Environmental racism explained

Environmental racism is the active policies and practices that expose environmental hazards and risks to communities based on race or ethnicity. Environmental racism has been recognized as a significant issue in the United States and traces from the movement date since the 1960's when Black communities were actively being used as dumping grounds for corporations.
The history of environmental racism in the United States can be traced back to the early 20th century, when policies and practices were put in place that created environmental inequities in communities of color. For many Black, Indigenous, and POC - the phrase the environment isn't racist is used as a divisive phrase for many conservative groups. Nature is, in fact, not racist, nor are their hierarchies in nature. What is, in fact, racist are the policies, practices, and people who have prohibited communities of color from having access to clean air, water, and food.
The Civil Rights Era brought renewed attention to the issue, and the emergence of the environmental justice movement in the 1980s and 1990s helped to raise awareness and galvanize action. The federal government has taken some steps to address the problem, but environmental racism remains a persistent issue that requires ongoing attention and action.

  • Such a good video. It tears me up when people don't realize the complexities of oppression, or even believe in it at all.

  • Someone should really show this to the tens of thousands of Latin Americans desperate to get into America atm, maybe they'll change their plans, though probably not right? ;).
