CHA-CHA-CHA Do you think this is really preparational footwork, or just manierism, adjustment of risky position in the piste, or to feel more comfortable? How much is it really confusing for modern sabre-vielding opponent?

why would this be confusing? literarily just pivot on your feet to face your opponent. they have to make a huge action compared to your small pivot...

Pivoting to face an opponent on a narrow piste limits your ability to use footwork since to go backwards you then need to correct your direction with each step. Tbh probably the best thing to is move to match their position so it's back to normal.
