This was awesome. Now I am going to have to watch all of BORGs videos!
This is a Router/Network storage device. It works with Time Machine in OSX and makes hourly back-ups to all connected devices over Wifi or through an ethernet cable. The idea is that you never have to remember to back-up your computer because it is done periodically throughout the day for you. It also functions as an external hard drive over Wifi so you can make copies of files or store large amounts of data (pics, music etc) and access them when you are connected to it. I have the older version for about 2 years, the 3TB version and it backs up all the Macs in the house.
One of them is. One is not.
KoolanceGamer680 Can i use it as USB plug in on my tv?/ can i use it (via the ethernet )on my smart tv to access the data?
Of course
i know im randomly asking but does anybody know a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my password. I appreciate any tips you can offer me
@Shane Peter instablaster ;)
Thank you! This video made my "life" easier! I have read over and over reviews online and I still went back to square one when it comes to understanding what each device did. This video is right on!!!! :)
I've never quite understood what the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule does, until today. Thanks, Mike! Great walkthrough
The Airport Extreme, Is AWESOME!!!! Best router ever!!! Its so fast and stable. Beats $400 Netgear X8, and other high end routers.
TheRealDamaini so agree wth you,I just bought it and holy shit it mind blowing how fast my wifi is now
TheRealDamaini Nike
honestly still unbeatable. It has beaming technology unseen in any other router on the market. I'm so sad that apple discontinued them
I wish these were still sold
Buy used one off of ebay then..
@@bstaznkid4lyfe392 yep. It just works.
I really didn't understand what these devices where till I started looking at videos I'm fairly new to the Mac, but other KZhead videos where confusing, you explained it with great detail and a manageable way to comprehend, Thanks 👍👍
thank you for show these products. it helps us to learn about many special products
I had to replace my almost 8 year old 2nd generation Airport 80211n. This new one seems to be just as rock solid as the old one. The Plus is it doesn't get as hot as the old device did. I was always expecting the old one to overheat as hot as it got, but it never did. I really like Apple hardware as in many cases it's built like a tank, and just lasts.
cuz modems never overheat
3,072 GB that is amazing!!
Love the black background! Compliments the white Apple packaging well!
You are one of the best unboxers ever
I feel like his password is time capsule
What exactly are these? Do i replace my modem or router? Both? Can I keep them? I really dont understand, and I bought one because the guy at the store said it was phenomenal.
It will replace your Router. If you have a Modem/Router just plug it into that and disable the router. It is phenomenal.
They should bring this back
I've had an Airport Extreme for a few years now as a 2nd router / Wifi extender for my house as it's 2 stories and my very very top of the line routers from Asus, Netgear, Buffalo, etc - none will provide reliable connections for the whole house. So anywho the years I've upgraded my main router many times but kept the Airport Extreme in the same play downstairs, directly wired to work as another wifi station - and I must say, years later it's still fantastic. It's pretty much completely stable - I rarely have to touch it. Maybe once every 6 months if something seems a little flaky I'll reboot it, but it might even be less rare than that. My main upstairs routers generally have to rebooted quite a bit more often - but they're not bad either. The Airport Extreme, with no external antennas, is really impressive - it covers a very large area and the speeds on the thing are great. If I had a smaller place or if it was just one story an Airport Extreme would be a perfect solution. It's very easy to setup, which isn't a big deal to me but most people that's a big deal, and the speed and coverage compete with the latest $300 routers I have with 8 external antennas sticking out of it - although with the external antennas it does let you aim them - so I aim a few outside so I can get limited coverage in my yard.
Rod Munch hey man whats the best Wi-Fi router for a 2 stories house ? not that expensive like this 300dollar can u please suggest some models ! thank you
These are actually a pretty good solution and you can find them used for a fairly good price. Apple stuff tends to last a long time because it is expensive - but also well made. However, at least with my 2 story house a single router just doesn't cut it. Not sure how big your place is by my place is a pretty good size and I placed extra sound insulating material in the walls when I had it built and I think that really kills the signal since I rarely get as good a signal as most people claim. Anyways the cheapest solution, which might be the best solution, would be to get a mid-ranged router, something in the $100 range, then get a wifi extender - they run maybe $50 or so. You place your main router stairs if possible, then put your extender where you can plug it in where it still gets a good signal - that should give you coverage of almost everything. Most extenders just plug directly into the wall - they work wirelessly so you don't need to run cables or do anything - just plug it in, follow the directions and you're good to go. I will say don't go cheap on wifi or you'll drive yourself and whoever has to use it nuts with constantly rebooting it, dealing with signal drops, poor range, etc. In my experience you don't have to go top of the line with routers, but you don't ever want to go cheap. If you're really on a budget find a top router from like 2 or 3 years ago and then buy one used, they don't really keep their value all that much and a top of the line router from 2-3 years ago should easily outperform a newer cheap router, plus it should have stable firmware, etc. Just my suggestion - but I don't have any model numbers to give. But seriously this is a good dead simple choice, in particular if you have an iPhone or iPad since the apple app that works with it is very simple to use and this is by far the most stable router I've ever used, ever.
Looks nice, but the big question is: *Can I land a plane on it?*
Nice model plane will work nicely :)
I watched your video like 20 times very good, you should work for Apple!
Great vid. I bought an Extreme last year. I would like a time capsule you really sold it, Sir!
Thank you SO much for your reply! I called apple with this very same question a few days ago and the apple 'genius' said that using Time Capsule as a range extender wouldn't work properly. It should to be connected to the modem with a wire so it could function as a new modem. He also added that the airport express was their only range extender, when I asked if TC isn't just an Airport Exprss with a harddriver he didn't know what to say anymore... Anyway, thank you for all your amazing videos!
Why do I need one of these if I already have wi-fi and I have an external hard drive for time capsule? I don't get it. I was hoping this video would give me some insight into the benefits of purchasing this if I already have the other tools I previously mentioned.
Buying a route is not like buying a phone, or a new computer. It takes a LONG time for your route to be out dated if it can't handle fast internet speeds, handle moderate gaming, or multiple devices then it's time to go otherwise there is no reason to get a new one.
Those "tools" that you mentioned are what these devices do. Unless I'm reading your question wrong, that's like asking "Why do I need that blue hammer when I already have this red hammer?" You don't. It's just for people who are looking into getting a new router, looking to expand the reach of their current router, and/or are looking for an external hard drive to back up their computers. If you already have things that do that, you're in good shape and can pretty much disregard this video.
you buy these if your ISPs router comes with Internet censorship such as on the SKY SR102 which comes with the sky broadband shield enabled by default.
WLAN speed= 1Gbps??
Best videos about electronics
Thank you for this great review!
Is the Extreme still worth in 2019 ? I saw Apple Premium Reseller in my country still selling AirPort Extreme at USD 110.
Yes. I have one, and it is very good!
I’m thinking about getting one too, is it worth it? Like how is working for you guys?
Junior Nguyen it‘s working very Good. Sorry for Bad english, i‘m from Germany
i try many thing , apple the best , now i used 3 of them in my house and 1 in the way buy it from ebuy good quality good signal and no malfunctions in about 10 years of use

Why Must You Capitalize Every Word You Say?
COZ
Yes
Dnt waste his time?,jst gv him the answer if u wud!
I think I prefer the old form factor. I actually just bought 2 airport express and I absolutely love their form factor. They provide everything I need by way of connectivity in a smaller package than my old airport extreme.
I am totally buying one of these!! Great video Mike
Is the time capsule a cloud device. If I'm using with my iPad or iPod can I use it to stream or remote access my media files
9:35 can you do that with an AirPort?
Tristan N yes
Love your reviews! l so want the new Airport Extreme!
As always an excellent walkthrough.
Can anyone explain what is this? By reading comments and watching video I think its router but can we connect this in other devices which doesn't run IOS? And why is this calling Airport Extreme and Time Capsule? Whats different in this two?
+Pranish Khadgi They are routers, they work with all devices, the time capsule has an extra which is backup storage for your mac.
+Bishr Arar do we need to connect with our internet service provider ??
Yes! With just an ethernet cable plugged to any of the 2 apple products,u are good to go after setting it right.
RIP :(
Useful info and very well done, as always!
Always enjoy your vids Mike!
Can i buy it in 2019
How well dos it work well?
Interesting did I you know Apple said that they will be shooting down the AirPort Extreme and supposedly they won’t work any more !
UnLTDGamingHD ooo ok yes I meant that by 2022 or something like that the thing will be discontinued
Simple installation and strong signal. That's all that we need at this household. We're happy with this purchase and recommend it to others.
Get it here! goo.gl/t2nvC8
I need one because my netgear router is downstairs with our computer and im always up stairs and my ipad says it has 3 or 2 bars and its VERY SLUGGISH WHEN IM UP STAIRS so i need one of these

Im here. 7th apr 2021
12/22.
this is used for what??
maghf0or this is a router (extreme) and (time capsule) is a router and backup machine for macs
PANOS KOLL123 mean a wifi router??
the extreme is jsut a router and time capsule is a router and a backup machine
They're both wireless routers, for start. You plug your fiber, DSL, or cable modem into them and they create a Wi-Fi network. One of them also has a built-in hard drive, which allows you to store files on it. You can then access the files from any computer or device on your network. The hard drive also supports Time Machine, Apple's automatic backup software for Macs.
thumbs up for the detail expose
And people say windows is better... I was a windows user but recently switched to apple. I'm never going back to Microsoft.
Lies
i hated windows so much but couldn't afford a macbook air at the time thati switched to linux and i loved linux

thunder striker hi
thunder striker you have a big storm coming
Apple is so much better than Microsoft. I have one of these.
Pr0No08 Dued the kid is like 5 he has no clue what he is talking about.
Until it eventually dies from heat death. My previous generation Time Capsule 500 GB was great for 3 years until the logic board fried from heat build up over the years, and that had a fan. These are now fanless and probably won't last long.

Kick ass unboxing and review, subscribed!
thanks for the video...it helped me alot
hello,i´m brazilian and love your vídeos!
Your voice is amazing sir..
when he removed the wrapper is just so satisfying
Immensely informative video, thanks!
I'm obsessive and it feels so good seeing apple products packaging...... And when peeling the plastic off..... OH MY GOD!
actually you can, I have an HDD mounted using the USB port on my airport extreme. time machine automatically mounts it and starts backupping when needed. quite handy!
Great review!!! Keep it up
iOS 7 looks amazing! Could you do a full review of it?
Cool video! congrats from Brasil!
Another great video, thanks for the insight.
I've had iOS 7 since beta 4. It's AWESOME!
I really like this design and it takes up less space then the previous one.
Great vid!
Hi. Really great review. Thanks.
Thanks, that was great. Clear and concise.
Wow I have 1 airport Extreme....this is very speed yeaaaaa!!! Thanks for video
this is really cool. i might get this
The express (that one that looks like a white AppleTV) only can use the USB port for printing. The Extreme however can, if you first plug in a USB hub, support harddrives AND printers. And yes, if you have plugged in a hard drive into the Airport (extreme) it basically works like a Time Capsule.
Airport Extreme is a Wireless Router made by Apple. It is a 802.11 AC wireless router. The Time Capsule is the same Wireless Router but with a 2 or 3 terabyte HD installed as a network storage drive.
I want to thank you for this review. I'm looking forward to hearing what you thing about iOS 7. I'm sorry if I missed your review of it. I'll try to find it if you've already dun it. Also, looking forward to hearing your review of the new Mac Pro.
Thank you for your input NoahAbbey. I think I might invest in this.
They need to bring these back
You should do a projector unboxing and demo
Ur the best unboxer ever lol
awesome review
Thank you! Your videos inspired me to transition to the Mac Ecosystem :D Waiting for my Airport Extreme to arrive. :) Never hurts to help and hope! (Apple Watch will be very late here at the Philippines as always so this is my chance)
excellent review
at 4:15 ..did you connect the airport extreme to the existing time capsule ? and did the speed become slower after u extended the network. im sorta confused because at 5:40 airport express is shown connected to the existing timecapsule whereas the new extreme is directly shown connected to the internet.... .great video tho
Just got the extreme last night. My internet speed significantly increased after I replaced my old belkin router with this. :)
You make the best tech videos on youtube and you always have the latest tech when it comes out. So I wanted to know if you where going to get the Samsung galaxy active any time soon?
Real nice, Borg.
I am seriously considering on getting one to back up data on my Mac. Are you able to also use it as a storage device as well? I wasn't too sure if I could use it almost like a hard-drive, and store information on it. Music, Photos, etc?
It's sad apple won't go into the mesh router business they made such great routers and stylish routers. Oh well still using that one for about 5 years and have had no problems. I plan on keeping mine for now.
The Airport Extreme will do just fine in extending your existing wireless network. The only one that's different is the airport express base station because it will only extend the network of another apple router only. airport extreme and time capsule are a little more versatile
Love your videos!! We bought this a couple of weeks ago- when we bought our 27 inch fusionMac (after watching your vid). I bought my little girl a new MacBook Pro with the I7 processor. Can I hook up her MacBook to the time capsule along with our IMac?
the Airport Express (the one shown at 5:48) is the only one that had/has an analog/optical audio jack in the back of it to be used to stream music to whatever you had hooked up to it aka AirPlay (not called AirTunes anymore after AirPlay was invented)
Ok, thank you very much and thanks for the reply!
The Airport Extreme and TIme Capsule will. The Airport Express on the other hand will only extend the network range for another Apple router only. If the initial router is not an Apple router then it only adds either wireless printing (if you have a usb printer hooked up to it) or AirPlay functionality (if you have something hooked up to the audio jack on it) to your wireless network.
Thanks for the vid!
Are you talking about the mobile USB modems that you get from a wireless carrier, like Sprint or AT&T? To use the AirPort devices with Internet, you need an Ethernet cable running from your modem to the WAN port on the back of the AirPort. USB modems usually don't have an Ethernet output to allow that. There might be a way to do it with some tricks, but unfortunately I don't know enough about networking to have an answer.
Dude I miss old good Airport Extreme 🥲
Do you need a cable from the wall like carbon fiber or is it just plug int the wall and use?
I would love to see you do a range test with either one of them.
I was your first like. After 7 years.
Nice video! They look beautiful :,)
I believe so. I used to use mine that way.
It is a router of sorts, but a router is still required other than the Airport Extreme. So for example im with BT, my ADSL Connection comes in through the BT HomeHub 3.0 then via Ethernet connects to the Extreme's WAN port, and is in bridgemode to act as the networks hub and use it's wireless hardware.
Great video! A question, if I buy a new time capsule to replace my old one, is there a quick way to transfer my prior back-up in the old one to the new one?
I wish these were still being updated.
