The Fighting Game That Just Can't Catch A Break - Skullgirls
Skullgirls is a 2D fighting game initially developed by Reverge Labs and published by Autumn Games in 2012 for the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade.
Featuring tag team-based combat and a unique art style, the game quickly developed a passionate community with grassroots efforts building up its esports scene. However, as a competitive title, Skullgirls has seen its fair share of ups and downs, never quite having the big break its player base had hoped for.
Join us in today's video as we take a deep dive into the world of competitive Skullgirls.

Skullgirls is the most talked about fighting game no one plays.
I played it like two weeks ago.. Just like Marvel vs Capcom 3 I forgot how good it was..
It’s great but you can’t really recommend it that often
i only really play it if a friend comes over, which is not often, specially with the current situation
Fighting game require alot of stuff to keep on playing time dedication practice a good ping opponent etc so yeah... ;/ people dont play it often cuz they get destroyed
Melty Blood Fixed that for you.
yeah, disemboweling your opponents in a fighting game is cool, but what about playing as a 5000 lb jazz master pure-brass musician or 287 lb wolf made of folded steel and raw sex appeal?

Gotta love The Boys of Skullgirls
I still can't get over the fact that Big Band uses kick pedals for his kicks. It's so gloriously dumb.
The fact that every single frame of the characters’ animations were hand drawn is amazing. I can’t believe it was all done without pay
Your dealing with TRUE game designers here. We need more like this.
Another thing is that the developers are not greedy. They actually gave their game engine to another Indie studio for free. That Indie studio was Mane 6 who used it to makes Them's fighting Herds.
Sometimes, people just want to do things for fun.
As of today anyone who owned skullgirls but none of its dlc gets their game upgraded free of charge. Thats 4 characters, voiced cutscenes and more free of charge. If thats not passion for the craft I dont know what is.
Those were the days. When all of the fighting games were hand drawn. I'm still at awe everytime I look at KOF 13
I like how every character in Skullgirls has at least 2 big design traits to pull from so the jokes/animations/tropes don't get old. If Squigly was JUST a cute zombie, it'd get old cuz we've seen it before, but she's also a singer and has a dragon that can attack with her, so she has suprisingly amazing variety. Ms. Fortune isn't JUST Frankenstein's monster, she's a pun-loving cat Frankenstein monster. Cerebella has a muscle hat AND is a trapeze artist, etc. etc. I think it's smart design to combine tropes together in order to create something unique with them
Big band is a tank kind of person that is a detective. But hes not just ANY detective, hes a big detective that is literally a breathing, walking instrument.
Ms Fortune is definitely my favourite. She is an undead, a catgirl, Schrödinger's cat, a thief, a gang member, she has good puns and her body is mutated. Purrfect!
@Memorable Man To quote Skullgirl Marie herself, he is a “giant tuba man”
And big band is big and a ba- oh
Ms Fortune is literally a walking pun herself, as not only does her name sound like "Misfortune", but she's also (to my knowledge) based on the idea of Schrödinger's cat
I'll say this about Skullgirls. The characters have the most personality Ive seen with their combos.
I love Big Band making quick talk about his instruments as he whacks you with them, and Filia and Squigly calling their parasite's names too
@@LucarioredLR That wresleter dude is my favorite really. Him using his chair for combos is hillarious
Yeah I really like looking at there “Personalities”
Why the first sentence.. It's completely redundant
@@yocelestia people usually say "I'll say this" about things they want to keep brief, or aren't comfortable talking about
The one thing no one talks about is that the narrator collabed with a hentai artist to advertise the game.
Oh right zone, that parody is really well done lmao
Squigly Zone skin nyes
I mean said hentai artist was one of the animators for the game.
Fillia was it?

If you're watching now, Skullgirls has gotten a new dev team comprised of the old team minus Mike Z, and they are releasing a season pass with the first character, Annie, being available in Beta now.
Plus, Skullgirls has finally reached the EVO stage, albeit online.
Yes very pog
I like to look at skullgirls as the game that refuses to die. It has been dealt such a truly awful hand, and should have fallen apart on numerous occasions. But seemingly through sheer force of will, the people behind it just keep it barely afloat. This isn't like Melee, that just seems incapable of dying, and it's honestly pretty admirable how much passion has gone into this game.
@@Crawver Agreed. If Melee had the support of Nintendo, it would soar to the skies. But as we all know, Nintendo would kill it and everyone playing if they could. Melee's biggest threat is its creator. For Skullgirls, it's more a case of TERRIBLE luck and controversy. Yet it still keeps kicking thanks to its devs.

I remember playing the mobile version and wanted to play the actual version and i never knew this is a game where the developers didn’t get paid for a year, imagine how much more popular this game would’ve been if they we’re paid
Imagine how much popularity it could have won if if was released last year, just like Cuphead, a really good game with passionate and talented people working on it spending as much as they need to spend just for finish their beloved game, and then winning the love of the fans making it way more popular with that lovely development story.
You can easily get skullgirls for around $1 on sites like Fanatical on a good sale.
What is interesting is that there was 2 mobile versions, one was really shitty and the other is the fighting gacha we actually have. Even so the game is balanced af and the only fighting game that is playable on mobile as even dropping tons of cash you can't whale.
@@GaaraUzumakiGaara whats whale
Funny thing is, that mobile game is DOPE. They easily could have changed the mechanics to make it a popular online RPG rather than the gacha/mobile style. As someone who sucks at fighting games, the mobile game is my actual preference. Hands down, the best mobile game I ever played.
"skullgirls is great for beginners" Me joining online for 4 seconds: **obliterated** edit after two years: Yeah, the matchmaking for online versus sucks because you could be placed against someone with a higher skill level than you. fighting games just aren't that popular. only the major franchises can barely maintain a sufficient player base for online matchmaking. the rest take about 3 weeks to become completely dead games. they have automatic matchmaking and ranking ladders but there's no point because you can't find a match without arranging it on a community discord.
The devs are just so talented. The mobile version doesn't lose its charm or Polish. It Able to take the basic of the original and add things to make it fit the mobile app. Any Time I have lil extra money I donate to them
It was very nice of Autumn Games to allow LabZero to overlook and help Hidden Variable Studio when it came to work on the mobile game. because of all that a new character for the mobile game is being made and if it sells really well that character MIGHT make it over to the main game.

Yeah no they arent. Their first season pass litterally costs more money than the base game for way less characters, the moment things started to get better as far as popularity goes, the company turned hyper greedy. Hell the mobile game litterally is not just a gatcha fighter, but actively replaces bad systems with worse systems (the pvp system that acts similarly to the attack defence style of starwars heroes went from giving you multiple chances with a larger board making it more likely to actually earn some points to a one loss and your out system) at this point it feels like dead by daylight. It's beginner friendly if you don't play online. It has *the* best tutorials that I've seen in a fighting game and they got rid of infinites; however, people can still kill you in two combos while you're trying to figure out how to play the neutral online. The skill gap between new players and long-time fans is enormous, and there's not really rank-based matchmaking. If you don't mind a month or so of completely one-sided ass-whoopings while you try to catch up, you can consider it beginner friendly as well... I guess. I didn't have the commitment to break through that skill floor.
*fighting game players:* The technical depth and complexity of Skullgirls has a lot going for it. For one, you need to learn 14 different characters, each with their own personality, motives, moveset and appearance, and pick which ones you'd like to practice. Secondly, all characters with their own moveset have unique combos that not only feel great to execute but pack a big punch when taking on your enemy. It breaks my heart to hear about all the shit Lab0 had to go through. For a developer to work UNPAID on their passion project for a year is kind of unprecedented in AAA, and I've honestly never seen a project with that level of commitment and love in it save for maybe Witcher III. Skullgirls was made by actual players. You can see it in the games features and as a fighting games enthusiast, the training mode is honestly exemplary. The only thing I have to go to wikis for is combos, which basically no other fighting game can claim. The moves are visceral and satisfying, the characters are flawed and sympathetic, the gameplay is deep and layered while also being accessible and friendly to learn, and the community is pretty good. Honestly, I think the thing that cements my love for this game is the fact that MikeZ, one of the people on the SG team, is a regular at tournaments. That and the fact that they added SonicFox, arguably the best player in the world, as a background NPC in the classroom map. This isn't a gesture made out of some sort of dlc pandering or a desire for money from the community, it's out of respect for their best players and the supportive people who kept the game alive through trial and tribulation. God bless, Lab Zero. It pains me to see such a passionate developer suffer from harsh circumstances, but you've made a game that will remain in the favourites of tons of people regardless of the new titles coming out with better graphics or more fighters simply because this game outdoes them with heart. Finally, if this video gets anyone interested, the games community is STILL alive through a bunch of discord servers and matchmaking. If you want to start playing, the game is definitely alive.

tf2: what is an update, but a miserable pile of bug fixes. But enough talk, have the entire leaked code!
*Akshon Esports:* Although we may not know what is in store for Skullgirls future.... *Annie of the stars:* WE DO NOW!
I got this game a few days ago, and so far I'm loving it.
I LOVE everything about Skullgirls. The characters, the art direction, the music, the "characters". Too bad I'm only good at platform fighters
Lol same, anything that's not smash, I'm mediocre at best

I didn't know Skullgirls was so old. I remember hearing about it 4 or so years ago. It seems like a cool game with nice art
The amount of love the developers put into SG is astonishing, theh even worked on it without being paid. They knew they'd get somewhere.
I remember seeing and playing a bit of skullgirls back then at someone's house and really liking it when i was younger. Then about 2 years ago someone was doing a give away for 2 copies of skullgirls and my best friend won. The second person who won never claimed it so he gave it to me since i was the next one. Me and my best friend love playing skullgirls and she is really good at it despite not playing much fighting games before. I'm proud of how far they have gotten and know they will get even better. This game deserves the recognition it deserves
This is the one game everyone says can be played online with the same feel as offline, heck, a few days ago they patched the netcode for improvements when it already feels perfect
You forgot to mention the Juju drama and the red cross censorship.
Wait, when did that stuff happen?!
@@SnazzJaz kzhead.info/sun/fKijXdyLqV-pm6s/bejne.html This video explain it in details.
@@SnazzJaz The Juju drama was a real shame cuz Juju sketch looks pretty good. Plus, I believe the devs will never add fan stuff in the game again. due to the greed of a particular fan.
@@SnazzJaz As for the red cross censorship, I have more details than the video. Big evil company Johnson & Johnson sued the Red Cross of America due the red cross emblem. Imagine suing a charitable humanitarian organization for profitable gains. It just shows that big corporations would kill for profit. Back to Skull Girls, They changed as a precaution (as mentioned in the video). I know that the game "60 seconds" also change the red cross in the aid kit to a green cross. I guess more games were affected by it. It's not a big deal changing a color, but it's a shame that devs have to do it just because a greedy CEO wants easy cash.

small update: still aint catching a break
I love skullgirls and their scene. Glad you guys made a video about such a nice game!
**2020 happens** Game companies: Oh no we have to improve online now. **2020 happens again** Game companies: Nevermind.
I love Skullgirls with a passion, it's been going on for nearly a decade in concept designs and it's starting era, the amount of effort put into each girl is amazing, as someone with like 700 hours on it, I wish it had more people playing in lobbies and not online matches
Now more than ever especially today. Edit: We just got another break. This game will never die.
What happened?
@@lindthechaoticheretic8708 Annie happened.
@@ashtongiertz8728 Only in mobile, from what I've heard. I really hope someone will correct me on that.
@@draco4569 nope, coming to 2nd encore too from what ive seen.

My brother loves the game, not because of the girls, because it's finally another combat game he gets to play and experience.
And... I'm going to assume, your 'brother' is the CIA?
I've met and tabled next to Alex at a few comic/toy conventions and remember him telling me he was greatly inspired by Darkstalkers/Nightwarriors which has a much more cartoony feel than the Marvel vs Capcom series. They really combined the MvC system and top Capcom animation beautifully into their own magnificent creation. Great video!
They even offered themselves to develop a Darkstalkers sequel, dude. But you know... Capcom...
As someone who has played Skullgirls for 5 years now and has remained the only fighting game i've played consistently for years and even being one of my top 5 favorite games of all time. i'm happy to see people spreading the word about it wherever and whenever, this game deserves love, and you sir did a great thing by making this video
“We may not now whats in store for the future of Skullgirls.” Annie gets announced
I've been playing Skullgirls for years now and it's by far my favorite fighting game
Wait... Mariel Cartwright (5:57) is the girl that fixes the stage during Beowulf's entrance! That's cool that those little personal nods are in there.
Dont worry man. Its had its final big break now
Sadly. Darn the new team
Yes...
Skullgirls is one of the most creative design in the characters I've seen for a while now.
This game is kinda like league "Started as a mess, now a global phenomenon"
SG is amazing but Global phenomenon is sort of an overestimation.
Its not a "Global phenomenon"
Another interesting thing to add is how esports player SonicFox was added into the game to replace one of the NPCs (though she does also appear in his place on occasions) The problem being is that he's a very divisive figure, especially since he was caught rooting for someone assaulting a woman.
people also think he does not deserve the spot, those spots were mostly for people who donated a fuckton of money to their crowdfunding campaigns, where was he then? and why does he deserve a spot just because hes famous and plays it? if he supported the game initially it would be fine and nobody would care, but coming with an update after years just to add this guy....
I love the characters in skullgirls so damn much. It’s a treat watching the battles. Just the animations alone, Beowulf’s backpedal animation, Peacock’s references, Cerabella’s HUMONGOUS _arms..._
Honestly, I got skullgirls for thicc gorlees and büff bois I stayed for the amazing game play, animation, music, (literally everything tbh)
and recently it finally was on EVO after DLC being confirmed
Doesn't help that one of the guys in evo pretty openly hates games like this. Also Konami because of course Konami.
What guy?
Dude you might wanna reconsider Konami because they were already in a lawsuit at the time and it is arguably for the better for that

I like how it's 2 months later and the company that made the game just shut down. Lab Zero truly has a curse on it... And even then, Skullgirls has it easy. Autumn Games is there to pick up the baton and keep this project alive, hopefully free of the dreadful "cure of the Z". Indivisible is now in the hands of 505, who cut off support basically at release. I don't think we're getting any of the DLC...
I thought the thumbnail was a mix of Dark pit and Blake Belladonna.
And the character's personality is the complete opposite lol
Also just wanted to say, Skullgirls Mobile is great! c: I’m pretty bad at fighting games and even if I love them, I’m still bad. So the mobile game which is more RPG based, is really fun!
I'm a sucker for hand drawn stylistic animation and cel-shaded graphics, so Skullgirls caught my eye the first time it was introduced. Shame I never got to play it, but I'm glad it's still alive even now. A passion Project needs more oomph than a regular funded one. Looking forward to playing it as soon as I can get my hands on it.
Good game exists. Konami: I took that personally...
It really does suck what happened with EVO but I was so hyped for skullgirls to be on that stage and for more people to see just why we love this game.
I remember finding out about this game in 2016, and here we are with Annie dropping soon, more dlc Characters on the way. Glad to see this game still making it by
Legends say the release party is still going.
I picked up skull girls recently and was blown away by how GOOD it was. Great looking game with extremely fun gameplay and full of personality.
When I saw skull girls the style reminded me of Shante
Filia has a Shantae inspired alt
One of these days, I really need to get into this game proper. A friend of mine gifted it to me on Steam several years ago and it just sat in my library for a long time, until I decided to just give it a shot at one point. Going through its tutorials was probably the very first time I made a genuine attempt at learning the basics of a fighting game--I actually felt kinda proud of myself at the time. Unfortunately, I just never kept that pace up afterward and kinda fell off. But that's just me--I get discouraged easily and I often move on to something else when that happens. I admit I'm really intimidated by fighting games in general. They seem like they require way more concentration and ongoing commitment than any other genre I've encountered. I admire people who are truly passionate about them.
Man, with recent events this video hits differently. Just puts into perspective how much the community backed this game and fought tooth and nail to get a glimmer of well-deserved recognition in the fighting scene, in the middle of a global crisis. And now, those same backers have been stolen from and betrayed by a new team of "devs". A modern tragedy.
What happened recently then?
