  • If the bolt and nut starts digging into the buoy foam, you might consider adding a large stainless steel washer between the buoy and the bolt/nut.

    • Go for a drive out in the country, and you'll typically pass several boats for sale, sometimes with trailers and motors included. While a jonboat wouldn't be ideal for crabbing, I've seen them for sale many times, with trailer and motor for about $500. I think you'll find a small aluminum V-hull or runabout for around the same price, although a motor might not be included, or need work.

  • i like a two buoy set up-kinda like deadliest crabs-but smaller-but alas i crab from a boat-good perspective from a kayak-less bulk-always wear a life jacket!!!

    • I plan to run the rope through pool noodles, I saw hot pink ones at Walmart the other day for $3. I'd probably keep my bullet bouy on there too.

  • I also use this same setup , but I like to insert a glow stick into the end of the PVC pipe for better visibility in low light situations.

  • Nice setup Pk.

  • Instead of buying glow sticks forever, which are often bad for the environment, maybe look into rechargeable LED lights, you could get one that blinks that you attach to the end of the pipe.

    • I don't like glow sticks because they only last so long, but they are pretty fool proof in this application. And easy... who wants to mess with recharging MORE STUFF nowadays. You'd need a whole charging station in the garage, with one charger for every light, unless you want to babysit everything for a week, every time you go crabbing. Perhaps there's some waterproof lights that run on a single AA battery, and then you could pop 8 batteries in a charger when you get home.

  • I've never used one of these, but I would have assumed the pointy end of the float goes down.

  • How does the rope attach to this setup? Do you tie the knot to the ring? I’d like to weave the end of the rope into a loop and click right to the hook after the swivel.

    • I tie the rope to a decoy clip and clip it onto the giant ring.

  • Wonder how that swivel setup will hold up after being hooked 10-20 times 🤔.

    • Yes, I'd imagine it's going to rub it down. Going to have to put a giant washer between buoy/bolt.

      @oregonlife@oregonlife Жыл бұрын
  • One possible upgrade here would be to add a washer to the pvc pipe between the bolt and the foam to keep the bolt from rubbing against and wearing down the buoy.

    • good point. I'm going to fix that overlooked issue.

      @oregonlife@oregonlife Жыл бұрын
    • @@oregonlife Another solution might be to add a PVC 4 way elbow fitting into the equation on each side of the buoy instead of using the bolt. You would have to glue it on or use a threaded version but it would keep you from having to use the stainless or drilling holes in the PVC.

    • That's what I was thinking, so I googled it and it looks like half of the people rig theirs down, and half rig the point up. To me, the pointy end of a float always goes down into the water. Like a fishing float. Otherwise, they fall over sideways.

      @hxhdfjifzirstc894@hxhdfjifzirstc894 Жыл бұрын
    • Right the pointed end would have less drag in current but all the commercially rigged one you see with a stick and flag set up are pointed end up , go figure.
