It’s an amount of money that’s truly mind-boggling. The largely unregulated world of wellness is estimated to be worth $7 trillion. Remarkably, it’s three times more than the traditional pharmaceutical industry. And Australia is leading the charge in the wellness boom. Living among us are an increasing number of new-age gurus who believe, for an often very healthy price, they can fix our many real and imagined ailments. They claim things like coffee enemas, carnivore diets, intravenous drips, even vagina-scented candles will provide much needed zest for users.
On 60 MINUTES, Tom Steinfort realigns his chakras and sets forth on an eye-opening journey to discover if the wellness craze is giving us a new lease on life or is just an easy way to empty our wallets.

  • I went carnivore 4 months ago. It wasn’t hard, I wasn’t starving and staring at the scale anymore. I no longer had to feel guilty for not liking vegetables. The carbs and sugar cravings passed and my weight is steadily going down and many of my health issues are gone. Even my dentist was impressed. I’ve never felt and looked this good and my labs are great. My only regret is that I didn’t find this lifestyle earlier. I’ll be 60 this year and feel wonderful.

  • ok, for 13 years, I watched my husband go from doctor to doctor to medication to remedy and nothing helped. He had so many different issues and could barely walk. He questioned why he was staying alive almost every day. About 6 months ago, he went on the carnivore diet and in that period of time has lost 80 lbs, no longer has sleep apnea, sleeps well at night, has energy, an even-keeled emotional life and is finally himself. I don't know if plants want to kill you or not, but I can definitely say that at least for him, carnivore diet is not a fad or trend, it literally saved his life.

    • As a scientist, the recent research on Intermittent Fasting proves only one thing ...... A few people lose weight on it because it helps stop them eating extra calories. Home broth is hardly something new ..... It has been used for hundreds of years to feed people who are recovering from illness. It does not have miracle results. The Jewish idea of "chicken soup" works the same way as bond broth. By the way, bone broth is often called consomme. Opioids are useful for people who genuinely require pain relief to function ...... And when they are kept at low doses. Carnivore is useful as an initial elimination diet. If you suffer from certain conditions like IBS, the foot cause may be anxiety ... Or it may be a particular food group. Remember something virtually all the doctors pushing strange or restrictive diets ..... Are MAKING MONEY. I once was at a medical conference which was attended by a famous Carnivore follower ..... And witnessed him eating both fruit and bread. A couple of us questioned him ..... He grinned and pointed at his expensive sports car ..... "My followers paid for that". There is absolutely no secret to healthy lifestyle. Eat a varied whole foods diet and avoid take away and ready meals. Limit alcohol. Don't smoke. A little exercise. You don't need vitamin supplements unless your bloods have specifically shown issues.

  • Since posting this story, 60 Minutes Australia has changed the title of this video 3 times. From “Carnivore diet and other wellness myths busted” to “Is your diet making you sick” and as of this post, “Extreme diets and health trends people are swearing by”. I looked through about 50 top comments on this story, all of which from what I could tell, we’re talking about the carnivore diet in a positive light. Calling it a “myth” was a misstep obviously. Also the first title appeared to focus mainly on the carnivore diet. Carnivore doesn’t get talked about until the 12 minute mark and is covered for less than 5 minutes in a 28 minute story. I believe every lifestyle, even the ones I believe in, are deserving of scrutiny. However I believe they did a poor job of covering this lifestyle that was lumped in with vagina scented candles, IV drips and social media moguls who over price supplements. I understand it’s hard to cover carnivore in less than 5 minutes but the framing of the story wasn’t done well. You don’t need to buy anything extra to be carnivore other than changing your foods purchases. If anyone tells you so that is misleading.

    • Glad you were so observant as I avoid mainstream media, because to me it’s just propaganda and the advertisers are always the ones being protected for fear of losing advertising revenue (which is understandable - but contrary to impartial informative constructive journalism). Actually, to even call what they produce now journalism is an insult to the trade. Your depictions are spot on and I’m glad you highlighted these important points. Media (even ABC and SBS) are all what I call “western propaganda”, hence why I want nothing to do with it and this is why I only found out about this 60 minutes article today. 60 minutes should be ashamed of putting together such trash. Nevermind, could we actually expect any better? Actually, from 60 minutes, I did expect a higher more informative look at what the health benefits are. It’s a missed opportunity. Perhaps they are worried about Big Pharma being upset! Excellent comment by the way.

    • Yes! that pesky archeological and sociological evidence proving humans only started eating absurdly large quantities of red meat in the mid 20th century thanks to the birth of the factory farming industry aided by the pharma industry pumping animals full of synthetic hormones and antibiotic resulting in the average age of female puberty in western countries dropping from 13.8 to 11.3 in less than 50 years is nothing compared to not farting anymore! And ya know we should all put out of our mind that in medieval Europe the average diet was about 90% fucking vegan because no one but royalty could afford meat and dairy since all the meat in the country was always at that one oppulent banquet for the king and yet white people did not go extinct, it's just a blip in history! Let's also forget that most of India is vegetarian and has been for millenniums, and it's not like they have a billion people surviving on a meat-free diet! NO! Homo sapiens were meant to be carnivorous, that's why over milions of years we didn't evolve to have those big cumbersome teeth called "incisors" between our sets of canines and instead we have just those tiny little teeth like a cat or a dog... Oh, wait... Give me a break y'all are feeling great because your livers are getting rest from not processing crap carbs since it's the kidney's that filter out protein. That's basic shit you learn in the 9th grade. But guess what? Proteins are hard on the kidneys and those can shut down like that so I guess another couple of years and you guys can all have fun talking about it three times a week during dialysis! 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

When I was on a sad diet and later on vegetarian, I got so sick! It was terrible. I had diabetes 2, lost my father with this and refuse to end like he did! No! I won't swallow 20 pills a day, live a miserable life and be blamed it's my own fault by doctors who tell a diabetic to have sugar in masses and just adjust with the right amount of insuline... No! • I tried the carnivore diet back in 2017 when I first heard Jordan Petersen doing it. I did it for about 6 months. Felt great, got to a healthy weight, and got rid of symptoms of certain things I was told I would just have to live with. After about 6 months I finally caved into all the people telling me it was going to lead to a lot of health issues and went back to the standard american diet. That was a huge mistake. I gained all the weight back, symptoms of auto immune issues came back, and I just felt crappy again. I should have never listened to all the nay sayers that don't even know what they are talking about. I started again in 2022, but got labs done by my doc before starting. After 6 months on carnivore I got my labs done again and the results were great. My doc told me I reduced my all mortality rate by 72%, I got into a healthy weight range again, and feel fantastic. No more listening to the machine that profits from me eating cheap to produce carbs/junk food. I will be sticking to this diet as long as the health benefits continue, which I am guessing will be the rest of my life.

  • This is my story and experience with eating carnivore. I apologize in advance because it will be really long. Let's first go back to March 2015. Prior to this I ate my share or processed foods and I had a heavy smoking habit. I wasn't healthy, I didn't feel great, but I wasn't ill and suffering. But in March 2015 that slowly started to change. I went in late one night with pain in my side and it turned out I had appendicitis. They didn't do my surgery until the morning and sometime in the night it had ruptured, I got gangrene and they had to take out a fourth of my colon. I was in the hospital for a week (and later three days for complications), and during almost that entire week I wasn't allowed nothing by mouth, not even water. I'm very thirsty, and not being able to drink was so awful for me that I completely forgot about smoking, which allowed me to get past the four day mark where I always failed when trying to quit. So I quit smoking, quit coffee (because it would make me want to smoke), and I cleaned up my diet. Cut out processed foods and started eating LOTs of fruits and vegetables. I was trying to lose weight, get healthy and strong, and basically just become a way better version of myself. I also started getting more active with lots of walking and exercising three to four days a week. But for some reason I just kept getting more and more tired. I started bloating. I just didn't feel good, and the more time that went by the worse I felt. Six months down the road I was in severe shape. I could barely walk a block, had to sit down and take breaks after showering or in the middle of grocery shopping. I went back to the doctor and was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. My TSH was 48, which is extremely high, and my triglycerides were over 1000, which is terribly high. But I had a diagnosis and a prescription, and I was so relieved, thinking that I had the solution to all of my issues. And yes, some issues were resolved as I got my thyroid levels in range, but some things just kept getting worse, like bloating, and while I wasn't AS exhausted I still was very low energy. I chugged along the next five years but I just felt worse and worse. I kept eating healthy, and I tried to keep as active as a could, but I was just exhausted, and terribly bloated. The bloating just got worse and worse. I was never not bloated. I would wake up about 6-months-pregnant-bloated and by late evening I was 11-months-pregnant bloated. By late evening it would hurt into my back and shoulders and I couldn't stand sitting up and would have to get in bed. And no matter what time of the day, if I bent over to pick something up I couldn't breath at all, because the bloating just squished everything too badly. At about the 5 year mark was when COVID hit. I'm overweight, inflamed, high cholesterol (yes, even though I was eating low fat and lots of vegetables), and basically I was a poster child for having a severe case if COVID if I caught it. About this same time my A1C came back 5.6. Technically "normal", but it's just 0.1 away from being prediabetic, which also greatly increases your chance of dying from COVID. I only see PAs, no doctor, and none of them had been of any help, even though I told them I was suffering so badly that even the idea of living to 60 in this state was unthinkable. So when I got my results for my A1C I took to Google to see what to do about it. I ran across Dr. Sten Ekberg who explained insulin resistance the benefit of a low carb diet. Insulin resistance seemed to be accurate for me so I decided to try low carb. Let me just back up a minute and also mention that in 2002 I was diagnosed with bipolar II, and for the last several years had suffered from near-constant depression and anxiety. I also had a plethora of other symptoms like skin issues, pain, severe acid reflux, and 10 straight years of nothing but liquid stools, no exaggeration. There were other lessor symptoms, but it's hard to remember it all now. Now let me say that I did have some benefits going low carb. I lost weight for the first time in 20 years, which I had started to think was impossible for me. And my bloating reduced to a level I could at least stand. I had an increase in energy. I was still tired, but I was no longer too tired to shower and I didn't have to take breaks while grocery shopping. I also had some improvements in my acid reflux, I had less anxiety and depression, and I just suffered less in general. I ate this way for a year, but that was the extent of my improvements. I was still bloated, I was still tired, I still had all of my issues, even though some of them were improved a decent bit. But I really wanted to stop suffering completely. I was 49 and I didn't want to suffer for the rest of my life. During my year of keto I of course followed a lot of other people, both experts like Dr. Berry and Dr. Ekberg and just others who were sharing their journey. And I kept hearing from people about carnivore, especially in the comment section. Now I thought this was crazy. We NEED fiber and vegetables, right? So I just ignored it at first. But eventually I decided it was worth a shot, especially after hearing so many people talking about the great improvements they'd had in their health. If it didn't work I could always go back to eating vegetables. And I had heard people also say that it had put their bipolar and other mental health disorders in remission, but I didn't have any hope for that with me. I mainly wanted to get rid of my bloating, exhaustion, and if I was lucky maybe my liquid stools. So in August 2021 I went carnivore. Within a month my bloating was all but gone, my energy levels were equal to when I was in my 30s, my pain was gone, my acid reflux was gone, and I started having multiple days in a row where I wasn't anxious and/or depressed. Within two months my skin issues were cleared up, acid reflux was gone, and I continued to see improvements in my energy, strength, and a continued reduction in my anxiety and depression. After three months I had my first solid poo!!! I had really started to lose hope that carnivore would rid me of my liquid stools, so when I had my first solid one I was SO excited! I've been carnivore for two years this August and it literally gave me my life back. Not only do I no longer have anxiety or depression without reason (obviously life events can still make me a big anxious or sad), I've recently started noticing that my life-long phobia of bees and wasps is just about reversed. It was a true phobia and I couldn't spend much time outside. That's not something I expected for sure. I also used to be a really bad procrastinator and now I'm not. I don't fully understand it, but eating carnivore didn't just heal by digestive system and my body, it's healing my mind. It might not be for everyone, but for some of us it's nothing short of a miracle.

  • I started carnivore on Oct 24, 2022. This is going to be my second birthday! After five days, I woke up for the first time in 15 years without pain in every single joint. After 10 days, I felt lighter and realized that I had been swollen all over my body for as long as I can remember & I wasn’t inflamed any longer. After 2 weeks, I had my first day without brain fog for the first time in 15 or 16 years. After 6 weeks, my triglycerides were normal for the first time ever! Since then I have reduced my protonix for GERD by half TWICE (was 40 mg BID, now 20 mg SID) and I feel like I can and will eliminate it completely, I’ve lost about 25 lbs so far, my cycles are no longer painful (had been considering surgery for endometriosis), and I have cured diverticulitis & IBS, and put Lyme disease, fibromyalgia, and chronic fatigue into remission. ANA titer is now negative. I had previously tried low fat, whole 30, candida diet, gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, juicing, plant-based, medical-supervised calorie restriction… it wasn’t until I cut out sugar, artificial sweeteners, starches, AND FRUITS & VEGETABLES that I finally found relief. I wish it didn’t take so long to find it.

Whole grains and all grains are the number one “healthy” driver of these epidemics because………….. they are SUGAR in your body. Add some “healthy” fruits to your diet and watch your belly expand and your blood sugar become uncontrolled. I’d love to get a look at his labs and compare them to mine, a 58 year old Carnivore. I bet my labs look better than his.

You’ll stop when you’re diabetic or diagnosed with cancer. The claim that there is little evidence of eating Carnivore is just completely false. At the very earliest, humans began farming about 10-12k years ago. For millions of years humans were hunter-gatherers and ate the fatty meats of animals before they ate anything else. Any paleontologist will tell you that the larger size and growth of our brains came from us eating animals. I haven’t seen any paleontologists who disagree with the scientific research regarding that fact. Even simple google research into the aboriginal population of Australia shows 40,000+ years of the carnivore diet. But, I’m not here to change your mind about your diet. • We don’t get to hear from “ex carnivore dieters” much so here goes: I tried the carnivore diet for 11 months. Was very strict, salt and pepper on steak for lunch and dinner. Bone broth for breakfast. I used cow lard for butter . I did it to lose weight and help with my immune system, where I have a rare form of arthritis , palindromic, since I was 20. I was mid thirties. Although I started out losing weight, I slowly started to gain and it wasn’t stopping. I dealt with it, maybe that how I was supposed to look. But what I couldn’t deal with was the constipation and/or diarrhea , and huge painful gastro “popping” in my belly all night long. It just wasn’t working for me, but I tried. So it’s not a one size fits all, but I don’t doubt that it could be helpful for some people. I quit and had a wonderfully balanced and reasonable relationship with food ever since. I get full faster, I don’t yo-yo. So it helped in that way! But I’m better off of it. Just wanted to add my experience so people don’t consider it a miracle cure- helps some but not all.

Instead of going to a clinic to take the rabies vacc!ne3, she started to “detox” her body with vegetables and fruits juices. I was SHOCKED! I kept reporting her video for disinformation. She is a nut job.

There is a hormonal element to acne, but their are easy ways to balance hormones and have less acne. It is a very painful and self-conscious time as a teenager, having a zit is the end of the world.

  • I am so happy i found the "no carb" way of eating, a/k/a carnivore way of eating. I am 68 and feel younger, have more energy, am less grouchy and have a better outlook on life. I started to help with inflammation after a medical procedures on my back. So far, 6 weeks in, it is helping with that plus all the other benefits and I dropped 6 pounds and look better. I studied the no carb diet under no less than 10 medical docs, including a heart surgeon, a kidney doc, several board certified docs, Phd, etc. who all work with patients. The docs themselves did the diet. Not one had poor outcomes and in fact all showed health improvements. I may add some plant foods later, but will remain low carb.

  • For about 10 years I've had an issue with my fingernails lifting and crumbling. Fungal nail infections were ruled out early on and my dermatologist decided it was either distal onychosis or nail psoriasis. I was told only my only options were to live with it or trial medication for psoriasis. I didn't want to risk the nasty side effects of the psoriasis medication, so decided to just live with it. Three months ago, I heard about the carnivore diet and how it's the ultimate elimination diet. Something clicked in my brain that perhaps my nail condition was related to my diet - standard "healthy" food pyramid diet. The logic behind the carnivore diet made complete sense, so I decided to give it a go. Now three months in and my nail condition is almost completely gone! It's like a miracle after putting up with this for 10 years!!! I no longer have the worry of people thinking I have a fungal nail condition. I believe my nail condition was the result of an autoimmune response to something plant based in my diet (I did eat a lot of plants). Joint pain I started getting over the past year or so has also completely gone. Other benefits being full carnivore include better mood, stable energy levels and mental clarity. Thank you Dr Chaffee, if only could have a full 60 minutes on this show!

Even though I didn't WANT to think about it and knew I would never do it, I couldn't shake the thoughts. Carnivore fixed all of this. I now suspect these symptoms were mostly due to systemic inflammation (esp. in my brain). Can confidently say all my issues are in the past so long as I stay carnivore.

It's still an open question with regard to cardio vascular disease. I think we will find out in coming years. Currently all we have is theory, and seems like convincing theory but that doesn't always pan out once studies are conducted. The human body is incredibly complex so we can't always account for everything that's going on. We need LONG term studies on this diet.

Five or six years ago my wife wanted to try Keto so we both went low carb (20g or less most days) then I naturally moved to high fat carnivore. At 57, I haven’t felt this good since my 20’s, take no medications, have no inflammation, can literally jump out of bed in the morning with no stiffness. LDL is higher than my doctor wants but then there’s nothing wrong with high LDL (I think he’s forced to say that). I’m never hungry and when I am I eat as much as I want. 😊

And when people wake up and try to claw their way back to health, that is seen as a "radical" move, they are seen as the weird ones for opting out of the death-machine that is currently our food industry. If people took more than just a cursory glance at some of these health practices and used their discernment and intelligence, instead of broad-stroking it all as "wacky" (It is a given that some practices are stupid i.e Vagina Candles) then you can find great benefit and map your way out of the death-spiral that a lot of people are in when it comes to health and food choices.
