An Industrial Restoration of a VERY Worn Out Dresser...
Check out my clothing shop! modernmade.shop/
----------
A vintage dresser is restored and given a new rustic industrial look, featuring a restoration of antique cast iron castors.
When I found this dresser on FB Marketplace, I noticed that it was entirely solid wood. No MDF, no particle board, all 100% solid. Whenever I run across a piece like this, my first thought is to restore it and bring out the wood hiding underneath. Since all the black stained surfaces were solid, sanding through the stain and minor scratches wouldn't be an issue. However, there were some major cracks along the top and sides. When I plan on painting, this isn't a problem since the cracks can be patched up with some Bondo and painted over to hide the damage. For a restoration, it's much more difficult to repair major damages AND hide it. My solution was to first use wood epoxy to match the wood color as much as possible, and then go with a rustic look by creating wormholes and other marks of character all around the dresser. Doing this effectively camouflaged whatever major damages that were fixed, and I love the dark accents that they created once the dark wax was applied.
I hope you found some value in this video, and thank you for watching! :)

I'm very happy that you kept it a natural finish. I'm not really crazy about the worm holes, etc'. I think that the wood had so much character on its own and had survived unblemished. I do like the castors and handles to bring it up to a steampunk aesthetic. Good work!
yeah the damage they did for sure rubbed me the wrong way.i had to downvote honestly
yeah I agree. Beautiful progress but adding fake damage for a more... rustic look I guess?? Seems wasteful. Enough damaged dressers exist as is haha
@@Aleph-Noll you downvote because something's not your style? That's sad.
in a way I agree because it was sad to see intentional damage on the wood. On the other hand, it's just a different method of antiquing.
@@lavero1810 what other reason is there to downvote?
I can't decide which I love most - your clever videography or your vision & talent for transforming a piece of furniture into something grand and unique. Bravo!
Thank you very much! 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Another beautiful piece lurking under years of neglect! I’m impressed not only with your skills, but with your design sense. Everything about this finished piece is just right. 🌟
Exactly!
Thank you!! 🙏🏻❤️
Thank you for not playing back ground music. I like the real sounds of the work going on. Great job.
You were right with "trust the process". It pained me to see you putting all the holes and marks on it, but it turned out great at the end. The castors are a good match with the hardware and it made it original. Great job.
I’m surprised you had to pay as much as 70 dollars for it as it was really worn. I would have left enough overhang on the back of the top to cover the width of an average baseboard. That way you could stand it next to the wall and not risk losing small items behind it. A great makeover though.
Ookh Yes that would have been nice!
Maybe it was 70$ bc. they already know he lives there and can make shit to gold!! 😁
I think $70 is quite a deal for that piece. It's really worn but it seems to be all wood and not some laminate or veneer so the quality could be higher..? I don't know for sure tho but it could be a reason
Initially it might seem expensive but I was browsing for furniture the other day and people want ridiculous amounts of money for their old junk.
@@royer_redos Yes. It's bc. of the personal attachement to one's personal belongings. Thus people overestimate the value of their things. This phenomenon even has a certain name in psychology. Sth. like "attachement theory" or so..
Beautifully updated!
It looks fabulous and I love the wax effect on it. I’m not sold on the artificial woodworm holes mind. If it had survived that long without it my personal feeling is that it could manage without it for good. However, it doesn’t spoil it and the wheels and handles are a perfect choice to set it off. Who would have thought such an ugly duckling could turn into a beautiful swan?
Agreed. I wouldn't have chosen the fake distressing but that's just me.
I agree.
100% Agree with that. He is extremely talented and does a good job restoring furniture but I had to fast forward the distressing and worm holes the wood looked so beautiful and then nail holes nope can’t watch that part but in the end yes it was beautiful but could have look more beautiful in my opinion.
@@emilydoesit8383 yes totally x
Love it!! Those castors are awesome and cleaned up beautifully. Using the WD-40, to protect from rust, is just like what I learned from my grandmother regarding caring for a cast iron skillet. They have to be “seasoned” with oil to protect from rust and keep food from sticking. If maintained properly, they’ll last for decades. Bravo, another beautiful transformation!💜
Thank you for sharing that :) 🙏🏻❤️
Oh god, I had to read this again to realize you didnt mean that you put wd-40 on your cast iron skillet. I was super worried 😂
I wasn't sure about the wormholes at first, but you had the vision! The final product was gorgeous! I would not have guessed it was the same dresser! Beautifully done!
Amazing job! It hurt me when you were creating more damage on the wood, but I understand the intention. You are a great furniture designer and you clearly had a vision. You created a wonderful piece. I can't wait for your next video
For the videographer: I love the rust and vinegar cocktail with the sound of heavy machinery backing up as the casters were lifted out of the liquid. Fabulous! If I had brought this piece of furniture to you for restoration, I would have been appalled at the number of permanent changes you were making from the outset. However, having seen your previous work, I would have waited patiently for this beautiful gem to appear. You even did a great job with fake distressing! Oh my! You are such an artist! It's perfect.
I love how you save all of your extra pieces. Beautiful restoration.
I really love your channel. The respect you have for the history of this furniture is unrivaled. I'm so proud of you and I don't even know you. These videos are so soothing. Thank you for what you've shared with us all.
*Love .. Love .. Love .. Every Pc You Create* These Video's have to be time consuming. I am *So Appreciative* you take the time to Create Them .. ❤ .. *Thank you*
Thank you!! ❤️
I love that you used wax to give it color. I Love it.
That is great work and some new techniques I have not seen - you seem to have many skills and tricks in your "toolbox". Here is one from mine - use hair dryer or heat gun to heat up the sticky liner before removing. It will remove much more easily.
Thank you for that! 🙏🏻
That is awesome! Probably one of my favourites. The old caster wheels and the wormholes..perfect!
Thank you!! ❤️
I'm binge watching Modern Makeovers at the moment. Your physical and artistic skills have been rightly praised by thousands of viewers, but I must add, perhaps rather strangely, that your command of the English language, your grammar and punctuation is faultless! For me, it adds to the absolute pleasure of watching your videos. You put as much thought and effort into your post-editing as you do in your makeovers. I taught English and to see it used correctly is very pleasing indeed!
Thank you so much 😊
You sir have vision. Very masculine and it would compliment any bachelors home. Well done 👍🏼
Perfect combination of the hardware and castors.
This is gorgeous
You understood that this piece need character. Well done
You make me miss my woodshop days.
Ive never seen the wax application as you did, and the nail and screw teqnique for a steampunk worn look was clever. I Really like the end result. Great work!
Thank you very much! :)
One of the best channels on KZhead
I love this piece! Amazing
I totally like the dresser, because it is very clear to me that the quirks in the wood were made intentionally, and not to make it look artificially old, but as artistic freedom. That's why it's a work of art for me!
Gorgeous. Would make a great island
That does look amazing. I was a bit worried when you started distressing the surface, but it ended up great!
your vision for each piece you do is so so good
It looks outstanding. And you are wright - these 'wholes' give it special vibe
I loved the result, except for the battle scars! I have to say I deeply admire all the skills you showed here, and how you brought an incredible piece back to life. The castors were such an amazing match, I love it! I want one just like that for my home ❤️
You don't know that but your videos helps me a lot when I'm anxious, thank you so much 🥺🙏
Beyond up cycling. Creative at another level
Gods, I love it so so so much! Esp the wormholes, gives it such a bare and enduring feel. It’s so homey for my lifestyle
That turned out beautiful
Wow! Amazing skills both with the editing and the dresser. Thanks for the enjoyable video
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Best video editing ever. Love this piece. congratulations
Thank you for turning down the sound when running tools. ❤
You nailed it!! The final result is just so good Andy. Never heard it before but the wax finish on a natural wood is so beautiful!
The best part is the smooth feel on the wood once the wax is buffed and cured 😃
Love watching your makeovers. You're incredibly talented with your craft.
Thank you very much 😄🙏🏻
I was skeptical about this one but I was so wrong! End result is perfection!
I love the look of this piece. It is fashionable and elegant. You are good.
Love the finish. I've got a tall 6 drawer dresser that is very similar starting condition to yours. The external drawer treads need some attention though. I had to remove the tiny wheels and I may replace them with the large castors. Im so excited for warm weather so I can get started
Warm weather cannot come fast enough.. good luck with your project!
That turned out amazing :)
I love watching your content. I'm learning heaps on how to do the job and to keep the workshop
The best furniture is the piece you put elbow grease into. 3 yrs ago I bought a big tv and converted a six drawer dresser into a media center with tons of storage for all the goodies.
Wow. Such a difference. Love the castors. Love the new handles. Great job.
Thank you so much :)
WoooooooW! A million dollar one of a kind piece now!! ✨✨✨
I agree with V bee completely! What a gorgeous design and restore. Amazing.
Genius! I loved every minute. Thank you for taking us along!
Loved every second of this video…as always
Wow what a beautiful transformation! Well done. I appreciate your hardware consideration to match those wonderful castors and the distressed and waxed finish just pulls this piece into an awesome piece. It's always been a pleasure to watch your work. Much blessings.
Thank you so much :) ❤️
Excellent restoration friend, look's really good, have a nice day !!!/
You too :)
Lol, I am glad to see someone else who saves even little pieces of wood, I even save all my shavings and sawdust from different types of wood. A nice well-done piece of work.
I'm always excited when u post. You're in a league of your own.
Thank you!! 😁😁
flawless yet again sir
😃🙏🏻🙏🏻
Oh my stars! Love the editing, process and final result.
I love how it turned out!!
You are incredibly skilled! Congratulations!
Another beautiful piece!
I thought you were crazy for making all those holes at first but it turned out so lovely!!
The trimmed down and elevated body help feature the spiffed up finish. Great hardware gives one more punch of style. Nicely done Andy.🌷🌷
Superb - carefully chosen piece of furniture, creative vision, great documentation and a fab final outcome. Thanks.
You said exactly what I thought about him, and his work :))

ONE OF MY FAV furniture makeovers so far. You are extremely skilled and have got fabulous taste! 😘
love love love it.😍😍😍😍😍
WOW!!! GORGEOUS!!!!
I love the distressing you did on this, wormholes and all. All that character! The transformation on this was wonderful.
Awesome job! Appreciate that you don’t add the annoying music everyone else does.
That turned out fabulous!!!! Great video and job!
Great job. So modern in its “industrialness”!
Wow. Fabulous transformation. Love this. ❤️
Great transformation! It's a more gorgeous piece now!

Beautiful, I would put this in my livingroom
Wow. Your videos are my favorite thing on KZhead. You make things so beautiful.
Absolutely gorgeous. Classy and timeless. WOW!
Awesome, you have given me ideas for my own dresser 👍
Great job
Luv your videos and editing. Excellent. However I really thought the ‘backing up’ warning added to you removing the wheels from the vinegar was very clever and fun. As always, great finished work.
😁😁🙏🏻
Your choice of handles is perfect with the big beefy casters. Very nice work, it’s a really nice look.
this is my comfort youtube channel. got commissions to do? modern makeovers is on in the background. absolutely bored to death? let’s watch this guy rub a dresser with various materials. love this dude.
Wow. That looks fantastic.
