By now, we understand how Iron Man tricked Thanos in Avengers Endgame, using his own nanobots to absorb the Infinity Stones onto his own hand, leaving Thanos empty handed. However, a new detail spotted in the final minutes of Endgame reveals an even deeper layer to Tony Stark’s genius: EVEN IF Thanos was able to snap a loaded Stark gauntlet with all six stones, still, it would not have worked. Erik Voss explains the huge detail we all overlooked about Stark’s nanotech Iron Gauntlet in Avengers Endgame, what it tells us about Tony’s genius strategy, and how the still-existing gauntlet could be used in future MCU titles like Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). What is the key difference between Thanos’ original Infinity Gauntlet from Avengers Infinity War, and the new red model built by Stark in Avengers Endgame?

  • Erik here! For those wondering why Thanos "lit up" when he put on Stark's gauntlet if the gauntlet was defunct, my theory is that the energy surge comes from the stones, not the gauntlet. We saw this in Infinity War, when Thanos added the Time Stone and the Mind Stone. The surge does not necessarily indicate the gauntlet is "charged" and ready to fire. Therefore, I believe Stark's already-used gauntlet could still *contain* the stones, but not *execute* them. Where do you think we'll see Tony Stark's gauntlet appear next in the MCU?

  • My theory is that the glove’s material is too weak in comparison to that of the original in infinity war, hence it wouldn’t be able to be used a second time after withstanding a snap. I don’t know if stark really found a way to make it single use, instead the result of the material being too weak was just a happy consequence.

  • *The two Gauntlets* Etri's Gauntlet is based on "Asgardian" magic. The Nanotech Gauntlet is based on science, from Stark, Rocket and Banner. No way to answer simplistic question as to which one is 'better' but they are *very different.* Etri's Gauntlet responds to Thanos and Thanos will alone. Etri works with Uru metal. Uru's defining characteristic is that it is sensitive to magic. This is also the basis of Thor's hammer, Thanos sword, Gamora's sword (called GodSlayer), and Thanos armor...all magical in character. The nanotech gauntlet is not magic. It is science. It is rooted in Shields original study of the space stone, which led to Iron Man's development of Repulsor tech, as well as Banner and Stark's study of the mind stone. This is what led to Vision. Vision is at root Stark and Banner's AI, housed in a Vibranium suit of armor and interfacing with the mind stone. Rocket is likewise a weapons making genius (that's his super power) and has access to and knowledge of advanced weapons tech from throughout the Galaxy. The Gauntlet is not a weapon itself. The power is in the stones. The function of the gauntlet is to protect the gauntlet bearer from the stones. When Thanos makes a fist - he maximizes the ability of the Etri Gauntlet to protect the gauntlet bearer and protect itself. He is able to use a single stone repeatedly in this way without hurting himself or damaging the gauntlet. However when all the stones are used to snap it badly damages the Gauntlet possibly fusing it to his hand. After the second snap the gauntlet appears to be rubbish - but it's possible [likely] that Rocket took it with them back to earth. We don't know if Stark's Gauntlet can enable using a single stone while making a fist or not. We do know that the Gauntlet was badly damaged by the snap. The most important feature of the science based gauntlet is nanotech. Nanites are microscopic artificially intelligent robots that communicate cybernetic-ally with the user and assemble and reassemble into different forms. Stark's entire Mark 85 armor is nano-tech and moreover was designed to function as an armor to protect him while housing the an infinity stone (ie - like Vision). Since Stark could not get the stones off of the magical Thanos Gauntlet (and Dr. Strange realized having seen the future as some viewers refuse to accept - that he *never was* going to get the Gauntlet from Thanos), he spent 5 years agonizing over what he might have done differently. Conceptually the nano Gauntlet was his answer: *If you can't get the Gauntlet away from Thanos - then get the stones off the Gauntlet.* If you still don't see this - then note that the Armor Stark used to fight Thanos on Titan was the Mark 50. The Gauntlet Armor is Mark 85! 5 years, 35 revisions in armor. Think about it.😎

    • I think with both the Uru gauntlet and the Nano one they are designed to control the power of the stones. In other words, if they were improperly designed or sabotaged in some way, the stones might not do what the user wants them to. So, even with the Nano gauntlet lighting up and stuff, there's no telling what it can actually do.

  • Reason for making Gauntlet like flexible for sweeping the stones is due to fight of Infinity war, if you remember they were trying to pull it back but now they don't need to remove gauntlet simply get the stones and kabooom

  • Sometimes I think you go way off on small details, making a universe out of a ant, but then other times I think you can tell the future and are right on. This is one of those times that I think you are right, all the points your bring up that makes this possible seem way too good to pass up on.

  • I thought the gauntlets only function was to absorb some of the energy so the user doesnt get vaporized holding all the stones at once. I would think no matter what the stones are in you can still use them you just might get vaporized instead of just fried.

  • This did just give me an idea I wish we could have seen. So, in the final battle in Endgame, I would have loved to have seen someone like Ebony Maw or Corvus Glaive pick up the gauntlet and try to use it. But then they basically melt away. A “call-back” to when Thor told Starlord that their “bodies would crumble as (their) minds collapsed into madness”.

  • i believe that it wouldve worked because I mean A) all the stones lit up and the energy surged through thanos and B) the stones would work in any gauntlet and like i said they were activated and thanos had that power so since they still activated it was still completely possible. I dont think Tony could even find a way to STOP the stones from working. Im just still caught up on Thanos not realizing the glove was empty after tony took the stones
