Mantis Shrimp
Shrimp are considered a delicacy all over the world, but this one’s so beautiful that when you see it you won’t wanna eat it. The Mantis Shrimp is found in the Indo-Pacific Ocean and is known for its funky-looking, protruding eyes. But more so for its incredible, vibrant colors. This shrimp has orange, blue, green all in the same body! It’s quite a mesmerizing sight as it scuttles around.
But that’s not where its impressiveness runs out. This creature has a very sophisticated optic system. In fact, its optic system is the most complex in the entire animal kingdom! While we humans have only three photoreceptors for color analysis in our eyes, this guy’s got twelve! This means it can see objects from three corners of the eyes! Pretty neat right!
Caribbean Reef Octopus
This big guy’s got some tough enemies, so it’s mastered the art of camouflage to an impressive extent. The Caribbean Reef Octopus is a relatively small octopus species at a maximum length of twelve centimeters and a weight of more than a pound. This guy can change up its colors, patterns, and even texture to blend into its environment!
It becomes quite tricky to spot it on the sea bedor on a reef. It’s hunted by large fish and sharks, so naturally, it’s a pro at fooling them into thinking it's just one with the seaweed. It’s so good at what it does that scientists find it difficult to describe! It’s strictly nocturnal so it only comes out and hunts at night. It’s incredible to watch this guy change appearances as it moves along the bottom of the sea.
