Namibia's Nama seek recognition of Hornkranz Massacre as genocide | DW News
In Namibia, Herero and Nama communities have been commemorating the 120 years since the genocide of their forefathers by colonial forces.
They held a memorial procession in the town of Luderitz, in what's now an annual ceremony. In 2021, Germany's government apologized for the killings, which made up the first genocide of the 20th century, as German soldiers wiped out tens of thousands of Herero and Nama people. But these brutal events were not the first of their kind by the Germans.
Over a decade earlier - on April 12, 18-93 - colonial troops attacked a Nama settlement and killed dozens of residents. Today, Nama descendants want the Hornkranz Massacre, as it's known, recognized as the first genocide against their forefathers.

it's respectable than a german news channel is speaking about this
We learned about it in school, 7th grade, just before ww1. Its not like nobody knows about it or someones trying to hide that, like the common practice is in world society to not own up to genocides. I mean they happen everywhere. Still today. We should talk much more about that.
@@geddinixan255 But it took Germany a century to recognise its genocide.
Finally Dueche exposed, they have tried 99ways to hide it. anyway its came out. I remember Once AJ had brought this out.

@@geddinixan255 She's not talking about what you learn in school, but about the first time it happen, at the end of the 19 century.
Respect for DW for recognizing It

When will the world remember the Genocide of Igbos, before and during the Nigeria-Biafran war, aided and supported by Britain, Russia, Egypt, UN & OAU.
There is also Yemen and Gaza. Humans are weird
Gaza is not a genocide. Hamas, endorsed by the palestinians, is emphatically terrorist, brutal and inhumane.
Congrats DW, I didn’t know you could report on other global conflicts besides Palestine
"genocide is a proses not an event..."
and we are currently in a "process" but no one can call it by its name.
This is one event of many that happened to the Herero and Nama communities. It is estimated that between 24,000 and 100,000 Hereros and 10,000 Nama were killed in the genocide over 4-years (1904-1908).
@@BimRen246 you know African nations fight also each other right? , they don't ask for money for that :))
@@BimRen246 I am very sad to hear this..

Asking for recognition, or even reparations from Germany, is fairly justified. But asking that from the whole of Europe? Nama massacre might very well be the first genocide of the 20th century. Rusyn genocide, noted for its first usage of concentration camps in Europe, is the first one to happen in WW1. To this day, it hasn't been recognized by Austria or Hungary, the two countries which share the burden in its perpetration. How justified is it to ask reparations of people who've likewise faced colonization and genocide (or, for that matter, whose ancestors didn't perpetrate either one)?
These comments trying to minimize what happened- what is wrong with you?
I'm only criticizing that this article suggests that this topic isnt discussed and there was no effort made yet by germany for compensation. Thats simply not true. And the timing is implying that we cant talk about genocides happening today in this second as we chat. Its just sad seeing it happening over and over again.
Maybe you can learn to RECOGNIZE a genocide when you see it. Apparently not because...Gaza, right?
Are they asking for South Africa's reparations as well?
No justice no peace
Did you know the defeated people must pay the winners compensation even if you defend yourself. So fight by anymeans.
Yeah, so I wouldn’t say that Russia visit to Namibia one month ago has nothing to do with this ridiculous demand.
Thanks for pointing out that coincidence, it didnt pop into my newsfeed so didn’t know/hear.
Anyway I’m sure it’s just a total coincidence like October 7th being putins birthday.. nothing to see here, move along folks! 🤔🫣🤣
What on earth is wrong with you? Am a Namibian and there was no Putin... Pay our people, you exploited them.
Something is wrong with your head to connect Russia with that.
And now 🇩🇪 is helping 🇮🇱 create another one in the 21st century. 🇩🇪 always on the wrong side of history.
There are five times more Palestinians alive today than than in 1970, kinda weak genocide if you ask me.
"Genocide," just like the word "racist," has very quickly become the most used word that the bulk of users have no idea as to its meaning.
So go ahead and enlighten us and tell us what it means. It should be a very interesting explanation considering "Between 1904 and 1908, more than 80% of the Herero population and 50% of the Nama population of Namibia were killed by German soldiers."
@K...O....quake.. This, in case it has escaped you, is social media. Not university challenge. One is sure that your mother is calling you to go clean your room... It doesn't take much intelligence to copy and paste from Wikipedia...
@@K...O....quake..under legal definitions I think you’d be able to kill 90% of a group and it not qualify as genocide as odd as that sounds ngl (Not saying it should ever be done just under legal definitions theoretically it could occur, idk enough about this case to say if it was or isn’t one) Aware that there are genocides that aren’t legally classified as them especially ones that the Russian, Chinese and American governments have committed.
Lol divert topic bec you can't clarify your original comment🤡

human shields
78 of them women and children. Imagine now 15.000 children. Oh, right, we don't talk about that.
That’s called an unfortunate strike on Hamas where Hamas specifically uses human shields without a second thought and blamed Israel. Elections have consequences
78 women were killed in one day. It isn't the only day the Germans murdered our people on a mass scale but it happened over a very long time, to a point that we are now a minority tribe in our own country. Both the Palestinian and Nama/Herero losses are atrocities and one should not be perseved as "less than".
Its just frustrating as someone who is socialized in modern germany that we can debate whole day about what our ancestors did wrong but we dont talk about what goes wrong today. Like how can we let this happen? Does nobody see the patterns? Why we learn about this in school and this article acts like it was something hidden? Its like we are allowed to remember but not to learn its just sad. May the courts bring justice. And if its a hundred years or so later.
How many Hamas members have been killed?
What’s not talked about is the Israeli children murderd by the Palestinians oct7
The way the battle was presented in the video makes it look and sound like the men ran and hid behind the women and children of the settlement … and also didn’t come to try to rescue them after the saw the Germans entering the settlement and starting their operation. hopefully that was not what actually happened
Thinking exactly that. Do you go behind the person you try to protect just hoping your enemy has decency? Risky move, if you ask me.
@@Flickvids100well, it was the Nama assuming humanity where there was none. It's easy to judge by our lens, where we know men can be soulless and you must trust no appearances. Harder to do that when all you and your ancestors have encountered are other humans.

I can't help but wonder how many German veterans of this particular atrocity went on to become members of the National Socialist German Workers Party. That would make for an interesting research paper. And a quite sobering one!
See you failed school
And it is happening now in Palastine and the world is turning a blind eye. Down with racism and apartheid
It is? There is a campaign to exterminate an entire ethnic group there?
the Palestinian Genocide is ongoing.. the Rwanda Genocide was ongoing.. but i think all wars triggered by geopolitics and natural ressources must be considered genocides.. listen what Netanyahu just said on TV: "the International Criminal Court has no authority over the state of Israel". it's his very words recorded on 30 april 2024. then the same day, the stunning answer of Vedant Patel, US State Department deputy spokesperson: "we do not believe that the ICC has juristriction over this issue". there, everything has been said. this resumes the entire history of modern justice.
There are five times more Palestinians alive today than than in 1970, kinda weak genocide if you ask me.
We throw the term genocide around way too lightly. Tragic loss of life does not equate to genocide. You disrespect the victims of actual genocide when you call every instance of a large amount of people getting killed a “genocide”
When we can't talk about the 21st century we live in, let's talk about the 20th!
