I recently rebuilt my 8.8 with 4.10 gears using your video as a direct guide. Never did it before, but now my car works a ton better thanks to you. You are awesome.
Man i would kill to be able to work under a lift at least once in my lifetime, been hugging the ground for years, lol
yeah but that's because you're an idiot, not because of the lift
I got a mech buddy who lends me his
Gotta be a great feeling viewing everything that's visible not what's 2 inches from your nose
Step your life up
Ground pounder mechanic right here all day everyday
this is hands down one of the best tech videos I've seen for rear end work. Props for being down to earth and not over technical
Thank you!
Watch EricTheCarGuys 8.8 rebuild series. A lot more realistic, in depth & detail oriented 👍🏼 Props to CJ Pony Parts for this video as well
Yeah this was fonky. He did a lot of it shade tree mechanic style. Which a lot of use would be
"Ideally you should have the pattern a little further down". That's right, so take it apart again and increase the pinion shim thickness. And don't grind the pinion bearing surface. Sorry, but this is the difference between a regular mechanic and a true professional.
He really shouldn't have said anything, that pattern was damn near perfect 😂
We call those Parts Changers. No follow through, no diagnostic skills.
Thanks a lot for the video, instructions were great.Everyone makes things so complicated you guys made it understandable.
My favorite part was when he: !"GROUND THE PINION"! to fit the new pinion bearing.
Emery cloth works too or liquid sand paper lmao
Me too. You can actually see the uneven grinding marks. Well, not everyone is a precision machinist/mechanic. Totally uncalled for.
He didn't grind the pinion... my favorite part of this comment is that you cant tell the difference between a grinding disc and a polishing/gasket cleaning pad.
@@Ares-jx4ep that's a Scotch brite pad. It will remove material. I work in an engine machine shop and seen mechanics ruin cylinder heads with those. They are too aggressive for precision surfaces
@@johnshaff4834 I know what it is and I know how its used. It's too aggressive to clean aluminum with too but I've used then to clean many an aluminum head and block.. but hey, I don't know the mechanics you do.
Also don't take a die grinder to the pinion surface. I lightly scuff with emery cloth to remove the oxide. You want some press fit on the outer bearing so it doesn't spin on the shaft.
I do the same with emery cloth
Yeah and he pried the cover off with a screwdriver and definitely bent it. And he chiseled into the gasket surface. And he is one of those guys that thinks you need to mark an independently balanced driveshaft.
you know your stuff...I enjoy watching
This is an amazingly well put together video. Thanks for this.
One of the better videos on youtube.
"Give yourself the better part of a day". Uh, right.
He said that and I thought, "I'll plan on 2 days." XD
Plan on a month.
Bro, this was awesome to watch. Just got a new subscriber
Always, always, always amazed at how easily stuff comes apart on these instructional videos. I've NEVER been able to remove a pinion seal in good enough shape to reuse it! Unfortunately I live in the real world so my stuff takes a teeny, tiny, tad more elbow grease and grunt work. When rotating the pinion gear after install, you showed 25 on the torque wrench but didn't explain very clearly what that was for. I believe you were showing 25 inch pounds which is pinion bearing preload, or how much effort it takes to turn the pinion after properly collapsing the crush sleeve. Also when showing removal of the C-clips, turn your cap around or remove it so the brim isn't blocking the camera so we can see what was actually happening. I think that's what these instructional videos are for - to see how to do stuff.
This is advertisement bud. And horrible at that.
Also, the shim depth might change on a new pinion and it should be installed without the crush washer and preloaded to do a paint check on proper gear mesh to know if you have to add or remove pinion shims before the crush washer is set permanently.
What would the parts and labor cost be to do this job.?
I'm pretty surprised you let it go like that.. the contact patch definitely should've been adjusted closer to the center of the teeth.
Hacks man. They are everywhere
He let it go with old axel bearings and seals...
Agreed, he didn't want to go through the additional work of re-shimming the pinion.
Didn't shim the pinion, used a die grinder on the pinion shaft, called the contact patch, 'good enough'...
this was one of those "good enough for the camera" install videos. Amazingly got the pinion preload correct first shot 🙄👌🏼 Lookup EricTheCarGuys 8.8 rebuild video for a real life situation. He spent hours upon hours fighting preload & contact pattern issues - he must have had the carrier out of it a few dozen times.
Yup, easy job when you got the right tools needed for the entire any cars, especially hoist and hydraulic lift the entire car to do the job under without mess and too much dirt conveniently for those experienced and eager to have. I like it. Cool......!!!🆒🚘
Very informative! Thanks for posting.
18:20 When you notice your all time favorite ratchet model and get a warm feeling inside. lol Great video. Should be shown as a learning tool.
Great video, thanks for posting, man.
Thanks for watching!
Great video bill, always helpful. Just one thing, the silicon is always preferred to go around from the carrier side rather than the outside or some might have some leaks especially if not cleaned or tightened properly
No press? Emery cloth the pinion, put the freezer. Put bearing in oven @ 400 for 1/2 hour. Stand pinion up, and drop bearing on with tongs. It will slide right down making a cool hissing noise. After using this method I found all kind of cool uses for heat and ice.
Bro I am legit amazed with your Knowledge on cars, so sick. I hardly know anything and am brand new to the car scene but this video was strait epic. Thanks for such awesome content
Great Job👍💪
quite smart explanation
After watching this video (vs a bunch of others) I feel more confident that I can do this myself. Literally only need one tool beside the press which I'll have to take to a shop.
Howd it go?
That is why you don't install the crush sleeve and apply rtv to the companion flange assuming the pattern will be good. The pinion shim may be the same for new gears but unlikely if you want a good pattern. I had to add 7 thou deeper to get a good pattern to the toe and that was with new Ford gears.
Right you want to check pinion depth first right? How do you do that without installing crush sleeve, you just dry fit pinion in and check depth?
Appreciate the insight.
Great job bro👍
Thanks ✌
Great video on the install, nice level of details. One question if someone can answer. The backlash was measured on the ring bolts in thsi video. In the FRPP isntall manual shows the measurement should be taken at the middle part of the ring teeth. Obviously the larger the radius you measure the larger backlash will be measured for the same angular backlash. Therefore it is important to measure on the correct radius.
Cintia Bako
Back-lash is: gap/ slop / free-play ..etc. If you hold pinion and move ring-gear it doesnt matter what you reference on the carrier as it moves with the ring-gear..... Measurement will be the same.
@@allentraylor5659 The measurement will still be larger the further out from axle centerline you measure.
Dude makes it look easy jeez
Back lash is measured at the heel of the ring gear. I wouldn't recommend sanding or filing on pinion so bearings go on easily... Could try warming bearings up in the oven or chilling the pinion with liquid nitrogen or use the press. Great video none the less.
Good job!!! But I did not get the grinding part????in brand new pinion axel?? Could you tell me 3 torque numbers: ring gear bolts? Bearing cap bolts? and last: driveshaft bolts to pinion flange?? Thank you !
Hey I like your style. I’m building an 8.8 for my 85 mustang 347 6 speed with 4:30 gears and a 31 spline ford carrier. I tightened the pinion to 25 inch lbs and when I spin the carrier and ring gear it feels a little tight. Is that normal? Is it true that the bearings will break in and everything will loosen up? Thanks for the help and I like your style installing gears. You seem very confident compared to others I’ve seen. Some videos will drive you crazy if you go their route.
Awesome video Can my 2015 F150 XLT 5.0 with Stock 3.31 gears and axle accept 3.73 or 4.10 ? I want to install a 6” lift and decent size (lg off road tires) I have read from others that my stock gear set up will have drag with the 6” lift and large off road tires 😢
Your truck will have either the Super 8.8 or the 9.75 rear end. Both can accept different gear seats. If the diff cover is symmetrical it is the 8.8, if one side is larger its a 9.75.
Did this with my friend in my one car garage with no experience other than this video, it turned out good, and we even upgraded the carrier axles and driveshaft, would I recommend doing this after experiencing this? No 😂
would it be a good idea to paint the gear before removing the existing ring and pinion? you removed the gears and measured all the shims assuming they were correct. judging by the pattern on the new gears, it seems the pinion depth could be a little off?
Everyone, be prepared to take all day doing this. Good time to replace your wheel bearings also. Carrier bearings never just come off. And getting your spacing right is crucial if you don't want a whine. I always laugh though when people say take your pinion back off and replace the shim. They say the crush sleeve is one time use. If that was true, they wouldn't just give you one sleeve. I've never had a failure from taking the pinion nut/pinion off several times. And a whine usually only last until the gear is worn where it's set. I've did many truck axles where time was an issue so we just slapped stuff back together. Never had a new set of gears break because of a whine, and 1000 miles down the road, the whine isn't noticeable. Besides, when you are use to a major whine in rally cars, a little axle whine is nothing. This job is easy the more you do it. The carrier bearings are the most frustrating part. Doing another axle today.
You seem to know what you’re talking about lol! I have an 8.8 and I cannot seem to get the crush sleeve to crush all the way because there is a lot of resistance when I try to tighten the nut. I had a 2 foot long breaker bar, along with a homemade 1/4” thick steel flange holder and I snapped my homemade flange holder in half trying to crush the new sleeve. Do you have any thoughts/ recommendations for what I should do?
Hey Bill, thanks for the video. Because of this I actually took on the task and rebuilt my 8.8. I was wondering if you guys have a forum of sorts so we can upload photos? I would love your opinion on the gear pattern I'm getting to see if I'm good to put her back together
Juan Acevedo nazarrtvi
Good job
Gostei mesmo foi do seu arsenal de ferramentas!!!
I found if I set backlash, without the carrier torqued, once I torqued it, it would be tighter.and with a pattern like that, I would have thought you'd need to have the backlash a little decreased, it's on the top edge, it looks to me, like it needs to be more centered.
That my friend was a hell of a job you did. Very professional....
Is the backlash the ONLY important measurement for installation? I have seen other videos in the past where powdering the gear is done to look at wear patterns of the pinion against the ring gear. Is that not done anymore?
Hey Bill what size bearing race installer are you using for the inner pinion race?? I have an 81MM (3.18) size and will not fit all the way in and seat. the smaller size down is to small.
good job 👌
Hey Bill, if we are just changing the axles do we need to do all the other steps?
Good job I like it 🎖
Thanks 😁
Good work, Marc Fields should like your explanation too perhaps.
Is the install essentially the same on the 15+ rear gears?
Is installation similar on a 7.5 Rear? I was looking at the title first time around and typed what I saw.
I did this last night in 3 hours. I replaced the factory 3.08 gear with 4.88's in my 94 lincoln town car. Burn Out machine
How it doing now?
guy_incognito look at my channel, couple videos of it
I just installed my 410 gears. I purchased the 75w140 because thags what my tag showed to use. With your last comment , do I not need to use the additive i also bought?? Or should i still add it?
So I noticed on another video you have tighten the pinion down to crush that sleeve. I put mine together watching your video where you don't do that. do I need to take it all back apart and tighten that way down or something?
14:26 - Back-lash. Shoul that not be done at the edge of a tooth? Will give another reading on the nut further inside like here in the video?
That mustang has it's rear fenders rolled? How big wheels did it sport? Guessing like a 315? haha.
what size bearing separator are you using for carrier bearing 3" or 4" or bigger
THANKS GOOD VERY MUCH
no new axle seals or bearings? It almost hurts to see that axle slide into a fresh rebuilt diff on old bears and seals.
nice video
very nice
what's the average cost for a shop to install this?
Damn, this man is a genious
he is not, as a mechanic I can tell you that he is doing a lot of things wrongs such as backlash on a bolt? wtf. grinding where pinion bearing goes? not correcting that bad reading at the end? even worse
Genius = hack.
my carrier shims(1992) were just cast pieces, one on either side. is it okay to reuse them?
magnífica información !!!!!
I don't have a lift. Should I remove the entire rear axle? I think that would be easier
I have a 95 mustang with an 8.8 rear end, the previous owner had Richmond 4.10 gears installed, a few days after buying it I heard chirping, so I put it on the rack and put it in gear to hear where it was coming from. It sounded like it was the U joint connecting the drive shaft to the differential. Changed it, and it wasn't the problem. What could this possibly be? Any help?
Great video! Thanks for doing this. I need to get me one of those torque wrench you used when checking preload. What is that tool called? I only seem to find those cheap torque wrenches with a long needle...
+Eric Öhman Nevermind. Dial type torque wrench seems to be what to search for
I bought 4.10 gears, and the installation kit, but it will not fit a 2014 Mustang GT track pack. The inner pinion bearing didn't fit the housing too small. Even though it didn't specify that in their description. It say it fits all 8.8 rear ends, also had bad customer service, I end up buy the right bearing for another $120 at Ford dealership.
Alvaro Gonzalez you could still use the old bears I do it all the time they last a long time probably removed and install and as long as they stay lubricanted
Great video! Should you run the sealant around the inside or outside (as in the video) of the differential cover bolt holes?
Dave O As long as you use enough it won't matter much but the inside is probably a safer bet
Can you help me here ? The spec for pinion preload, is given for case bearing preload or just the pinion without the differential inside?
This is for positive track correct?
Do you have any suggestions on a video of how to install a C clip eliminator kit?
Dont do it for a street car.
What’s all been done to the mustang performance wise?
I'm installing gears on a car with less than 40k miles do bearings still need to be replaced?
Will this fit my f150 with 8.8 rear end
11:26. That thing was on full tighten 😂😂😂😂
Some ring gear bolts are left hand thread. But no doubt. That thing was screaming.
made me laugh too 🙊
good video,I would like to do a 4.10 in my car but don't know if the time and money justify the end results
+baja5racer1 The right gears totally change the car but they are not cheap or easy to install.
11:22 - Wrong way dude :-)
Did you have to preload the differential?
What sizes are the socket in caps for gt mustang 2008
Bill, could you be more careful about keeping your hat out of the way, There were a couple of times you were explaining how to do something, but all I could see was your hat. Great video! This is not something the average guy would want to do in his home garage (unless you have an experienced friend to look over your shoulder).
What are the rear end bolts torque to
Very interesting video, produced nicely. I am looking to do just a pinion seal on my F-150 with an 8.8 diff. Can I replace the outer pinion bearing while doing the seal with out replacing the race? If not, is it possible to get the race out without popping the 10 bolt cover off? Thanks for putting this video up! Liked and subbed!
jasmwhite1 I know it's late but no you can't take the race out without removing the carrier and if the bearing is damaged the yes you need to replace the race
@@eghty8fox780 even later, I’m a mechanic at a gear and axle shop. Bearing and race are 1 to 1. Can’t replace either or. You must replace both or the new bearings or races will wear horribly
I really see no need for that phony rock background track. It's only a distraction.
I can definitely do this job! Unfortunately, I dont have a press. So, off to the mechanic I go.
Make one. Buy a porta power from harbor freight. Some 1 inch threaded rod and some Chanel iron.
So much work. Def a shop doing this for me when I will need it done lol.
I thought the same until I got a couple prices from local shops. Thousand to 15 hundred to do it. That’s a no thank you
What kind of sway bar is that ! The mounts on it
I have a 2000 gt 5 speed and I noticed that the pinion has much play once I turned the shaft, if I rebuild with new parts what kind of settings do I need don't know much about gears. BY THE WAY GREAT VIDEO
jesus garibay Use the original shims on the pinion and make sure the crush collar is installed properly, that is usually the issue with a lot of pinion play.
Bill Tumas b. yeft33t
Hey Bill, great video and mechanical expertise! In your experience doing this, can you comment on the most common problems a first timer may have in this situation (has had), and what the key problems tend to be with this particular work? I thought I would check, as I have done everything else on cars and trucks, but never worked with the rear differentials; honestly, as people often cautioned to stay away from it. So, on the typical 8.8 mustang rears, what are the worst horror stories you may have heard? I would like to know so that I can hopefully add some more attention in such areas of the gear changing process. Thanks.
It is not a job for a first timer for sure. The thing most people get wrong is setting the backlash. If it is too tight or too lose you will get excessive noise and wear on your gears. Take your time to make sure that is correct.
Bill Tumas , thank you! I can see where it would be all too easy to let a few thousands go on the backlash, get it finished, then run into a world of hurt later on. It certainly seems worthy to prepare and take all the time necessary for this or just pay for the install. I can sure see the need for an accurate dial indicator, and in proper solid placement as well on this. I will be going from 273's to ford racing 410's on my auto. Beyond that, I absolutely appreciate your advice, and thanks for the great video!
Bill Tumas The backlash is detemined and also corrected by adjusting the shim thickness from left to right or vice versa, correct?
Man, that differential carrier came out pretty easy. Mine is tight as hell. I'm worried about prying it too hard damaging it.
Sometimes you get lucky lol
@@cjponyparts My Mustang is fighting me every step of the way. I ended up putting a puller on it, and she eased right out. Same with the stubborn pinion....it needed a puller and a hammer smack.
hey bill i bent one of my axle shafts recently and I'm upgrading them to moser axles in my 2014 gt, do you thing i would have to change the axle bearings as well?
+Dominic Gracia I would replace them
Are those the 03/04 Mach1 wheels or the, American racing nova wheels???
The pattern is one of the most important parts of gear swapping, grinding wtf 🤦🏻♂️!
Hello Can u do a viedio of break system of Mitsubishi FH
Eaton specifically says to not use synthetics with a truetrac. Not only that but it's not even Eaton's recommended weight. Should have went back to 80w-90 petroleum-mineral based GL5.
replaced many a ring and pinion in ford and chevy and every time replace the axle seals ..they are cheap and easy to replace and cheap insurance against seepage. also the shim behind the bearing on pinion you need to get from the old gear set is a must and always told that re using it is perfectly fine if using ford motorsport gears in an 8.8 rear end if using another manufactures gears you need to use pinion depth checking tools as the ford motorsport gears and the oem gears are the same and the shim will hold true to spec .. also one thing noticed when removing the front pinion seal and bearing there was a shim there as well ?? I dont ever remember there being a shim there in any of the rear ends I have ever done ? shims only behind pinion gear bearing and side bearings ? was that shim because of aftermarket carrier ?
one last thing... the factory rear end fluid is synthetic and high quality on low mileage rear end gear changes for friends I have filtered the old fluid with a coffee strainer and put it back in and topped off with new fluid if low.. this is not really being cheap just being practical the fluid will last at minimum 100k miles if not more and does not break down over time just gets dirty as long as you strain it to remove any contaminates it is perfectly fine to re use as long as it is the OEM fluid ... saves you about $60 on the swap .. Also I only replace the bearing on the pinion gear because I will not re use it after it was pressed on or off as it may become distorted if re used.
also do not follow this directions because it is very very incomplete as it does not show the checking gear backlash step or the crush collar for proper preload steps which if you follow only this video you will trash your rear end gears most certainly and watch the beginning he even points out that he is not covering everything and leaving out some shit which is VERY VERY important .. do not use this as your only source for gear change
Usually i setup my pinion preload an 30 incb pounds 25 is a bit loose sinve i will loosen more over time especially if you beat on it alot
My ohv explorer has stock 4.10s. 160HP engine, heavy truck, nothing to write home about, but it has awesome pickup from a stop. Revs quite a bit on the highway though, lucky to see 20- 21 MPG highway. 4.10s aren't made for top speed.
What’s the difference between differential and gears?
How much does he charge for install?
