before eating it.

    @tori7495@tori749510 ай бұрын
    • They survived but later on when they are old and weak they will be eaten alive piece by piece. Happens to almost all animals actually. Do you think many deer check out in a retirement home or go peacefully to sleep under a tree? It's unlikely. They will be scented out by predators and literally eaten alive. Nature has always approved of predation and death. No death, no energy flow. No energy flow, no life.

  • Spectacular footage but seems very inefficient as an 'attack' by 30 orca!? Looked more like harrassing and haranguing, scarcely any biting and no concerted efforts to drown the whale which they had targeted? Was this an inexperienced assault? Its certainly fascinating but not what I expected having watched many such films.
