Scotty Kilmer Hey Scotty. Recent subscriber here.... I really enjoy the videos and appreciate the advice you’re giving all your viewers!! Keep up the good work man!
thanks for the support!
Scotty Kilmer There's one more advantage to a supercharger vs a turbo, they don't deaden the exhaust note like turbos do. So they sound a whole lot better. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Scotty Kilmer hey Scotty I like your videos and I was looking at this video about supercharger versus turbocharger I rather go with a naturally aspirated engine that way when those superchargers or turbochargers go you got to pay a lot of money to replace them you have no problem with a naturally aspirated engine but I do like ram-air what you think about that
Centrifugal superchargers, are nothing more than belt driven turbos. Granted, you can change pulley sizes. But they don't work from idle. Unlike a Rootes, blower. What you don't realise, a turbo is always spinning. And providing torque, with no loss to the motor. And next to no lag, properly sized, for the application. 400 ponies, at my back tyres, with a tame setup. More available quite, easily! Oh, and i am an "old school" guy. Impressed the shit out of me, especially the fuel economy! I'll take that at, $6.7275 a gallon. That is a 4.5 liter gallon. 8 liters, per 100 kilometers. I can get, less than that, at 110 kmph. Like, 7.8 litres, per 100.
The dealer supercharged me instead of my engine ................ ):

@@antreaskonstantinou8585 The more power thing is subjective. You can increase the Supercharger as well as the Turbo. They just have a different feel when accelerating. One is a pull feel the other is a push feel.

*Love the Whine of a Supercharger, but love the Spool of a Turbo* Life's great paradox.
why not both
Ya get a procharger, they are belt driven so you still get your whine but they use a turbo impeller type of system so you still get the spook up sound, and you can put a blow off valve on it. Psssssssh
oh i see what i mean....what i meant here using both....a supercharger for low bottom end and then boost kicks in at higher RPM ....twin charging as many call it
Vroooooom Psssshhhhhhh! ahahah I miss having a turbo with massive Blow off valve that scared people on the streets

He’s just got the voice that keeps you awake
I’ve installed both on my cars and for city driving I had more fun with supercharger with the instantaneous blast at the low end! But I did love my twin turbo Supra on the highway! That damn thing just squeezed top speed better than any supercharger I’ve ever used.
Here's what I think. Turbos are better for highway pulls and taking it to the dragstrip, but superchargers are way better for daily driving. Since you have turbo lag, when you're daily driving you're never really gonna get or feel that power unless you're doing random pulls on the highway, where as superchargers the power is always there and can get insane pulls just because you put your foot down a little while you were coming off a red light lol
Dear, Scuba Bro.. Please, don't melt me with radio waves. Please. Also, are you a mad scientist? I saw your KZhead channel....what r u? Lol 🤣 advanced radio wave Mathematics and twin turbo supras? ... Elon Musk? Lol
Got a Supra? Twin charge! Make it run both, the supercharger will help the turbo spool way faster (you can had bigger turbos) and when it does you’ll have more boost than a supercharger alone.
@@ProudMurican_PVT-GR137 , that would be sweet! At the time when I had it I couldn’t afford a setup like that but I sure as hell would have loved it if I did 😂👍🏻

Why not have *both?*
and nos.
l3arrett82 then you drive down the road and you hear a loud explosions and you have no engine.
having both is called superturbo. my car has that and it's the best, and twin charging is something completely different from a super turbo
Vw did it in one of their hatches, look it up on net....
then the only option is to hock the house and build a new motor with a supercharger.
I have had both. Turbos can be troublesome in regards to heat management. They add ALOT of heat up in the engine bay. Turbo exhaust manifold brings your intake air temps way up and can also melt some of your plastic parts that are near it. You can also heat soak your inter cooler really quick. Couple of hard runs and your car is now not fast anymore because your car is pulling timing to deal with the over heated air that’s causing the engine to knock due to pre ignition of the gas. Many of these issues you don’t have to deal with with a blower.
This!
I love learning with Scotty. I always wanted to know what the difference was between the two. Thanks Scotty!!
You know what's even simpler than a supercharger? NA baby 😎

That was a good presentation. It fairly covered the advantages and disadvantages of turbochargers vs mechanically driven superchargers. However, in recent years, much as been done to reduce turbo lag so it's less of a problem than it used to be even though it still exists.
So cool I love scottys videos been watching them since 2014 and I still learn new things every time I watch one! Thanks Scotty
Supercharger : gets boost faster. Turbo : gets more boost.
Micheal Dimitrick depends on the type of each you are using. A Whipple or Roots -type charger does move air pretty linearly with little lag but the ProCharger and similar radial style compressors increase boost exponentially so you still have to get the revs up high to get the full boost. A good twin or twin-scroll turbo will minimize the effects of turbo lag but they do add complexity to your setup.
Micheal, are you being sarcastic? A centrifigal blower doesn't make full boost till the entire engine revs sufficiently. A turbo spools up just as fast as rotational inertia allows it to. "More boost" has nothing to do with supercharger/turbo, but is determined by sc gearing or turbo sizing, and in either case there's a pop-off valve.
So y not both
@@331SVTCobra thats pretty much what I said.
@DissTrackReaction yep thats what i said :-)
There's pros and cons to both super and turbochargers. Just depends on what your goal is in mind.
more torque (power) in lower rpm.
Speed and power
Both are good choices for making good power. Some of the negatives about a supercharger is they put added stress on the crank and they take hp to spin them
Not really a big deal with centrifugal ones
I think I found the place where I will have a SC installed on my 2018 LX. Thanks, Scotty!
Nice, I like the instant power of a supercharger too and the whine it makes is music to your ears! You should have talked about the different between centrifugal superchargers and roots superchargers, personally I prefer a top mounted roots style supercharger to a centrifugal supercharger mounted at the front of the engine. I've seen some really cool complete roots style supercharger kits that even include a tuner for the engine made by companies like edelbrock that are made for late model car and made to fit under the stock hood. Recently I saw a video of a roots style supercharger being installed on a late model Camaro and it replaced the intake manifold and sat in the valley right there and was nice and low profile and it looked super clean, the engine looked almost stock when it was done you could barely tell it was there!
Got to say I love my twin turbos, definitely gets the job done.
Thank you Scotty. I will get a supercharged Viper instead of an NA one!
Thanks again Scotty, definitely pointed me in the right direction

My boss(very close to him, known him almost 15 years) has a nice collection of Mustangs, an 86 Blue Foxbody NA 4.6l pushing about 500hp, 92 red foxbody NA 5.0 pushing about 600hp(lifts front tires up on a good launch) and it is all setup for drag as far as the suspension goes, he has a couple more ranging between 95 and 2016 5.0' including a 2016 California edition 5.0 NA, As much as I love turbos and specifically superchargers. There is almost nothing like the sound of just motor rolling out all kinds of power.
Exactly.
Actually you can afford better than turbo and supercharged for peanuts its called vvc. Running at 7600 rpm is simply heaven in a na engine.

Scotty, you left out a few major points. A turbocharged car will make more HP per LB of boost than a supercharged car. Torque? A good turbo setup will significantly exceed the gross torque of a supercharged car. That being said, all the points made in the video are correct. A supercharger kit is MUCH easier to install and package than a turbo kit and the under hood temps are lower as well.
Sure a turbo will make a little more torque. But a supercharger does it a lot more quickly. I’ll take a supercharger anyday.
Love your videos Scotty.. thx Buddy...☺

I personally prefer superchargers over turbos in that it gives you instant down low acceleration that you can use in the real world. Even a small turbo starts to come on boost around 1600 RPM in a lot of cars and even higher in performance variants. I also want to convert my 928 to Miller cycle combustion and only a supercharger would provide enough pressure at idle to do so.
Hey Scotty my GMC Savana 1500 conversion van just arrived at three hundred and twenty thousand miles and runs like a monster should I put a supercharger on it to make it even more powerful
I own 2 cars. One has a Supercharger('05 Monte Carlo SS Supercharged w/3800 Eaton M90), the other a Turbocharger('05 Legacy GT w/2.5L EJ255 VF40 Turbo). Both are excellent, and with proper tuning you can have near-zero lag. I very much like the instant boost you get with the supercharger, and If one wants more power and their car can handle it, they can get a smaller pulley(Belt driven) for it for cheap and get extra boost. One advantage that Turbochargers over the Supercharger is they are not Parasitic and require no power. Thanks for the videos Mr Kilmer, enjoy them.
but you forgot to mention more frequent OIL changes with a turbo, where as a SC only needs oil change every 80-100k miles :), and parasitic is minimal

hey scotti, wouldn't having the engine spin the supercharger use some of its power to do the job ? its for that reason that i wouldve thought that a turbo is better for performance, especially today!
The exhaust spins the turbo, which is pushed by the engine
Keep it up ...I love it
you the man Scotty!!
Love my kompressor, supercharger all day.
Superchargers are slightly cheaper then a good turbo kit for my car at least. But if you want to make the most power turbo is the way it's easier for them to make more power then a supercharger plus if you see any races with 2 guys around same hp lvl turbo guy usually takes it since they make more power up top aka higher rpm lvls. I went supercharger on my car since I didn't want to make anything over 800 whp.
I doubt you make 800wheel
With a big turbo, e85, obvious tune and LTH, 800 rwhp is reasonable for a mustang
I love supercharger because I want that direct power and easier to maintain. My dad had a ‘70 Chevrolet SS 454 with a whipple supercharger. Only problem he had was the pulley but he had the car for a long time.
I saw your subs and thought I'd have a look on Social Blade. Man you have cracked the code, buddy. Keep it up!!
I'm just here to read the hate
Superchargers just sound better. You get the whine, and it doesn't muffle the exhaust like a turbo. And you made great points about it being a lot easier to install, and usually a bit cheaper. But for raw performance, a properly sized and tuned turbo will be better 9 times out of 10.
Scotty, I’m considering a supercharger by wynnjammer for my 2012 GMC pick up with a 4.3 L engine. It’s a 2012 sierra and it’s paid for with 60,000 miles. The engine is in good shape as I change the oil with synthetic blend about every 2000 miles. The kit cost about $2400 in the computer needs to be reprogrammed. I realized I made a mistake by buying the truck with the small engine. I talked to the people at Windjammer and he claimed an easy 80 or 90 horse power increase especially if I change the fuel injectors to a larger size. I really am doing this just to make it more drivable as acceleration is very poor.
I own a 2015 Audi s4 with the supercharged engine and it’s amazing!
Heck, now I want to super charge my tractor!
biggest flaw super-charger/roots type charger is it takes about 50 HP from engine just to keep it running
Depends on the size of the supercharger...
How much it returns tho?
How much the turbo gives without taking?
ctdesing turbo wont decrees HP, if interested Dave Freiburger from Hot Rod magazine made a apples to pears video about this matter on Engine Masters (KZhead)
Get a twin screw supercharger. All the advantages of the roots (they're very similar) but are more efficient.
