  • One of the best things about this scene is the fact Stay Puft wasn't in the movie trailer at all so it was a total surprise. These days with every movie having about a dozen trailers you can pretty much plot out the entire movie by watching them.

    • A lot of us who grew up with the movie as kids took it seriously, that Ghostbusting was a profession. It wasn't a comedy, it was real for us. It also allowed kids to play as Ghostbusters in the school yard. Instead of facing off against each other, they worked together against invisible ghosts. That's what it was so great about Ghostbusters. It was played straight. Even something as silly as a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man showing up because it was a random thought was real. It could actually happen, because random thoughts did this.

    • You should try hunting down a one-shot comic published by IDW 5-6 years back called Ghostbusters Deviations. Here's the outline from the GB wiki:- In an alternate timeline, the Ghostbusters chose not to cross the streams. The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man took over Manhattan and coated the city in its marshmallow-like substance. To make matters worse, it expelled sentient poop dubbed Mini Pufts. Gozer was not pleased with being bound to the form of Stay Puft. It was disturbed by the sound of its voice, having its expression stuck in a smile, and being adorable. It found the only thing as tall as it were trees and buildings and became lonely. It was a nightmare. The Stay Puft form was bound to this dimension and Gozer was bound to the Stay Puft form. It wanted to go back to its home dimension, thus liberating itself from the form, but could not do so by itself. Stay Puft walked to the Firehouse and peeked through the hole in the ceiling at the Ghostbusters, greeting them a "Hey, guys. What's up?" The Ghostbusters responded by shooting at them. He spit on them. Seven and half minutes later, the Ghostbusters finished processing what Gozer wanted. They agreed to help but refused to cross the streams. An hour later, Egon and Ray thought of releasing and recruiting Tempore Ruga, a ghost with the power to fold time. At first, Tempore wasn't interested in helping then Winston pointed out the world was ruled by Stay Puft. Tempore quickly changed his mind.

The noises Stay Puft makes as well as the sinister smile combined with an angry expression ensures that you do in fact take it seriously. You can see why Reitman initially was on edge about Stay Puft. Also in adulthood, unless it's just me, even as an adult, when Gozer is talking fast, I never really understood word for word what she said, as an adult, you still have to strain, I am surprised that wasn't dealt with in '84. I would love to see the "big guy" back in 'Afterlife'. I know I am also pushing my luck, but I would love to see The Real Ghostbusters version of the Containment Unit in film version as opposed to cartoon.

The rustle of the clothes and the equipment they're wearing, their footsteps all of it and it just feels more real than modern movies somehow. Possibly because it's not put through 7 dozen filters Also the crowd running away somehow seems more authentic. Sporadic, random directions, people falling over, people staring, people screaming. It's more realistic than everyone just running away towards the camera.

    • I believe in the commentary, they kept the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in because the test audiences went wild every time this scene happened. So, yeah, I could only imagine. It's been a long while since I've gone through that commentary though.

    • Yep. It sure was. The '80s were awesome. Most of the last 30 years has sucked big time. And then there was 2020 and 2021. Can't wait to see what's coming up next. See you on the other side, Ray.

  • The mini Stay Puffs in Afterlife are cute and playful in a devilish tone. Ghostbusters is one of the greatest comedy films alongside Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy and The Big Lebowski.

    • Actually Ray saved the group. If they had all imagined 'nothing', then a void of nothingness would have popped into existence and annihilated everything. But instead Ray thought of a giant creature that was clumsy and would take time to reach them.

  • If he had chosen any other way it wouldn't be as scary as this. The fact that something that should be something good turns into something evil is what makes Stay Puft so creepy, it's like Chucky the killer doll.
