Here is the original product description from 2015:
Are you thinking about a 3D Artist career in the video game industry? This tutorial will help you understand and apply all aspects of creating high quality game art. Learn 3Ds Max with the Basics & Beyond Chapter and how to model and unwrap efficiently in the following hours featuring the AKM. Create textures as close to photo realism as possible with Substance Painter and make the portfolio shine by creating renders with Marmoset Toolbag 2. At the end we are going to post process those renders in Photoshop to get that extra edge out of it. This Course has it all.
The following tutorials are included:
✅ 3Ds Max 2016 - Basics & Beyond
✅ AKM - 3Ds Max 2016 - Modeling
✅ AKM - 3Ds Max 2016 - Unwrapping
✅ AKM - Substance Painter - Texturing
✅ AKM - Marmoset - Renders
Software used: 3Ds Max 2016, Photoshop, Substance Painter and Marmoset Toolbag 2.
Important: the modeling part of the tutorial makes heavy use of the "chamfer" modifier which is only available in 3Ds Max 2015 and 2016. If you have an older version of 3Ds Max you can instead google for a third party modifier called "quad chamfer".
Ah yes, I remember those days following this tutorial in 2016/17, one of the best tutorials after following the kukri knife tutorial. Once I was finished with this ak47 I was very proud to show it on my portfolio! I learn alot of key skills that made me ready to create any type of hardsurface model with confidence! Highly recommended for anyone looking to learn 3D modelling.
Love to read that you were happy with the end result and thanks for recommending it! It still boggles my mind that almost 8 years have passed since the release of it. Feels like yesterday to me almost 😵💫 Time flies but modelling fundamentals haven't changed too dramatically since then 🙂
This is a certified hood classic
This tutorial is a classic! It completely transformed me from a depressed medical student who hated studying medicine and knew nothing about basic 3D modeling, to achieving my dream job as a 3D artist in one of Thailand's top VFX companies. So thank you, Tim!
Hey bro, it was super awesome meeting with you in Bangkok and your story is the best kind of motivation I could possibly hear to keep going with the content! Look forward meeting up again!
What the hell. I had the opposite journey. I started as a hopeful and enthusiastic person, who knew some basic 3d modeling and ended up getting no job at all. I mean, It's like they specifically avoid me, not even an interview. Now I hate 3d.
@@Kinkoyaburi I totally get where you're coming from. The 3D industry can be quite competitive, and landing a job isn't always easy. When it comes to getting hired as a 3D artist, having a strong portfolio is key. It showcases your skills to potential employers. There could be a couple of reasons why you haven't been able to secure a job yet. First, it's possible that your portfolio may not yet be up to the quality that companies are looking for. Taking the time to refine your work and continuously improve can make a big difference. Secondly, sometimes it's just a matter of timing and luck. You may be incredibly talented, but if the company you're applying to already has all the positions filled, it can be challenging to land an interview. Keep putting yourself out there and exploring different opportunities. Persistence can pay off!
Man, this is a blast from the past. Just wanted to say thanks, Tim. Your tutorials over the years helped me get my first professional 3D artist position. Whatever content you release, I'll always support you. Cheers!
Amazing, I am happy to hear that and thanks for your support!! I hope your 3D Artist journey is treating you good so far and that you enjoy it🤝🙂
Thanks for this, bought your revolver tutorial on wingfox of all places, will be nice to go through this, and whatever else you create in the future. The instruction has been invaluable.
Hi! I just want to say that you are awesome :) thank you! Subbed. More success in the future with your career and channel!
unbelievable u still uploads 3dmax tutorial over 8 years, I am your big fans and learn a lot from you, hope you keep going on more upload, support you forever!
Many thanks for these tutorials. Your tutorials are gold.
Love the background, looks beautiful. Hope you are enjoying your new place!
Thank you! Yeah I love being here in Thailand. Next month it's been exactly a year and no regrets. After 10 years of Canada and essentially spending half of the time indoors due to the cold winter this is the best thing ever. The neighbor was unfortunately hammering and drilling a bit when I recorded that video. 😅
Thank you Tim!
You are my hero ! I watch you tutorial learn so much. Now I got a job into the game industry. Thank you so much Tim, I hope you can continue to share your knowledge with everyone :D
Hello Peter, this is truly the best kind of feedback I could wish for and very inspiring for me to continue. I hope your enjoying your 3D artist career! :)
Hi, I bought your tutorial from Steam a few years ago, and it was very helpful.😄👍
Hi Tim, nice to hear that! Yes, I was very proud to have it on Steam but sadly Steam didn't really make the biggest effort to make it a good platform for these kinds of long spanning tutorials. I just checked and it seems they delisted all my tutorials aside from the grenade tutorial which was free on there to begin with. I gotta reach out to them and ask how to make this tutorial free on there :)
thank you very much i bought it, have a nice coffee
thank you so much
wow, thanks a lot man
Oh wow you made this bad boy free? We're about to see a big surge of guns on artstation soon 😂
you are a god given gift.
Despite the tutorial being now 8 years old, I followed it a few months ago (september 2022) and I found it to be have aged very well, everything in 3DS max is pretty much exactly the same. The only part to me that had changed a bit was the texturing aspect on Substance, and even then, I was able to manage making the bridge between the old version in the tutorial and the new version I had on my PC. I just had to make my own version of the wood and used the coated metal from the more recent tutorial of the revolver. I'd totally recommend it to anyone willing to learn how to use 3DS Max.
Hi Girei, thanks for the kind words and you bring up a good point about the wood material that probably some people may have a problem with importing it. But in that case It's best to just use any pre-existing materials that Substane Painter comes with. Back when I made the tutorial that was pretty much the only one existing that looked good enough to replicate the wanted look :) Also awesome that you followed my latest tutorial as well! Are you liking the remesher workflow?
I knew it was worth it to sub to this channel
Thanks for the sub! I know I don't have a lot of regular content but I always aim to worthwhile with my videos. :)
Hi ChamferZone I do a bit of arch viz and looking to up my modeling skills have you switched to Blender for this time of thing now? or do you still use Max. Id say I'm medum level in max but not ver good as sub-D modeling. Do you think I should stick with Max or start learning blender ? Cheers
You're my idol tim❤
Aww thanks!! 😊This is truly flattering to hear.
can i ask a very important question? is blender modeling tool now on par with 3Ds max or even better now as of 2024 or any input? id love to make the switch if blender had actually caught up with max and maya any honest answer please tyia
have you seen new software called plasticity? what dou you think about it? maybe you can make some tutorials from it?
can this tutorial can be done with blender
Legend for releasing this. Does this mean we can expect a new paid tutorial? >.>
Hi Jay, I didn't forget about the tutorials but at the moment my focus is working on new weapons for 3D asset marketplaces like for example Unity marketplace so that people can use them in their games. The time factor on those big tutorials is always enormous but I could imagine that there'll be interesting cases as I work on the weapons that make it worthwhile to share here on the Discord or maybe in the shape of youtube tutorial content. I'll see about the tutorial content as I progress on those weapons. (The workflow I am using on those weapons is still the one from my last Revolver tutorial though.)
@@ChamferZone Completely understand. KZhead tutorial content certainly sounds like it could be interesting. Either way, I look forward to seeing whatever it is you choose to work on!
The modeling methods remain the same, regardless of the software, the only difference is in the buttons that you press. Is there a first missed one?
Sorry I messed up and the first video was unlisted! :) Should be there now.
Much like Skyrim, I bought this back in the day, but never got around to actually use it, lol!
I am studying Maya. Should I start learning 3ds max?
Hi Ivan, you'll be fine with Maya. If your in the process of studying I would recommend sticking to what your currently getting good work done with. Once you are on a professional level with maya it will be quite easy to switch to any other Modeling package. I also learned Blender not that long ago and it's pretty much all the same when it comes to modeling and unwrapping techniques.
@@ChamferZone Thanks for the answer. ♥
Hey ChamferZone can u update the Blender tutorials please, and can you try to add weapon tutorials? Thanks a lot we really appreciate your hard work.
Hi Adrian, I hope I can make more tutorials in the future but at the moment I focus on working on weapons for the 3D marketplaces so people can put them in their game. This is much faster then working on tutorials for me (and sadly also more lucrative .. sadly because I prefer working on tutorials) But regardless of that I hope to make more tutorials in the future and I might also make shorter video updates perhaps as I work on these weapons. You can also join the ChamferZone Discord (link on chamferzone.com) and learn collectively with the community on there. We have a lot of highly skilled people onboard.
3ds Max :( should have been blender :P
A lot of people followed the tutorial in Blender or in Maya and got very good results. Maybe you can try it too. The modeling techniques are not that different to what you would do in another modeling software. But for anyone that's completely new it's recommended to follow in the same software to not further complicate things. If I was to make the tutorial now the main difference would be that I use the remesher workflow that I show in my latest revolver tutorial :)
@@ChamferZone Good point, I'll check it out, was kidding mostly anyhow :D
You give blender users a bad name
@@Vondora Oh you wound me, please, do it again.
