My cousin took her own life a couple months ago. The day it happened I drove to the beach in Clearwater , FL and listened to this song on repeat, crying harder than I ever knew I could. We were always at the beach as kids and often drove to the beach together when we were teenagers and in our early 20’s. I remember making a promise on the beach in Oregon that we were gonna ride this wave together, when we both were experiencing horrible depression. The line “I’d spend the rest of my life just standing here talking,” absolutely breaks me. What I’d do for one more walk on the beach with you, Leah.

I’ve always loved her live performances better than her studio versions. I feel like Miley is one of Hollywood’s most authentic artists.. and the ones now, only release music for the sake of releasing music versus something like this. Music no longer becomes an art but a platform used to promote some form of (self) political agenda. Every time I watch Miley.. Jolene (garden sessions cover), her Malibu (live performances), and now “Slide Away”.. I wish we could get more people like her. I feel like a lot of people shit on Miley for things that aren’t even that terrible (in comparison to the stories that Hollywood/popular entertainment outlets have tried to cover up) while being painted the false image of a “whore” in today’s society when in reality, she’s only loved 1 person for the last 10 years and in spite of all the partying, the controversy- she remained loyal. Ive always loved Miley. Watched her on tv, watched the movie “Hannah Montana” as soon as I heard about it.. and always listened to everything she’d put out. Her skill in performing is jaw dropping and she’s an expert at her craft. I hope more artists get discovered that show more heart than false fronts, for the sake of retaining/maintaining a certain public image. It’s so crazy how much of a stark difference “Slide Away” is in comparison to this. I love how she remained the lyricist for both songs.. that’s why “Slide Away” is so heartbreaking, it’s a complete foil written for its alternative (Malibu), had things continued for them.
