    • My dad and I built a model steam engine with a pulley system that could either pump water up to a tin can tank that recycled itself, or hooked up to a Walkman motor that powered a mini street lamp. It had a bit more torque than these things though. Pulley size can have alot to do with rpm and you might be able to squeeze a bit more torque out of the Stirling that way, but not much.

      @simonpickering3609@simonpickering36094 жыл бұрын
    • No need for ignition source, these engines work on temperature differential, you can run them by cooling the chamber instead and the engine would just run backward. A sterling engine could be used to recover energy from any waste heat source, like exhaust gases or coolant of an internal combustion engine.

  • The V4 is very popular and very efficient for a sterling engine design. Kockums make a V4 submarine version with a narrow angle between cylinders that burns diesel and oxygen. The tolerances of sterling engines also depend on the design.

    @piranha031091@piranha0310915 жыл бұрын
    • Wonder if Tesla style rotor engine would be effective against sonar. I'm guessing probably not but supposedly they were really smooth running engines until the rotors expanded enough to cause catastrophic failure.

      @Falcodrin@Falcodrin5 жыл бұрын
    • @@Falcodrin : Electric engines probably would be better than any other thermal engine (far fewer moving parts, no back-and-forth motion), but you have to generate the electrical power from something. Batteries don't have the power density required for extended operation. Though according to Wikipedia, people are now looking into fuel cells. Or find something else to power with them. I'm just really interesting in seeing a small, efficient Stirling engine power something

    @thecooolguy1@thecooolguy15 жыл бұрын
    • It's probably possible but not effective. The Sterling engine can be made to operate very efficiently but for most cases they serve only as a novelty since the power you receive off a difference in temperature is quite small.

      @Falcodrin@Falcodrin5 жыл бұрын
    • @@Falcodrin I know that they don't make much power. In the real world, they only work in very large applications, hundreds of liters for the cylinder. But I still think it would be nice to see a smaller one put to use

      @thecooolguy1@thecooolguy15 жыл бұрын
    • @@thecooolguy1 honestly it's quite close to a steam engine in function and design so it can be made to work there are just reasons it's not seen. Similar to Tesla turbine engines the downfalls are just too much to overcome the positive.
