  • Today was an awful Day to Vault.It Always Helps to Watch Your Videos, Your Terminology just Clicks Better than what My Coaches Explain to me

    • Happy something i said clicked! I'm sure for some other people i'm a nightmare to listen to. Like pole vault there are lots of ways to coach which is why that coaching/athlete relationship is so important.

  • The main reason I look forward to Wednesdays! Pole vault Vlog 😀 As of next week I won't get a chance to vault for like 4 months - so any pole vault inspiration would be awesome ( if there's any cool inspiration you've had? ) Also - the live feed could be sweet! A win-win for you maybe if you can powerhouse your way through a load of questions! hopefully everyone can tune in - and you could even get things rolling with your mental health Mondays too! Awesome as always Shawn!

  • Hey Shawn, thanks for doing this for so long...you've helped me a bunch with all this information so i can explain to my kids in simplest possible way of how to get things done. I have a suggestion on what you can talk about next week. When vaulters learn to take off foot or more under, eventually their lower back starts to hurt and it creates a bunch of problems for them and for me because recovery process is so long, so can you give me and all of us watching some pointers how to correct that by doing certain exercises, how much the recovery should last, when to increase intensity and stuff like that. Thanks again

  • I've been working on moving up poles so thank you for this! One question: I have a large lump/bruise in the crook of my thumb on top of the bone there from vaulting, is this because I am holding the pole wrong or is it just the fact that it's a heavier pole and I keep holding a lot of weight on that area? Did you ever have anything like it

    @laurenpawlowski7325@laurenpawlowski73257 жыл бұрын
    • On your bottom hand? Next time you run with the pole try to create a v with your thumb and index finger vs squeezing it so hard. another little trick is tucking your elbow in as close to your center line as possible. Hope I'm answering this corectly

  • Hey man, I'm not sure if you'll respond or not but I have 3 problems. The first is that when I go to plant my top arm is bending to my far right. My second problem is that I seem to kick out straight like a pencil at the end of my jump, the third is my biggest problem, even tho I can get over the bar, my arms knock it off when I go to push my pole away.

  • I've been having this problem where I over analyze on what I need to do to get over the bar as I'm about to start running down the lane. My coach reminds me to just not think about it and to just do it. Is there any tips I can get on how to maybe clear my mind before my jump or should I actually be thinking on what I'm going to do?

    @christiangrossetti4904@christiangrossetti49047 жыл бұрын
    • So you have our conscious/thinking mind and our unconscience/ reacting mind. Our thinking mind is in charge of problem-solving and making sense of the world where or reacting mind reacts to the world, its also known as instincts. Or athletes call it being in the zone. You need both! You need the thinking mind to make changes so our reacting mind reacts in a way that makes you jump higher! Long story short, i like to focus on the 1 thing that will give me the most bang for my buck. Too much thinking or analysis can lead to nothing happening. I've heard a coach call it paralysis by analysis. For me it was looking at the box. That was my one big cure that worked the most. So pick one thing and focus on that!

  • Yo Shawn, I pole vault for my high school team and this season I moved up to a heavier pole and its also about a foot longer. I noticed that I am not bending it half as much as I used to bend my old pole and I think it is because I am gripping too far down. Can I just grip higher and run back to find my step and move up the pole or is there something else I need to do before?

  • Hey, so I'm 115lbs and I'm using a 11ft pole that's 120lbs. I'm doing a five left run up, and I'm about 3/4 of the way up the pole. I was wondering what I should do to jump sooner so I can get more time in the air to bring my feet up, as I'm not getting much bend at all. My jump usually consists of me being able to get to around 8' with only being able to bring my feet/legs horizontal to the ground. I don't know how to twist or invert, but the pole pretty much stays straight throughout my entire jump. I was wondering what I could do to better my jump, and get my feet up, twist and/or get inverted. I just have no clue how to start getting my form right, and I know it will improve my jump but I'm not sure if it's the flex of the pole, the weight, the height or my grip. I know my form is bad but I'd like some tips on how to start vaulting correctly. For some other info, I'm a guy and I'm a senior in high school who has been doing track all 4 years, and for a speed reference, I have a 300m time of 43.46. Thanks!

    • Hey Nick! If you look at old pole vault videos the first poles that were used were bamboo and didn't bend either! I actually have all my athletes start without bending the pole just to get the mechanics down. So you're right on track! This video will help with the invert! kzhead.info/sun/fa-veK6omIOgY6s/bejne.html

  • Hello my name is Joshua and i am a high school student. I weight 145lbs and i am on a 13”6 (height) 155lbs (weight) pole. We have a 14”9, 170 pole that i can move up to but i have a huge struggle being able to use the pole. It is super stiff but my run is five lefts and i am wondering if moving to seven lefts would help me out. I cannot bend the pole from the five lefts so i am curious if seven will help me along with technique drill? I appreciate your time truly.

    • That's a massive massive jump man. If i were you or you were one of my athlete's id try to find some smaller poles to eventually progress to that one. To break it down that's like going up 7 poles. Safe pole vaulting first and always. I'd reach out to clubs or other schools around the area and see if they have some of those poles for ya. If not, maybe talk to your AD and see if he would be willing to get a few poles to fill the gap. That buy 2 get 1 free or buy 3 get 2 free deal is still up for another few weeks. It might be worth looking into. The worst they say is no and you end up exactly where you are now.

I weigh 143 Ibs and I used a 145 pole and I started over bending that, I moved up to a 154 and after the second meet I started over bending that. I plan on using a 160 but it has a different flex and is 2 ft higher then the other two and it doesn't bend nearly as much. should I change my grip? it feels a lot harder to go heights that were once easy for me, its 13,6 and the highest i got on it was 9ft and thats not a hard jump for me. Should I wait till I'm faster to use it?

  • Regarding the I am enough mental health matter… I think part of the problem is sexism in the sport. Women are expected to compete in a uniform similar to a bikini whereas men are NOT expected to compete in a speedo. It seems that people want to watch a sport where women are barely dressed but my question is why don't women wear the same type of shorts that men wear while competing? Wouldn't this take away a lot of the feeling of not looking sexy enough? If people really care about women's body issues, then why isn't there a movement to change the uniform for women in this sport?
