  • Tasmania is now getting crazily expensive now too. Hobart I think would def equal Sydney or be close too it, especially in the rental world. we pay currently in prospect vale (a suburb of launceston for a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, 2 living area plus dining room house $550 wk, for the same in Hobart, in the same condition as our house it would cost approx $1000+ a week. the rent here in launceston for the average house in the last 12 months has jumped $100wk.in werribee (a suburb in the western suburbs of melb, where I used to live), you can currently get a beautiful 2 storey home with the same things as our place for $390+ we always thought vic was more expensive for rent than here, but now vic is much cheaper.

    • Thanks for your comment Debbie. I've just uploaded a video on rent prices across Australia! Yes, Melbourne has dropped in price lots for rent, apparently because of so many people leaving the state because of the lockdowns to live elsewhere, lowering the demand. It's actually the cheapest of all the capitals now! And Hobart has shot up, like some of the other cities.

  • Melbourne weather is only ever variable during late spring and summer, where temp differences can really be felt. Outside of those months, it's stable and consistently cool-cold. Melbourne is also largely colder than Sydney even though they only vary by 5 degrees across median temperatures because of dew point. Melbourne has lower dew point than Sydney which means Melbourne is not humid compared to Sydney. Dew point affects actual perceived "feels like" temperature. 15 degrees in Sydney may feel like 15/17 where as 15 degrees in Melbourne, can feel like below 10 degrees.

  • Those maximum, and minimum temps are quite misleading in the case of Sydney and Melbourne and the difference is not small at all. They report this maximum of 19 degrees for Melbourne; it gets to 19 for half an hour and drops to freezing cold temps, and when it is 19 in Sydney, it is 19 for hours and does not drop much.

    • I suggest Monash University (if you can afford it). Monash is known for mainly science, like engineering and chemistry. Deakin is good for biology related subjects. Universities here are very expensive. Victoria University and Swinburne are two of the most affordable ones, also very laid back. I went to Swinburne and loved every bit of it (= I live in Melbourne, so I can only suggest the best of Melbourne. If you're moving to Sydney, I suggest you ask someone from Sydney. Sydney is known for being expensive. I stayed there when I was 19, and I was shocked students had *two* jobs to pay their rent. Sydney is all about competition. People in Sydney can only survive by working, there's not much work, life, balance. Sydney isn't ideal for students due to the high living cost. Everything is 8x more expensive in Sydney. It's way more crowded and humid than Melbourne. I personally think Melbourne has become very expensive over the years. I moved to Melbourne from New Zealand 15 years ago and it has definitely been more crowded since then.

  • I've lived and worked in both cities and they both have pros and cons. Sydney is gorgeous around the harbour and the surf beaches, but once you get away from that it's pretty average. Even Sydney people don't visit friends on the other side of the bridge or "god forbid", the west. Melbourne has more events, sports, great food, arts, culture and fashion and there's always something on. I brought up my family in Melb and my 20 something kids were able to get good educations/trades, jobs and buy their first homes within 30 minutes of the CBD without the bank of mum and dad, something that they probably wouldn't have been able to do in Sydney. And yes the weather is warmer in Sydney but I always say that when people complain about the weather they aren't dressed for it.

    • How dull and bleak indeed. You’re the first Melbournian I’ve come across to admit this and I applaud your honesty. There is such a level of arrogance with Melbournians when it comes to their city. The desire to be the best, to outdo Sydney is pathetic. Sydneysiders don’t care about Melbourne nor do we talk about it. My friend recently moved to Melb for work and she is tells me that they are constantly competing with Sydney and talking about it. She can’t wait for her contract to end to come back. • Just visited Boring Brisbane, Dirty Sydney, and Pretentious Melbourne.. among the 3 bad cities, I prefer Sydney.. it still has more character than the other 2. Sydney still has more to offer in everything.. I think it has a more balanced life.. Melbourne is not even far off from Sydney in terms of expenses. So I think it’s expensive for what it is.. If you’re even thinking of moving to Queensland, better live in the Gold Coast.. Overall, the US is still waaaaayyy better in everything. The prices you’ll pay in Australia, are safe & nice states already in the US. So why bother moving on the other side of the planet?
