Is the Arc the best Leatherman Multitool? Comparing to Wave, Charge, & other tools with
The multi tool and every EDC community is abuzz over the brand new @LeathermanToolGroup Arc. This review will compare it to many of their other tools including the Charge + TTi, the Surge, the old wave, the Juice, the Micra, the OHT, the Free P4, and more. Even an old Gerber multitool shows up. The Arc is Leathermans newest tool featuring all one handed external opening tools and the Free magnet technology. It has a blade featuring the magical supersteel known as Magnacut. Also Pete joins me from Cedric and Ada Outdoors to do some serious edge retentions tests on the new Magnacut blade. Does it stack up?

Best review of Arc. Love your dry humor!😅. Lot's of common sense on this review! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just wish they would allow full tool customization. I imagine that each slot has a number of compatible tools that fit, & you could just pick which tools you want. That would be worth a significant up charge to me.
I’m mostly happy with the toolset here. I was really happy with the waves. The serrated and awl are either two tools I can live without
Everyone would love that. That's probably why they won't though. We'd all buy the tool we wanted and not buy anything else, lol. I'd probably take the Free P2 and throw the Arc's blade, small screwdriver, and regular driver bit holder in there.
Agreed!
The beautiful, if unholy, offspring of the Arc and a GOAT multitool.
Best suggestion I have heard of so far. 12 out of ten points ;)
"you're stupid if you're putting a Leatherman in a safe" hot take of the century
Ya mines on my belt .. EDC
Lol. Not wrong though.
Well I guess can do the math on how many he has. And the value of them. Adds up quick. If these all got stolen by some punk running through the garage or house. I think he would be pretty upset. So a safe isn’t a bad idea for him. Just saying. A lot of money in multi tools in this video.
Ahh...Good review, thanks! Glad to see you in your element & flair discussing multitools! Pete from Cedric & Ada had mentioned that you had done one at the beginning of his own review of the Arc...
A multitool review from my favorite sarcastic reviewer?!?!?! IM IN!!
how are you doing a very comprehensive product breakdown and comparison while simultaneously doing successful standup comedy seemingly totally off the cuff? instant-subscribe!
First Leatherman and I love it. Great tools on it, and the magnet system is great. Also really into the look of it. Fun to fiddle with and flip open and closed too.
Just found this channel and I love it. Great content, snarky, informative, and entertaining.
Welcome aboard!
Best review of the Arc I have seen. Love the open & hidden sarcasms. I have two Leatherman (the Wingman & now the Arc) and two Victorinox (The Champ & the Swiss Tool). Love all of them, but I do think that the blade of the Arc is a true improvement. I just love how hard I can use it, and it just keeps cutting & cutting. It is just very frustrating with all my other multitools to use the blade and have to resharpen it after some use. Not with the Arc. Magnacut is really amazing in that respect. Most of the other points you made, I totally agree.
The background in film makes so much sense. Youre just too good at this, and now I understand that its because you actually know what youre doing 😂 Seriously though, great review. Comprehensive and critical. Ive definitely got my eye on the Arc as a fan of the classic Wave
Love the collabs between my favorite knife tubers. Very scientific indeed. I'm taking notes.
That has the most indepth review on Leatherman that I've ever set through.
Love the cameo. Great vid, and informative.
TBH I come for the witty student loan banter and stay for the sick ass leatherman tricks.
I bought the Arc and I absolutely love this thing! Been looking to replace my Charge+
This is the only knife channel my wife will watch. She doesn't give a damn about the knife facts and evaluations. She just likes the humor. Oh yeah, before I forget, good review of the Arc. Stickin with my Wave.
That’s a good choice! No need to upgrade!
I've carried a Leatherman tool since 1990. If I lose the one I have I feel naked and replace it within a few days. That said, I'm not spending a shit-ton of money on any multi-tool. My current Leatherman is a Rebar, and that works just fine for me. I've pretty much done every repair or whatever with a Leatherman except for pulling a tooth or amputating a limb, but, hopefully, someday (as long as the tooth or limb is not one of my own).
Dude, you’re the best KZheadr! Been watching since the Noctigon Meteor days. If all else fails, you could do stand up at the clubs.
Been waiting for this. Thanks Advanced Knife Bro. Your the only source of knife news that remains trustworthy in these crazy times.
This is very good content, and almost as good as the beer reviews. I will look forward to more of those which are DEFINITELY coming. In the meantime, I'll rewatch the Hopslam video for the 10th time to hold me over.
I own two Leatherman Tools the Super Tool 200 and Micra. The ARC is the only one I have seen that tempts me. Great review, thank you.
You reminded me to look at getting a new Leatherman, dang good tools.
"the magnet technology of magnets" got me. You get 1 thumbs up click for that one.
Thanks for the video!
I went to my grandmas cause her electric recliner and walker were both busted. My 1995 PST saved the day.. did everything and made me look super handy. I can't even imagine a Wave or ARC, those must be the same just funner. And yes, funner is a word.
Pete sent me. So I subscribed here. I agree with YOUR assessment. For that kind of money you can buy a nice box pf tools and a (cheap) Benchmade. I have a PST, Signal, Wave+ and most of the Juice series.
I'm excited for mine. I use a wave+ as my EDC and light around the house stuff. I use a supertool 300 and Milwaukee Fastback for at work in a manufacturing facility around metal and chemicals. Have quite a few others, Free P2, Free T2, Bond, and Rebar, on top of the ST300 and Wave+. I loved the Free P2 as a ecosystem but the tools just didn't fit me very well. The ARC fits me perfect for carrying outside of my job.
Love your channel. Use your index finger to open scissors and saw. Natural, easy, and you still look as cool as you can look with a multi-tool in your hand.
Great video, I kinda want to get one just for the flipping action. Looks fun.
It’s the crossover I never knew I needed!
I had a PST back in the 90s. Currently have a Bond. It's all I need.
Pete is one of the crown jewels of youtube whether you're a knife guy or not. My wife likes his nerdy JRPG music and I like his funny nonsense and solid takes.
Nobody cares what your wife likes about him.
Wave and gerber are my favorites. Actually have the original large leatherman. It's been well used since the early 90s. My best friend gave it to me. I restored the serrated blade a few years ago.
I totally agree about the original wave being the best multitool. I actually found mine a few years ago at work and asked around for the owner and never found them so I kept it, I carried it to the point that I started just having to have one on me all the time. I even thought I lost it at one point so I orderd the wave plus, and like the Arc it has the changeable bits, I honestly don't like those, especially the eyeglass bit holder. They're too small and the holder doesn't keep them in well. The original wave is still their best ever imo.
Looks like an excellent multi-tool. AAA+++REVIEW! GREAT COMMUNICATION!!
MIGHT WATCH AGAIN!!!!
As always an entertaining vid. Love the clip with CedricAda, he is a mad scientist but a cool ocker.! Where would the Arc be without the magna steel.? Untill next time be safe, be cool & stay true.
Love the old school AKB photos! Man you were AKB from the start.
Hands down the best review on KZhead and I saw them awl. Expect for that one banana’s…
I've had several Leatherman tools over the last 40 years. I keep upgrading a little. I liked all of them except one feature. Every one of them would not hold an edge on the knife blades. I had been a professional wood Carver for about 24 years and I know how to sharpen a blade.
I went back to watch your video again, I just missed you mentioning about the super tool . Good video though 👍
I'm waiting for the Surge Ti
Best arc review yet. Take it from me, a loser that's watched way too many arc reviews.
I'm in the I have specific/specialized tools for specific tasks camp. But for my multitool usage I keep a couple sets of DeWalkie or MilWalt around that are comfortable and strong/sharp enough to be functional. Hell, being bright yellow/red helps me find em if dropped or in a hunk toolbox. That said. When it comes to my single blades. I go for higher quality.
I was thinking of getting a Signal for going camping, and it just because I liked the look of the green and black variant, but I like the look of the Arc even more. 😙 And since I don’t really need these for work, I can let aesthetics play a much large role in my decision making. 😆
I have many multi tool i like the signal a lot for outdoor stuff
I do home physical therapy and I use my wave+, bit kit and ratchet extender several times every week. I got tired of asking 80 - 90 year olds if they had tools to fix little things. Love me my leatherman!
From one content creator to another i really enjoyed your video
I've loved my Charge + TTI for years, and being left handed, I end up using the cutting hook probably way more than most (most accessible cutting function for left hand for opening plastic packaging, cutting zip ties, etc.). It looks like the saw and scissors are what you say are left hand primary tools - how uncomfortable is it to open the knife blade with left hand?
honestly considering this as my upgrade but idk if i can ditch my schrade multitool with full size scissors , like why just why tiny scissors on multitools especially ones with a locking knife , only things i want are full size scissors, locking knife still , good pliers , i like the centre drives bit setup, and a file/pry bar and then maybe made out of some good material like this one and boom done . no need for bottle/can openers when everything can open a bottle and if ur dying and need a can open u can ugga dugga it open 😂
2nd viewing. Still the best knife content on earth!!!
“It has a god damn awl though” 😂 love it
Somebody, somewhere, said "AKB, you can't spend a minute and 8 seconds explaining 'these tools are hard to open one handed'" and you said "hold my beer." I admire that.
Personal i feel that the rebar is the perfect "modern" PST it was my first Leatherman and i carried it from when i was like 16-19ish at some point i got a rev sidekick wave and supertool the supertool and rebar are the only ones i find myself carrying anymore I did have a multiforce wave copy that i carried for a year until i snapped it in two and never bother to replace it Awl is damn neay useless for its intended role unless you have that funky folded triangle one some of the victotonox knives have like the alox electrician it actually makes near perfect holes amolst as if they were done by a drill
Nice and funny video. Great review as well. I got a Surge and I always miss either the file or saw. This one has both, I am having doubt to buy it. Dont use the serated blade on my surge.
I'm still using the super tool 200! Instead of making stuff like this they really need to bring back the juice xe6, all the tools I use but a lot more compact, I would carry the super tool more but its basically a small brick. I bought my mom one of those Gerber truss multi tools and she uses it around the house and for garden projects, the only thing I don't like about it is how hard the little locking mechanisms are to get a fingernail on to disengage them.
My personal favorite Muti Tool is the Leatherman Surge simply for how over built it is with a slightly larger more robust blade. For the Surge the Wave and many other multi tools you can find an aftermarket blade in sv30 or even Damascus if that's what you want I do wish some company would make them out of sv90.
Isn't this guy from Cedric & Ada ?
He IS Cedric and Ada !
lol
Due to your self depreciating intro, I subscribed out of pity. Also I contest that the Surge is the best Leatherman tool prior to the Arc, simply due to its durability and reliability versus the Wave. Been a Wave owner since 99', and I retiredc using my Wave tools simply because they weren't as tough when compared to the Surge.
Please don't ever stop being hilarious.
The back of the saw of my Wave has cut my hand twice while the whole thing was fully closed. I filed it round now.
Good video as ever mate
My super too has the nice low profile sheath and a good selection of tools tbe only downside is the tools are loose in it
I prefer your rambling to others. Great video. For the other side large tools try opening them using your right hand middle finger so you don't have to flip it or change hands.
Surprised there was no batoning. I can understand why. Happy Thanksgiving Advanced Knife Bro !!!
I thought about doing it but I had already shot other stuff and it would have made the video longer. I think I spent about 25 hours on this video
In the last decade have edc wave, wave+ and surge+. Surge+ win's hand down. Add a sidekick and a Juice and that's the collection - still have an early 2000's gerber kicking around somewhere one of the one where the pliers slide out the front. Now if they just put a S30 blade on the surge+ it would be complete.
I bought the ARC mainly because it had a Magnacut blade and I kinda regret it. I immediately noticed I needed to sharpen/hone it a bunch. I tested it against my Charge TTI+ on two very big cardboard boxes and I neeeded to strop the magnacut blade 5 times and zero times on the s30v. The blade shape on the charge seems like a better slicer and the nub on the ARC can get in the way. I think they went conservative on the heat treat an negated using magnacut. I do like the usable cap lifter and beefier small bit. I thought the larger scissors would be better at cutting but I was wrong. I like have the serrated blade an hook on the charge for cutting rope. I like the awl used it on belt so far but don't know why they left out the hole for sewing, doesn't seem to take away anything to have it. I like that the ARC has a hard spot for hammering but it is awkward for everything I've tried it for so far.
“But it is awkward for everything I used it for so far” refers to the hammer function, right? I’m really interested in the Arc, but the wait is making me consider the TTI+ or Surge. I like the magnets, and the ability to splay the tools out with a button. But the Charge has the ruler and gut hook, and a comparable blade steel (my guess is you got a bad individual one). Smaller scissors and no hammer though. It’s really hard to decide.
@@vgman94 I was referring to the hammer as awkward. The gap in the center means you have to offset your strike for a small object and the overall shape is hard to hit something in a corner where space is limited. The charge tti does have a gut hook and I like knife blade better on the tti. The surge is much bigger and heavier than the ARC or the charge, I never carry it. But the arc is bit longer folded but maybe just a little flatter compared to the charge and seems a bit lighter but they are so close it’s hard to tell. No ruler on the ARC. The charge tti small bit is pretty weak I’ve snapped a few bits and had to send it in to be fixed when I jammed a bit in and broke it off. The Arcs small bit is more robust and easier to see which way it fits in. For the Arc I really like how the tools can be used with out opening it up and they are easier to open with gloves but it’s design doesn’t feel as good in the hand. The magnets and detents are nice and it stays closed very well some Leathermans start to open in the pocket when they are broken in.
@@buck.99 I never heard of the but driver being weak on the Charge. That’s new to me. The hammer seems worse than I thought. They really seem even now, or TTI+ being better considering the ruler for my uses. Or maybe I should get a load of dedicated tools instead lol. Thank you for the detailed reply. It gave me a lot of important things to consider.
@@vgman94I have the Leatherman charge TTi and I love it, I don’t see why anyone would need a magnacut blade when s30v is simply perfect already.
@@vgman94I may be too late, but if not get the surge, it's still overall the best leatherman imo.
I bought a Fact Auto a week ago. I held off for a long time. I blame you. Thank you? Now to hold off on buying the crater blue Bailout, Full Immunity Auto, and like six other knives.
I enjoy my P4 free and use it almost everyday. I'd love the ARC but the upgrade cost may not be worth it for me this christmas.
Do they make a good sideways sheath for the ARC?
Thanks ferrrrrr Showin' ana Sharin' bro... Cool Abu combo , new dropshot rod? Bass? :)
It was like 60% off and I need some new freshwater stuff. Those were my only reasons.
@@AdvancedKnifeBro right on , wouldn't mind tryin one of them combos out ma' self..... Love Bass fishing , and the dropshot lolol.... all reservoirs 'round here (Central Cali) and them largies n spots seem to love a Margarita Mutilator FAT Roboworm on a dropshot..... I swear a tungsten weight makes a difference, lmfao , but we all know it don't! 🤣🤣🤣
I enjoyed the comments about film school preparing you for 25 years of brutal loan repayment and many dead end 8/hour jobs😂. Also pointing out the differences between the different characters in the multitool world (multiverse)
Cool review with adequate portion of humor.
I work retail at an outdoor store and I once made a joke to a customer about an awl being useless and his buddy felt very strongly about the awl and muttered under his breath like a child that it was a very useful tool. I was baffled
I am so hyped for the awl on the Arc!!
1:01 Oh damn, is that Mike in the center-right in the grey shirt?? I swear, it looks just like him. He worked in the Equipment Lab when *I* went to film school. Pretty cool guy.
Naw that’s Jared. I feel like the guy named Mike is on the right side of the frame.
Ah dang. Wild that your film school acquaintance looks exactly like my film school acquaintance. That might be an even funnier coincidence than if it was the same guy lol.
I believe Jared moved back to Illinois and went into finance. He may have done some PA work in NY for a few years if I remember correctly
Came here for a Leatherman review. Stayed and Sub for bro's humour 😂 9:30 im dead lmao 😂😂
Thank you very much for your content, pithy commentary and sardonic humor. You’re most entertaining and knowledgeable. Gotta say, that I would have preferred the serrated blade/hook cutter to the scissors. I’ve cut a lot of zip ties. I hardly ever used the scissors. For what do you frequently use the scissors? I’m curious as the “larger” scissors do not really have that much larger cutting surface (7/8“) than the Wave or Charge’s scissors (13/16”). I can’t see a 1/16” making that much a difference.
I’ve used the scissors for fingernails, paper, etc. for zip ties the serrated didn’t work for me. I don’t like the handles of the TTi a ton so I’ve stuck with my wave for years. So if the hook works best for this I wouldn’t know. For zip ties the point of the main blade works better than the blunt tip of the serrated to get under a zip tie. Or you can pinch the lock on the zip tie and twist with the pliers. So no I’d rather not use the serrated on the wave for zip ties. The Scissors have mostly a beefier neck- however I appreciate all the data points you used to trying to say you don’t like the scissors and missed the serrated for something I never used it for.
WoOoW pocket clips on multi-tools. I guess I can stay for another drink. Btw on my YT app you currently have 15k likes on a video with 500 views. You’ve ascended.
Doing the impossible
I found the real use for the awl. It’s a beer can top vent poker.
I love this channel!
I use the serrated blade the most for my HVAC job for cutting the jacketing and insulation of flexible duct and then the wire cutter to cut the steel band. For me the serrated blade is the most essential. If I'm carrying a blade out to dinner I like the Skeletool. I'm looking for a knife with a Lapis Lazuli handle as my next dressy carry knife.
I guess I didn't get to the part where you go over specialized tools. I'm that kind of guy.
Good video clear content
the discontinued (?) Leatherman juice s2 without the corkscrew is secretly Leathermans best pocket tool for it's useful set of tools and small but still usable size
You’ll always be S-tier in that knife shaped hole in my heart.
Un fun fact: If you want to EDC here in Aus and remain unmolested by the law, it better be in the context of a multi tool, *mate* . Blades under 10cm also get a pass, but you better have a good reason. That's why I _always_ carry a solid hunk of Parmigiano when I step out with my Tenacious.
Parmagiano? Pfffttt! It's Pecorino for me! 😂
the best Leatherman Skeletool is the best EDC tool out there. I wish they made a slightly bigger version though
My uncle collects Leatherman tools, and I feel like my brothers always get his extras.
I was the benefactor of this type of person. Dude gave me his crunch
I'm holding out for an Arc with black g10 handles to match all my other knives... lolz
I think building sets spreads the multi-tool sickness lots of people, I also bought my first leatherman (A leatherman wave) to built sets, sets for a haunted house. I’ve handled the Arc, and agree with your assessment although it feels more likely to pinch my finger meats when opening or closing than my G10 charge.
I guess the wave is better if you need to crank down. The arc if you’re a lighter user of the pliers. But yeah the arc is kind owie sometimes
I did say that Cold Steel sword video was the best video I've ever seen, nope, this is it
A wave with the scissors and the t slot of the surge in place of the saw and file is a much better tool. The original wave also had a really annoying habit of pinching the hell out of your hand if you slip off a bolt when using the pliers. Other than that, the wave I'd agree is one of the better tools out there.
I find the saw and scissors pretty easy to open if I use my middle finger to take them out (almost like a less pretty spydie flick). Then I Use my thumb to open them all the way. Very little hand movement if I do it that way. Thanks for the vid!
Doesn’t work for me. I wind up breaking the magnetism when I use my middle finger to try and open saw… I can kind of do it with the scissors but it’s still extremely awkward. I’ll just use two hands.
@@AdvancedKnifeBroAhh that sucks. Awkward hand maneuver it is. Sorry if I missed it, but have you had binding issues with your pliers? If I got anything with my cutters, or out bay force in the handles, the plier head binds. I can wiggle my handles and get it back to normal. But it’s to the point that if I open my the tool to aggressively , it binds them
No binding issues with the pliers yet- seems good to me.
I just want a magnacut wave plus
Suggestion: This might seem like a less than likeable variety of knife to review, but in the spirit of giving some love to purpose built knives that truly are tools, I have a suggestion; The Olfa knife. Yes, it's a utility blade used most commonly for construction type purposes... I'm sure this will be popular in this crowd... Anyhow I've used and hated quite a few utility knives through the years. I tried out the Olfa L-5 recently for general jobsite utility razor needs (especially drywall) and I can't say enough good things about it. Try it out. You might catch a slightly different knife crowd with this one.
Can you baton with it?
Nice ! 🙂👍
Awls are great for making holes , belts, wood processing, fire steals
Loving the deep dive into what makes an AKB - what'd you do in film school? An appreciation for CinIMa certainly shines through. I'd been kicking around getting a MUT but I don't own enough 5.11 gear to justify it, think I'll have to save up for an ARC
I don’t do the guns enough for a MUT.
New here. And only 7 minutes in. But I have to say this is great content
Thank you!!!
My only question is.....when's it gonna be on Amazon...?
Thumbs up for the sculpin IPA
I'm fine with my blackened Surge.
The ARC has a ton of flex in it's frame.
