The Joy Of Being A Spiritual Loser: Being No One Going No Where

This video will draw on a range of wildly diverse sources - from ancient Taoism to the French Situationists of the 1960s - to suggest that deep human satisfaction lies not in the constant striving to improve, even to improve spiritually, but in the simple momentary act of relaxing and releasing the clenched knot of effort and realising what is called in Taoism, Wu Wei, or effortless effort.
We will examine the wisdom of Lao Tzu, Josef Pieper, Lin Yutang, Longchenpa, Paul Lafargue, and Guy Debord all of whom emphasised the necessity of being no one, of letting go of the ego-driven pursuit of success and recognition.
If we do this, we also discover that true human authenticity - or as Nietzsche said: becoming ourselves - requires this act of deep relaxation.
To put it simply: Tension is who we think we should be. Relaxation is who we are.
The German-Korean philosopher, Byung-Chul Han, examines this concept of burnout in modern society in his book “The Burnout Society,” particularly in the context of contemporary work culture.
Han argues that burnout is not merely a result of excessive workload or stress but is deeply rooted in the culture of achievement, positivity, and constant self-optimization that characterises our times.
Han suggests that in the age of digital connectivity and social media, individuals are under constant pressure to present themselves as successful and happy.
That is to say, to present oneself as going somewhere.

    • Does any other spiritual nerd have any recommendations regarding Longchenpa? I’m interested in reading him and will read Old Man Basking in the Sun, but I’m also curious about other works. I’ve looked on Amazon and found a trilogy entitled Finding Rest in the Nature of the Mind. Sometimes I get confused about the source of these books and prefer a collection of the totality of a teacher’s writings, not selected essays gleaning what a translator finds suitable for a book. Also, I’m very intrigued by Aurobindo and his books but that man was so prolific that I honestly don’t have an idea of where to start. If anyone is reading this and wants to dive into some Christian mysticism, I couldn’t recommend the Collected Works of Saint John of the Cross enough. He even explains thoroughly the mystical states of oblivion. Which his term oblivion is the same as Samadhi in the eastern traditions. I find his wisdom and his parallels to the east beautiful and it’s become one of my favorite books.

  • I think another answer to the end of the video is that people aren't taught how to handle their internal world. The moment people stop producing, or distracting themselves, and sit still, they have to face everything they've been bottling up their whole lives. It's a common issue with new meditators, being overwhelmed by their past and feelings. It's the reason people can't settle and fall asleep at night and get prescriptions to calm their racing mind because they have "insomnia." Bed time is often the only time our brain gets moments of loafing to express what we've been avoiding. So we go to bed with our phones in our hands, distracted until we pass out, so that there isn't a moment to face what's happening inside.

I felt so lost but i leaned into trusting everything would be okay, just keep flowing with the changes. Then i experienced a big shift.. suddenly i noticed i felt this subtle buzz of excitement for my meditation.. not for any other reason than to sit with god and be near to the self. To just BE.

  • Here’s the thing: it’s other people who put demands on me. By that I mean they want to place me in their competition: they judge me on how I look, my job, what I own, my experiences, do I have a girlfriend or wife, do I have children, I’m judged, judged, judged. I’m 51 now and have been judged by my peers and society since 5 or so years old. Judged, judged, judged. It’s never ending. Hell really is other people. They demand you play the sordid game of trying to look your best, earn as much as possible…on and on, and it’s human nature to want to be loved and accepted, so you dabble in the charade of trying to “be better”, and it’s ultimately miserable. We are trapped between wanting fellowship and love, and wanting to be accepted simply for who we are. Yet society will never ever accept us for who we are. I basically live like a hermit now. Not truly “happy”, but also knowing that society is so toxic with its ideas that it offers me nothing but a set of arbitrary rules for “self-improvement” that are becoming ever more unattainable anyway. And let’s add into the mix that most people live in a “hyper reality” now: a world of the good looking, successful and rich via Insta and TikTok. People’s expectations of what a good life is have become evermore unrealistic. It’s a heady mix.

I no longer love it or hate it. I understand I have to participate but now I'm just the witness watching all go by like the leaves on a river. And you know what, I'm learning to love it all.

My best moments are when I'm in a flow state, maybe it's writing music or riding my bike, or just day-dreaming. Occasionally I get in that flow state with a 1 to 1 communication (me and one other person), and that's great. We are talking on the same wavelength. I guess the accepting thing is just to know that these "better" times come and go.

"This is not an intellectual understanding. After we become whole enough or put together enough we have "freed" enough of our energy to know the Queendom-Kingdom of heaven. Knowing the Queendon-Kingdom of heaven is the same as knowing the Imaculate Heart and Sacred Heart of Mary and Jesus.

Inumerous false prophets, priests, "shamans", "healers", therapists, psychologists etc. try to make their profit. But the only true source for Wisdom and Inner Peace is Insight, Reflection and Connection to the Divine Power within and without you. You don't need anyone specific, only inspiration, relations and experience. It's a hard lifetime work, you won't get it from now to then. Never.

  • Nothing is more subversive to the hustle & consumption culture (capitalism) than the idea of everyone working less and doing nothing more. They don't want anyone undoing what took them hundreds of years to propagandize into the current Taker Culture. Imagine the GDP of the United States after a critical mass of workers decided they only want to work 20 hours per week. Hell, just 4 days instead of 5. It would send economies crashing all over the world. Which would be really good news for climate. Imagine that being coupled with a general desire for less junk. The end of materialism. • I loved Byung-Chui Han's quote in the video, "Burnout is not solely caused by external factors but is exacerbated by our own willingness to participate in this culture of self- exploitation." This is a great (and sorely needed) lesson. How can you tell the ego from the real self? It's easy - the ego, far from its reputation of being merely narcissistic or self-centered, is clenched/closed/protective (that's its job - to protect you) whereas the real self is relaxed/open/at-peace with reality. The ego feels hollow/needy whereas the real self feels fulfilled/satisfied. When acting, the real self is much more likely to fall into the much hyped "state of flow" everyone's talking about these days which is very different from disciplined work.

    • Well said. It's not the "doing" that's the problem, or even the "going someplace else"... it's how you are doing it, are you enjoying the "doing", would you do it for free, and for its own sake? Are you doing it, and going someplace else, knowing that the journey is its own reward? Or are you doing and going because you believe you will be happy once you "get there"? It's all here, it's all now, and once that sinks in you really start to enjoy your doing.

  • This represents a lot of where I am spiritually. I have been engaging in meditation a whole bunch more the last month as a way of letting go, as a way to let what thoughts come happen not to rid myself of them as I don't feel the need anymore to be unsatisfied in the present. I just got back from a sweet holiday from Italy, stayed in a small quiet town a train ride away from the busy streets of Napoli. The bnb I had looked over a beach and could see in the distance vesuvius, pompeii and Napoli and to be honest most my holiday I spent doing nothing but looking out my window or looking out my balcony to this view and let my mind wonder. When I felt like it, I went over to the hussle and bustle of Napoli, but I never ever made myself a plan, maybe try the local pizza once before I left for home but that was it. Marked the trainstation on my map and other than that let myself wonder the streets with the intention of getting lost and finding my way back at the end of the day. Such a liberating trip after the last year working in a constantly busy hotel, a good break from every thought I have about music as I write and record music. I intended this trip to be a break from that so when I got back home I'd naturally get started on recording this project I've finished writing and so far its worked a treat, nothing is forced and I'm far less frustrated about everything. In fact coming back to work at the hotel there's less hesitation in everything I do, for example when a customer was being disrespectful I didn't hold my tongue, I simply let the words out and it worked for the better, of course I didn't act in malice but my mind is at rest for I don't hold anything within the throat. All this to say, let it go. Make intentions rather than plans. Let what happens happen and let that be.

  • In a strange way, the movie "The Big Lebowski," (1998) communicates this message. The main character "The Dude," portraited by Jeff Bridges seems to just "go with the flow". Treating reality like a waking dream. Because in a sense, that's what this all is. A brief, indescribable passing of the present moment. That's why we've got to enjoy the Now. For it is quickly vanishing.

And that is you. The trick is removing the ego that we created which is a false self that exists apart from God. The book shows you how to do it.

  • This is like 3 or 4 different things. 1. Being critical of our culture. 2. Being critical of others morality. 3. Being "spiritual" in the sense we are souls. 4. "Spiritualtiy" in the sense of studying ones own consciousness from within. The truth is those other people who are haters are souls too. Do you feel like a looser? Do they call you a looser? Well why do you even care what this person thinks when You know they are demonstrating a lack of maturity. Since you know you are doing fine, only the presence of personal insecurity would let their perspective over rule yours. So if you are insecure, you should work on that till their perspective has no more power over you. Or get away from these people if possible. I posted 4 things. This would be a 5th one, "paychologizing"... if you sit on a cushion and start working on your insecurity that is working on psychology. Which is fine. But if instead you switch your attention to the bare sensations, that's mediation. Like feeling the softens or coolness of the breath. Or feeling the pain of the insecurity or other qualities. Focusing on the CONTENT of the insecurity is psychology. Not mediation

I like to say, I can't afford to work; I've got to make money! Best way to make money? Passionate play. Certainly not work! If you are going to sell your time (chunks of YOUR life!) for $$. Sell a kidney instead, it's worth less. All it takes is courage. And, a willingness to maybe go without a meal or two, or even a roof over your head. An absolute commitment to freedom over everything else.

  • No matter how many videos one sees about spirituality, fickleness of life, or burnout due pursuing productivity. One will always use these as just another means towards being productive. One rests to be more productive. Meditate to be more productive. Goes for a vacation so that they can recharge themselves and get back to being the workaholic they always were. Only terminal illness will stop them or if they commit suicide, out of the hopelessness one has about their future based on their current unsuccessful life. The day one starts being an ordinary healthy human being who ends up sleeping for over 8 hours, gets good physical work and works for just a few hours without needing to flex their life out in social media on how better they are than most human beings, that's when one can consider one is living life. Then they can ask the most essential question "What the fcuk is this life? Why I'm born and why I'm dying? When everything in this world I do happens with proper motivation, then what is this whole motivation of birth, living and dying? " That is the start of the quest. Then one can pursue meditation in figuring out answers to these questions rather than relying on ancient narratives for these basic questions.
