12 Ways to Annoy the Dutch
Hello everyone, and welcome to my channel. Today I’m talking about “12 Ways to annoy the Dutch”. We will be exploring the quirks of the Dutch culture and how it influences people in the Netherlands daily.
The Dutch are known for their love of organization and efficiency; however, they also have certain things they don't particularly enjoy or take part in due to cultural reasons.
So, if you have ever been interested in learning more about what doesn't make your traditional dutchman tick, stick around - this is going to be an interesting journey!
1. Not being punctual
Everyone knows about the Dutch and their love for punctuality. It's common knowledge that if you don't show up on time in The Netherlands, you'd better watch out! If there is one sure fire way to annoy a Dutch person, it is by not being punctual. It is surely one of the sure-fire ways to annoy the Dutch.
The Dutch are known for their adherence to schedules and finding someone cutting it close or running late can be enough to drive them mad. Whether at business meetings or social gatherings, being on time isn't just encouraged-it's expected. Don't even think about showing up two minutes after the appointed time because you might as well have been two hours late instead!
2. Small talks
One of the easiest ways to annoy the Dutch is to do small talks. While it might be commonplace in other cultures, the Dutch prefer to skip straight to the point and avoid chit chat as much as possible. So, if you start blabbering on about something inane while they are expecting an answer - get ready for some serious side-eye!
The truth is that small talk can be seen by many Dutch people as shallow and time consuming - two things they don't appreciate very much at all. They would rather discuss more substantial topics instead of wasting time talking about the weather or recent happenings in celebrity gossip magazines.
Small talk isn't conducive to meaningful conversations and just doesn’t fit with their values of efficiency and directness; it's perceived as idle chatter that has no real purpose or value.
3. Don’t flaunt
Now anyone familiar with Dutch culture knows they're all about keeping it simple and humble. So, it's no surprise that when someone comes around bragging and making a show of themselves, they are less than impressed. It seems like such behaviour goes against their traditional values of modesty and hard work over extravagance.
Plus, Dutch people don't like feeling as if someone is trying out compete them or make them look bad by comparison - so needless to say flaunting is a sure-fire ways to annoy the Dutch.
So, remember: If you want to fit in next time, you head over to Deutschland - keep calm, be humble, and avoid any actions which could be perceived as 'Vuilspelen'(being obnoxious).

Zwarte piet is actually not considered a 'Christmas' figurine. It may seem so, since 'pakjesavond' (unpack/boxing day?) is in the same month (5th of december). However, we consider this a very different feast and it has no relation to Christmas at all. When googling, I am suprised even National Geographic got this fact wrong.
Punctuality: Yeah... be on time. And this extends to both time sides. Don't be late... but don't be early either. 4 am is 4 am, not 3:50 am, not 4:05 am.However, we are also far more lenient with people if they have a valid excuse not to be on time. In "certain countries" (cough cough America cough cough) you can be fired because you weren't on time since your car got hit by another car and you are now in the hospital. That won't happen here. Small talks: Do I know you and am I on friendly footing with you.. small talk all you want. Are you a random that is selling me a pair of pants in a shop... keep the small talk to your friends. Yes, the weather sucks.. no I haven't seen the latest episode of NCIS... just give me my frigging pants. Flaunting: Famous Dutch saying " Doe normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg" which translates to "Act normal, then you're acting crazy enough" Confusing us with Danes: No problem, just know that in that case we obviously are the Great Danes. But I have to say I never encountered this. I have seen "certain nationalities" (cough cough Americans cough cough) confuse Austrians with Australians and v.v. though Lying: I assume this is about Dutch Directness, And It is much more than "don't lie". It is about saying what you mean, not what you think we want to hear or trying not to offend us. Don't ask me about me day if you are not ready to hear about my day. Football: Just like in England or Spain... there is a certain group of "fans" that is toxic.. most Dutch can however deal with some friendly banter. Now... if you start talking smack about Max Verstappen however... different story (but that might just be me) Waisting time: See punctuality, small talk, and lying. Visiting unanounced: Are you a friend or family... my door is "open". Are you not in that groupp... call first. As for "the Dutch plan visits weeks in advance... bullcrap.. at least among friends and family. There are places where they don't mind peeple cutting lines? Tell me where so I can avoid those places please. Comparing us to other countries: Go ahead, we come out on top any day of the week. Being overly friendly: see Lying and wasting time Zwarte Piet: Tip.. Piet is pronounced the same as Pete. And talking about this... don't do it, we are struggling with the subject enough already. We do not need the rightous comments of people from countries that are way more racist than Black Pete will ever be. That said, personally I am in favor of some change ragrding the figure. Sadly there are two fringe groups of people on both sides that keep blocking every solution. One group refuses to ditch the concept of just Black, the other group ditches the concept of all colors imaginable taking skin color out of the equation. The solution is simple but extremists on both side make it impossible. A 13th way to annoy many Dutch is insisting it is called Holland even if you know better.
