LYRICS
If it weren't for your maturity none of this would have happened
If you weren't so wise beyond your years I would've been able to control myself
If it weren't for my attention you wouldn't have been successful and
If it weren't for me you would never have amounted to very much
Ooh this could be messy
But you don't seem to mind
Ooh don't go telling everybody
And overlook this supposed crime
We'll fast forward to a few years later
And no one knows except the both of us
And I have honored your request for silence
And you've washed your hands clean of this
You're essentially an employee and I like you having to depend on me
You're a kind of my protégé and one day you'll say you learned all you know from me
I know you depend on me like a young thing would to a guardian
I know you sexualize me like a young thing would and I think I like it
Ooh this could get messy
But you don't seem to mind
Ooh don't go telling everybody
And overlook this supposed crime
We'll fast forward to a few years later
And no one knows except the both of us
I've more than honored your request for silence
And you've washed your hands clean of this
What part of our history's reinvented and under rug swept?
What part of your memory is selective and tends to forget?
What with this distance it seems so obvious?
Just make sure you don't tell on me especially to members of your family
We best keep this to ourselves and not tell any members of our inner posse
I wish I could tell the world cause you're such a pretty thing when you're done up properly
I might want to marry you one day if you watch that weight and keep your firm body
Ooh this could be messy and
Ooh I don't seem to mind
Ooh don't go telling everybody
And overlook this supposed crime

    • Same here... I was a VERY sheltered 14-year old when this album came out (2002), and while I LOVED that album overall (and it holds up incredibly well, to tis day) - the lyrics to this particular just flew over my head, and while it's obviously a blessing that it wasn't something I could instantly relate to and understand back then... I'm also sad that I didn't understand what she was really trying to say. I also didn't have cable TV (and KZhead didn't exist until 2006, for any younger gens reading this lol), so I also didn't see the music video until Covid happened - which I'm sure would've opened my eyes a bit more to how dark the song actually was... but because I didn't see that, I just didn't "get" the song - in fact, I remember feeling weirded out about it because I took the song at face-value and thought she was singing from her own pov about a relationship with a younger man (I didn't pick up on the p*do implications in the song, so I thought she was singing about some younger man in a more... really creepy, shallow, immature, power-dynamic-sounds-like-a-lawsuit-about-to-happen kind of way that still made me wildly uncomfortable all on its own), which VERY much confused me because that _seemed_ so out-of-character for her...? But, yeah... the backstory and real meaning of the song was just totally lost on HS freshmen me, unfortunately, so I almost always skipped this song... I feel really bad about how I misinterpreted that song (and, by extension, her character) now, even though I was wise enough to kept those _very_ unverified assumptions to myself (in fact, this is the first time I've ever said any of that to literally anyone). Literally 20 years later and finally knowing what I know about it now, this song is *_incredibly_* well done.

    @bayarangiyotero4648@bayarangiyotero46482 жыл бұрын
    • i mean, is that really true for you? Right Through You was a scathing no-holds-barred indictment, Hands Clean is a fairly passive-aggressive confession. it packs one of of my favorite punches, but i wouldn't view the latter to be more 'mature' than the former, psychologically speaking. screaming the monkey off your back certainly feels better than a decade of therapy about what you subtly slipped in under a pristine pop radar. the melody tho? oh god yes. i think Hands Clean is one of pop music's most underrated true gems.

    • A more detailed story: It is about Alanis' relationship with her former manager, Leslie Howe. Alanis was 14 and he was 29. He manipulating her into thinking that if she slept with him, she would become famous. It lasted until she was 19. The verses are told from Leslie's perspective while the chorus is from Alanis' perspective.

      @GreetingsFineCitizen@GreetingsFineCitizen4 жыл бұрын
    • I've looked into this. I haven't seen any confirmation, from her or anyone else, that Leslie Howe is the subject of the song. In fact, I haven't even been able to find anything tangential. At best, some people have speculated about it, but I have yet to see anything remotely resembling a concrete link. If I'm being frank, I could very well see it being him. It sounds perfectly plausible, and I wouldn't be surprised. That said, if you don't have anything more than conjecture, that's a pretty serious allegation to be making.

  • Something that I never noticed is that the voices from the verses sections (old guy- young woman) can be exchangable. Althought it seemed very obvious that is the voice of an older guy, I always listened as how the young girl saw herself as "powerful" at the moment. To me, it sounds like she is singing from her own "inmaturity", as how she felt that it was her giving him power. That, to me, give the chorus much more power and even a sarcastic tone of superiority. Damn, this is a killer song.
