Great timing by Martins, quick stepping back baiting Islam to overextend and then coming right back with a counter punch in a split second. I suppose that was part of his game plan, otherwise I think one have to be extremely skilled to do it in the moment that fast. Islam is really skilled and hard to beat, but that one got him good. Good learning lesson for him, only made him stronger afterwards.

Officially, he hasn't but it's really hard to score the Tibau fight in his favour. I've tried several times and I don't see it. Even after the fight before they announced the scores Rogan and Goldberg were saying how the first loss will be a big learning experience for Khabib and were stunned by the call. It's like how the GSP Hendricks fight got scored wrong or how the Jones Reyes one got messed up. The officially won but they didn't really.

He is definitely not defending himself or trying to get in a defensive position so I don't see how he is going to block the next couple of punches which were going to have more power than the previous ground strike. Islam knows he lost this as well. So it is weird for someone to call it an early stoppage when even the fighter involved knows it was not early. Sure "he could have survived" but if that is your logic then 95% of other tko stoppags were early cause they could have survived

Doesn't have the athleticism to do what Khabib does, so he's now more technical on the feet than Khabib ever was. He's doing wild man striking here like Khabib did, but he just looks slow doing it. Now he sets it up well with relatively tight striking before going to grappling.

He even threw his legs in position for full guard. If that weren't the case, why did the ref pushing off Martins move Islam's body the way it did? That's an insane counter though. The reaction time is incredible.
Great timing by Martins, quick stepping back baiting Islam to overextend and then coming right back with a counter punch in a split second. I suppose that was part of his game plan, otherwise I think one have to be extremely skilled to do it in the moment that fast. Islam is really skilled and hard to beat, but that one got him good. Good learning lesson for him, only made him stronger afterwards.
Martins had a pretty good record at this point. It sucks that he couldn't maintain it and that he was released from the promotion eventually.
Makhachev is much more cautious since this fight. A hard lesson to learn but he was able to use this experience and improve.
