  • I’m a little surprised that no one was sufficiently on the ball to point out that what is seeping to the surface at the “tar pits” is not true tar, but asphalt. Of course, that makes it about the least problematic thing to be bubbling up on an asphalt-paved street. Obviously, the city roads department will want to clean up the excess, but it’s not a contaminant that will erode or degrade the pavement.

  • I saw a show once where that very same area erupted into a big lava-spewing volcano and hot lava started flowing down Wilshire setting things on fire and people running screaming. So they should be careful.

  • I would guess that some sort of vent tubes can be placed there to capture the methane and additional tubes to give the tar a place to go. You'd think they would have done this years ago to mitigate the seepage before building a city around a tar pit.

    • So, I found the answer to this. They do have pits underground to catch this stuff and it can be pumped out when full, but heavy rains caused it to overflow into the streets and they pumped it out to mitigate this issue. Still, I would think they shouldn't have built a city right on top of this.

    • It's part of the "Salt Lake Oil Field". It's under most of West L.A. and Hollywood. Also, it's actually asphalt and not tar, but that's just semantics to most people. There are also big fields in Huntington Beach and Brea California. I remember when I was a kid, there were hundreds of pumps all pumping it out everywhere in Southern California. I also remember playing with a cousin up near Calabasas and sliding into a brook that I thought was water that was actually oil naturally coming up. Imagine your kid coming home covered in oil, lol!
