Hi everyone. I got a little waylaid making the video I was supposed to after the last, so this came as a good palette cleanser. The video is a collaboration with Luís Azevedo (Beyond The Frame), and tonally we went in a different direction than normal - therefore we decided to get an actor to do the vocals. You may recognize Stephen Chance from my short 'Life Outside The Frame' - bit.ly/2nhOEXK. We plan this to be the first of a series that explores comedy techniques in film (we may do TV too). I also still have VIP passes available from MUBI for new Patreon supporters.
I'm looking for a doco on the Coen bros which I saw years ago and explained their youth growing up in Minnesota and the influences they were exposed to in those days. Do you have any idea of that show ?
The Discarded Image what is the list of these movies featured? Why aren’t they already listed in the description?
You all probably dont give a shit but does any of you know of a way to get back into an Instagram account..? I stupidly lost the login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Brayan Canaan instablaster =)
@Alberto Camilo thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
well yeah that's just like your opinion man
Yours is also an opinion
A Serious Man is seriously underrated
Me sir my sir.
One of my favorite of Coens, funny as hell i cried of laughter.
A Seriously Underrated Man
I wish I could agree with you, I eagerly awaited that one as I thought iI would love it.I couldn't care less about any aspect of that film and found nothing funny or entertaining within it. It was filmed beautifully but intentionally was drab and cold which didn't help me. I'm glad to see others enjoyed it but I truly despised that entire experience.
i find it impenetrable. and i think the Coens made it so on purpose.
That Kerschner effect build-up took 7 seasons for GoT
Winter is coming...
winter went
What are you, nuts? Have you forgotten winter?
This is actually a really interesting series. It's teaching me things about the structure of humor that I never really had formalized in my head before.
"Wreaking havoc on comprehension" made me laugh harder than any joke told in this video.
This is so Coen Brothers, I'm not at all convinced that you aren't one of their fictional collaborators, like Roderick Jaynes. Are you sure you're real?
Roderick Jaynes is a cantankerous old man ;)
The way you’ve been able to recreate the flow of a Coen Brothers dialogue exchange in a video essay is pretty insane. 9:29 also.. is that Prezbo from The Wire?
His name's Buzz. He's got the fuzz, and he makes the elevator do what she duzz.
@@TomEyeTheSFMguy He provided my favorite line from the movie: "You know, for drinks?"
it feels like i both learned things and lost braincells beautiful video
Comedy is the fastest target to hit , and the quickest to age only few have mastered the ageless formula of this recipe -original quote from Lindsay Ellis elaborated -altered- by me lol
Rumiko Takahashi ain't one of these masters, despite vicious insistence from her fanboys/girls that she is.
i would say "the ageless formulaof this target" but sure.
These video essays actually keep me watching unlike the others
I love the Hudsukerproxy. Severely underrated film.
I think the way you said nomenclature just changed how I see the world a little bit. Thanks! Nice moves, keep it up!
I was hoping to see another video from this channel. It was a long wait, but I think it was worth it. Great video. Hopefully we will see another soon, good luck.
Coen brothers are awesome! They create weird characters in a weirder universe and intersperse action and comedy into the narrative!
This video is a beautiful piece of art. I keep on rewatching!
This deserves at least 1000x more views, this was fucking great.
this video is a work of art, congratulations
-Where does he work? -I can't say. -Where does he work? -Sir, I ain't at liberty to give out no information about our residents. -Where does he work? -Did you not hear me? We can't give out no information.
"You're a bit deaf, aren't you?"
Thank you! I always wondered what word Mr. Lebowski was using in his first conversation with the Dude. Micturate. I can't wait to use it, myself.
Epic line. “Every time a rug is micturated upon in this fair city, I’m to compensate the owner?”
Micturating mariners
This is a fantastic video! Everything from the script and the narration, to the editing. Great work! I hope you do make more in this series. :D
What's So Great About That? Thanks Grace. I'm glad all the pieces came together for people. There was always the worry it would be a bit left field from what I usually do, but the general reaction seems to be positive thus far.
The Discarded Image I agree, great job bud, keep it up!
This video essay is ahead of its time, truly awesome stuff guys. Get rid of that Assveedviseo guy though tbh... - Thomas
Amazing. Simply amazing. I will share this with everyone i know.
This is a marvelous piece of video. Thank you.
This was fantastic in every way! How the hell did it take so long to get into my recommendations?! Excellent- liked and subbed ☺️👍🏻
Wow! Great work in every aspect.
Excellent and insightful video... it's always a pleasure to watch your content
Fuck me, that was like Comedy 101. Perfect
You should have started with "Okay, then" from Raising Arizona, it's said at least 6 times by 6 different characters in the opening 11 min, and then several more times throughout the movie. The Coens are masters of repetition, well, they're masters of everything really, so...
This is such a smartly made video, man!
What an absolutely delightful video.
its a technique called, "The Kerschner Principle"
Good job, you watched the video
@@kazzajaxon7566 its a technique called, "The Kerschner Principle"
@@kennedycutter3668 It's a technique called The Kershner Principle.
@@reimereason You'd be forgiven for thinking that it's a technique called The Kerschner Principle
I'm sorry but what's the technique called again?
Wow. This video is so well made....
That was amazing.
You are a filmmaker yourself. The editing is so genius, that i tried to stick money through my smartphone and give it to you. It didn't work sadly.
I am beyond amazed to find out that the narrator of StudioBinder is in here
It sounds like him, but until we get the name of studiobinder's narrator, it's ambiguous, like the ending of a Coen Brothers film.
Not oral, aural and in the background: you know, for the kids...so good
HAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
what an absolute genius video
oral You know for kids! I ded. And on a list
To the initial question, I would have said Sam Raimi because as second unit director I'm pretty sure he directed the great hula hoop sequence of The Hudsucker Proxy, filling in the gap of the circle. You know, for kicks. The rest is pretty spot on the spot.
Stephen Chance is the next Paul Vaughan. How marvellous!
The people saying this video is messy don't understand that what is said is practiced immediately or ahead of time, so genius
Ikr.
Nice video 👌 great writing and voice over.
This is so well made.
lmao It's my favorite leftie on KZhead! What are you doing here, comrade?
The rabbi is busy had me dying. Holy shit

This vid is just plain silly-I LOVE IT
Superb video!
S tier editing
Holy shit this is an amazingly made video
very nice video. More on Coen Brothers :)
7:10 No, Homonym was an alien on Star Trek: The Next Generation played by Carel Struycken.
Brilliant.
Damn we’re in a tight spot!
Fuck man, great video, your editing is marvelous
I feel like I'm one of the few people who study the Kershner principle avidly.
Jesus Christ man, your editing is spot on and the content is just a bowl of excellence
Others might miss it, and I only caught the clever pattern after thinking about this video in retrospect once I actually finished it. I think it's actually inventively clever how the informative essay video itself was constructed in the steps it describes, thus becoming a clever way to emulate the styles of the directors being honoured. Basically supposed to be like the Coen brothers themselves made THIS vid, or feel as if you just watched a film of theirs. Clever way to be the example its depicting. ;)
Is the narrator in this video the narrator in some videos by studiobinder?
Goddamnit that was a really good video
no idea what you're going on about, but it's edited like a dream
Absolutely brilliant breakdown! With an English accent to boot! That's like getting 2 for the price of 1 to this damned Yank!
wow, that was a feat of editing
Enjoyed this. Maybe you can get William Preston Robertson to do the next...
His golden throat...
what are the names of all the films showed in the MUBI preview?
"it's that chasm; the proverbial slot"
Wow, really cool video
Subscribed. The Dude abides.

Fantastic (and from a writer's perspective), inspiring and motivating video. Cheers!
Cohen brother's movies are the bible of the cinema

Music @ 11:30?
Now you've done it. I've taken an in-ter-est....
great
What was the song at 10:46 ?
Pomp and ceremony
Prayer? Man's faith arises from the options he sees. So, as he finds restrictions, he will invent ways around them, improving his own abilities in the sheer face of inhibition. He would not rely on validation for success. Value lay in what it bestows. If there is any good fate ahead of me, let me see it.
The Coen Brothers use style to serve their narrative. This video on the other hand seemed like a clumsy attempt at style which drove at relatively little. A kaleidoscopic collection of quick cuts which drove in no particular direction. I imagine this is how watching a Coen brothers film feels if you aren’t paying attention; bewildered, disappointed, bored and annoyed.
Who's this Luïss Assavedo guy?
A real joker/holder on/leach. I highly doubt he's done anything creative on his own and just rides the coattails of others. But honestly-great job on this one (and that goes to both of you!)
