  • I feel for Freddie, her entire ancestry is a history textbook for slavery, she has west African genetics, which in slave trade era was primarily the spot where Europeans would pick up the slaves (due to the ports) and her European % is because somewhere along her family's history, the family member who was a slave was most likely raped by her owner 😞, I can understand her disappointment, all the other girls are happy at the surprise of their genetic make up while Freddie's is the reality of black Americans. 😣❤️

    • @Cathy M ....Are you really trying to tell people they shouldn't be pissed off because of racist slavers and rapists? Nobody should have to justify that for any reason, or feel "grateful" for it. You really need to check your priorities and the way you treat black history.

    • Yeah honestly anyone who descends from a most likely interracial couple more than a few generations back, whether they're white with a little bit of African ancestry or black with a little bit of European ancestry, that bit of DNA probably got into their genes through some unpleasant means.

      @lauragill2296@lauragill22966 жыл бұрын
    • Laura Gill no it wouldn't. interracial couples have existed in Europe for thousands of years. The Roman empire spanned 3 continents and was pluralistic, open and multiethnic. interracial marriage occurred frequently over the course of thousands of years as race laws didn't exist. Its the same story in North Africa and Western Asia too.

      @betrousaltaweel@betrousaltaweel6 жыл бұрын
    • Alter Ego yes Freddie's ancestors probably were raped. its not "for a minority in a minority" most North Africans and most Middle Easterners have some white European ancestry as a result of the Ottoman Empire, the Roman Empire and the Islamic Caliphates each lasting for centuries, spanning three continents, and each being multiethnic with open borders. Interracial relationships were extremely common.

Another thing to keep in mind, is that tests like these only report what cultures match the genes you have inherited. We only inherit 50% of our parents’ DNA. • We think of slavery as something that happened a long time ago, something that is distant. But. Here it is. When you're taught in history class about the trade triangle between the continents you are never taught about it in the full gravity that people were taken. Lives were stolen. People were raped. The reality of slavery in the US is never really given the gravity it deserves when we are taught about it. And that is evident so much here. What Freddie knew of her background was minimal because of what others did to her ancestors. Most African Americans do not have the knowledge of their own history that people like me do. And. I don't know. It just makes me so sad. I don't feel like there has ever been a formal acknowledgement of what we did to those people so long ago. We have not given them a chance to grieve.

Africans back then did not see themselves as the same people Cultural, Ethnically, Religiously and they were from different tribes so no they did not see themselves as all the same that idea came from you people.The whole idea “of blackness” wasn’t a thing for them just because they were from the same continent did not make them the same so saying they sold “each other” or “Africans sold other Africans” is an ignorant statement. And also you can’t tell a group of people that they can’t grieved their ancestors and family members because it did not happen to them. Slavery wasn’t just for a few months it was for Over 300-400 YEARS! So the trauma they went through has been passed down through generations after generations. Even after slavery black People were still oppressed and put down by you people with your Jim Crow laws and Police brutality. So we never really got a chance to grieve! And lastly grieving doesn’t have nothing to do with something happening to “you” specifically. If your grandmother got raped and beat wouldn’t you grieve ?

  • Just a reminder guys, these tests are based on the genetics you INHERITED from your parents. Even if one of your grandparents is 100% something, it doesn't mean you're 25% that, because genetic inheritance is a lot more complicated than we're taught. (My dad and his three siblings took the same genetic tests and found significant differences in their regional genetic make-ups).

    • I can't wait until I have some money to do this. My brother is interested, too (which gets us a bit more info, on the paternal side). Our paternal grandmother was adopted at a time when children were often adopted as free labour, not so much because someone wanted to be a loving parent to them. So she was quite disconnected from her roots. She claimed half Ukrainian, half Scottish (very typical of the Canadian prairies), but we've seen with these tests how wrong relatives' claims can be. On my mom's side, my grandfather was probably 100% Dutch. He was from a less populated area, a village near Groningen (northern province). My grandmother, we suspect she is mixed with some other ancestry, possibly Spanish or Indonesian (yay, colonialism). She and most of her many sisters had dark hair and pale, olive complexions. She was also from the city, Rotterdam, so an urban area where there's more variety in ethnicity. I just like imagining the history of the people I come from, so it would be nice to know.

    • I know right! I was saddened by it because it shows that part of her heritage was fully African around the 1800s meaning that one of her Black ancestors (probably women) was raped, or had some type of relationship with his/her master. Maybe I'm overthinking it but Black people didn't have it so well in the 1800s and I don't think a relationship between a Black individual and a European individual came about all hunky dory.

Some even had friendly relations with their slaves, and affairs. While it doens't make slavery okay AT ALL, I just wanted to point out that not all slaves were miserable all the time. There's a mild/decent chance that Freddie's ancestor was a lovechild. (says the optimist in me lol)

    • Yes!! They try to take certain history out of textbooks but when you actually realize that it happens to you ancestor it more devasting. Like blacks in the USA know about slavery but a lot don't realize it happened to their ancestor. Which is messed up!! Like even if it people you don't know most Black Americans can't trace where they come from. Compared to African- Americans who can trace their ancestor history and bloodline.

IMO if she knew her family had slave background, she should have expected European like i did, however it is upsetting to see just how much is in your blood. I took a DNA test and expected mostly asian and african mixed with some european but ended up getting 40% european... Especially when we an be totally wrong as in Kristin's case, who thought she was Italian and turns out she is only 7%. I am not that surprised she is only 79% European because she has prominent features like her nose, high cheek bones, and eyes that might give away she is part native american. As for Chantel not knowing she is part native american (because she is almost as european as Kristin), I think its a lack of knowledge of Mexico and its history as well.
