Pokémon investing requires great discipline. You do not get to open anymore. The only people who should be opening for profit are singles sellers. Buy sealed cases of booster boxes. Pick the best 3 sets of a block and forget about them. (Evolving Skies, Brilliant Stars, Celebrations) There is no need to look at any other product or singles for simple disciplined investing. . Cases are the most profitable and least space consuming.
Yeah, you’re right. Not sure I’m ready yet to invest that much cash into cases, but it may be something I get into eventually.
Insane how the popularity of the product is what makes a difference. 90 dollar booster box for evo skies up to 450 is an insane return. Pokémon is investable you’ll just have to pick wisely.
One reason I began focusing mostly on vintage high end like gold stars, Neo shinings, expedition/aquapolis/skyridge is because I think they will always hold their value or go up in value over time.

Love the fact that in 151, theres value in even the common cards, ex. Weepinbell reverse is a common, market as of right now is $1.49!

Such a cool series. I'd love to throw out an idea of expanding the portfolio to graded cards. For example, buying 3-4 raw cards - sending them off to BGS, PSA, or CGC and seeing how the values change when they come back and if the investment was worth it. I know you did this with the radiant eevee's once but I'd like to see it again with more variety.
Good suggestion. Yeah I was already thinking about doing this as a continuation of the flipping experiment I did. As I’m getting cards back and selling them, I’ll probably report on any gains/losses. Would that be interesting?

When i buy cards i tend to buy one little box (~10/15 bucks) which i keep sealed. Ive recently started, but i hope to build a little nostalgic collection like this. If it doesn't appreciate in value, i'll go on a fun nostalgia trip somewhere in 2040 😂
Yeah that’s how I tend to approach it. If it goes up, great. If not, I’m always up for ripping to packs!

Returns on pokemon investment just depends on so many factors- availability, popularity, reprints etc making it,as you said, very hard to say when and by much would your “profit” be.

So in other words, this makes me seriously question investing in Pokemon at all. I think you need a solid 7-10 years to see a decent return, and by decent probably not a ton...So in other words, this is likely not a great investment. You should only buy what you like and collect as you have the money to spend. Sealed product just doesn't have amazing return in a decent time span. It will take decades
Not quite, although I definitely agree about collecting what you like and not overspending. However, if for example you have $1,000 to invest and you put it into a typical investment vehicle funded through the stock market and we’re fortunate enough to have 10% growth every year for 10 years and with no additional contributions you would have about $2,600. If you instead split up the same $1,000 across buying a handful of modern etbs there’s a reasonable chance those etbs could double even by 5 years as the sets go out of print. My main point being that over a 10 year span sealed product will probably at least be comparable, especially with a variety of products. I also agree with the video conclusion that it is at least probably a safer bet with the stock market, but at the same time every market could drastically change at any time, it’s all almost entirely speculative.
It really depends what you buy, I've shifted my focus to certain sets and items such as PC etb cases, VMAX climax, 151 eng and jpn, S&S BBs, Japan BBs, Evolving Skies etc
