Do Christians and Muslims worship the same God? Is Allah the God of the Bible? Is Allah just a different name for Yahweh?
This week on the Straight Truth Podcast, host Dr. Josh Philpot tells us that Islam seems to teach that Allah is the one God of the World. He says that sounds a lot like the God we worship and confess as Christians. There seems to be this shared commitment to the God of the Bible and even to Abraham, the patriarch. Does this in any way make Christianity and Islam reconcilable? He asks Dr. Richard Caldwell to weigh in on this. Are Allah and Yahweh the same God?
Dr. Caldwell tells us no, they are not the same. Just because a religion is monotheistic doesn’t mean that the god they worship is the God of the Bible. Islam, Mormonism, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and even Orthodox Judaism are monotheistic. What we have to do as Christians is take what we know to be true of God from the Scriptures and ask if these other religions affirm those things. Wherever that affirmation is rejected, you know you are talking about a different god.
Our God is one, but He eternally exists in three persons; Father, Son, and Spirit. Our doctrines of God and the Scriptures are different than what Islam believes. Jesus for Islam is someone other than who we know Him to be. Dr. Caldwell says that he is not an expert on Islam, but he doesn’t have to be, and neither do we. We don’t have to be experts in Islam to know it is not the same as Christianity. We have to know the Truth and know it thoroughly. Anything that does not accord with it is an error.
Dr. Caldwell shares how we can have conversations that lead to evangelism with Islamists. As he does this, he points out two important things that are missing from Islam and all other religions. The message of grace and the message of the free gift of salvation in Jesus Christ are foreign to their religious systems. So when we have the opportunity to speak and share with them, we want to share our story but not just leave them with our story. We want to make sure to leave them with the Gospel and the Word of God. The Word of God has a life of its own, and it has a life that extends beyond our encounter with them.
But, can Christians use the word Allah as they share the gospel with Muslims that we might better connect with them? Dr. Caldwell says he would not use the word Allah for the God of the Bible. He sees this as unwise, given that words have associations in people's minds. As Christians, our task is to compare and contrast truth from error. We need to do this with language that makes the contrast clear. Because of error and confusion associated with the word Allah, we wouldn’t want those to whom we are witnessing to think we are talking about the same thing. As Dr. Caldwell already shared, there is a difference between the God of the Bible and Allah of Islam. So while we don’t want to be unnecessarily offensive, we also don’t want to be unclear about what we are saying.
It is not possible to harmonize the theology of Christianity with the theology of Islam. They are different at several essential points, as Dr. Caldwell has briefly pointed out. The term "god" does not refer to the same being in each religion. Islam’s Allah is not triune. For Islam, there is no second person of the Trinity that provides the way of salvation through redemption and no third person of the Trinity to apply that redemption. Our God, the God of the Bible, is not their god.
There is no name under heaven whereby "one could be saved" The name of Christ Jesus (Yeshua) is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Hallelujah !

Yay 😁 someone finally said it. Well answered Dr Richard! The Trinity is essential to the Christian faith. Without the Trinity, there would be no incarnation of God’s Son in the Person of Jesus Christ. Without Jesus Christ, there would be no salvation from sin. Without salvation, sin would condemn all to an eternal hell. Because of the crucial differences between the Christian and Muslim concepts of God and salvation, the two faiths cannot both be true. We don’t serve the same God.

A rose is a rose by any name. Could it be 'God' is beyond 'name' but may include all names? after all...'God' is the one universal reality, prime source creator of all. 'God' has many names, one substance many forms. 'God' is pure spirit, life, love, intelligence, truth, omnipresent, infinite, all-inclusive. I partially agree and disagree. I don't believe you should use the names Allah and Yahweh interchangeably just to relate more easily to someone of a different faith, however they still are the same God of the Old Testament. How we treat them today might be different, but that is separate from who they are originally. Though if you bring the trinity into the argument, then I would have to agree that in that sense then yes there is a difference, but again it is only a partial difference either way, since 1/3 of that formula is still God from the Old Testament.

They worship the God who is spirit but took the form of flesh (Isaiah 40:3-5) seeing that we, the subject of his salvation, are flesh. This he did inorder that he may defeat sin (which is the cause of death) through the flesh. Those who believe in his death and resurrection will surely inherent eternal life. So, Arab Christians do not worship a name but the God behind that name. They worship the true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob knowing that his attributes or nature is totally different to the god of the 7th century of whom there is no historical records or oral tradition of his existence before 610. Do Arab Christians pray 5 times a day facing towards the Kaaba and hajr e aswad which are an abomination to the true God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob? Friend, don't deceive yourselves. Much of what you say here I agree. However I am not aware of anywhere in the Bible where it says that Elohim is God's name. However it does say Gods name at Exodus 6 : 3. He also says that He did not reveal His name before. I understand that Elohim is a title, meaning God of gods This is because there are many false gods. And the creator is greater than all of them.

Allah is the most merciful being in existance. By the way in Arabic Christian bibles the word for god is Allah ..so if you are speaking in Arabic as a Christian you need to say Allah.
