CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Coach Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) assures his group of high school players that he will do anything to help them get to college.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The true-life story of a coach who tries to teach his players that there's more to life than basketball is brought to the screen in this sports drama. Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) was once a star player on the Richmond High School basketball team in Richmond, CA, and years later, after establishing himself in publishing and marketing, he returns to the school and to the team as the new basketball coach. Carter quickly sees that his work is cut out for him -- the team is having an awful season, and their fights off the court are more decisive than their play on the court. While Carter wants to make the Richmond cagers into a winning team, he also wants a lot more -- to teach the boys to respect themselves and one another, and that they must excel in the classroom as well as in the gymnasium. Under Carter's guidance, the team turns their losing season around, with the state title a genuine possibility. However, when Carter learns that a number of his players have let their grade point averages slip below 2.3, as mandated in a contract he entered into with the students, he decides to lock the team out of the gym and send them into study hall until their marks improve. Carter's plan quickly becomes a subject of controversy among parents and team boosters, and their objections are soon picked up by the local news media, many of whom are not sympathetic to Carter's belief that his players must have goals beyond college ball or the NBA. Coach Carter also features Rob Brown and Rick Gonzalez as members of the team, and R&B diva Ashanti in her film debut as the girlfriend of one of Carter's players.

This coach punishes students with good grades honoring their end, cause "basketball is a team sport." so i guess they were supposed to score test points for the bad students because he's willing to "reward" (punish) the good students by ruining their possible athletic scholarship over it. dumb coach. And if: everybody is equal everybody should be treated equally there's no objective morality income inequality is bad, then... 1 why do we need students listening to teachers? Isn't that discrimination? 2 why should anything political, moral, or good, etc. be taught...it's just the SUBJECTIVE opinion of teachers and/or other authority figures isn't it? 3 why should any teacher or anybody in the school system make more than the median income (when factoring in that they get paid for 9 months work, with summers off or gaining extra pay, and have many benefits/retirement stuff etc. the average teacher gets more than the average person sooner or later, usually sooner). 4 If "education" is a right that should be free to all, why not demand they work for free? P.S. I'm pro-education, but modern schools mostly don't have a full or accurate understanding of what real education is, how to grade who is educated, and how to deal with students with different interests/abilities/needs etc. Check out the main vid on kzhead.info for starters instead of starting a youtube argument, thanks ;)

  • Amazing. A man who genuinely cares for his students and their well being. He doesn't blame anyone but the students. Sure they exist in a crappy system, and it's obvious that the teachers there don't care about them, but in the end it's still up to them to decide what they want to do. He's probably the only figure in their lives who believed in them and gave them the tough love needed for them to succeed in life and the whole movie just has people making him out to be the bad guy for it.

    • Peter Parker Unfortunately, the system is worse than that, because the system creates discrimination in order to "motivate" the rest into not becoming like the portion of the population that's being pushed around. Be it a school, a county, or the very country, that's how our world "works", I wouldn't call say that it works because it would be cynical to say the world is heading the right way.

It's easy for me to say with my University degree "don't do crime". But I suspect that it would be much harder for me to say that if I was poor, black, and living in a crime-filled neighborhood with no jobs and no opportunities. It's a two way street. Black communities have to take personal responsibility and the state has to do more to ensure that people have other options and know they have other option than crime.

  • We need a coach carter in every class but more importantly in every house hold. I was told growing up that I was dumb and that I would never amount to be anything. In high school, it became clear that you only got positive attention if you were talented. If you were deemed smart you’d go to B track and if you were average C or D track. Only one teacher told me to go to college, but I told him I wasn’t smart enough and he didn’t push. It wasn’t until I was on a bus and heard a Mexican comic with a college degree say that he didn’t want to be a statistic. Ultimately, it took me 10 years to graduate college but I am thankful I did because I see my purpose. I worked at the YMCA and got to encourage teenagers to not only go to college but the best college they could get into and most of the ones I have spoken to have and have began graduating. Finally, a co-worker that I’d encourage daily to go to college finally graduated. A co-worker that is a janitor took my advice and got a trade. I see how beautiful his life has become. People have been bamboozled to think that they don’t need college but here is a stat for you 80% or millionaires have a degree. Now, you can go with your gut and not go to college but remember that you are 80% likely to fail. Why? Because college teaches you how to finish something with lack of money, sleep, social life and time. That’s what a business requires. But if you can do that in college, you always translate it into anything else.

    @alcast7444@alcast74445 жыл бұрын
    • Not trying to downplay college but there's plenty of people that learned trades instead of going to college and are making more money than most people with masters degrees and people that went to Ivy League schools. It all depends what you want to do in life.

  • One of my favorite movies of all time. I wish not all but most teachers to be just like coach Ken Carter who actually cares about the students and their well being. Every teacher should watch this movie and if this impacts most teachers to do better with their students, the life of most Americans will improve. The same goes for the parents as well as politicians who do not appreciate the gains they got.

  • Lord this man had to fight to help these kids and he fought and cared about their futures more than just about everybody, including the kids themselves. These are the kinds of educators/coaches these (edit: all ) kids deserve. Though you don't necessarily have to go to college to be successful, you can learn a trade and make good bank. But if you are looking for a career in a sport, playing that sport in college is the next logical step towards that goal.

Some of them dropped thinking that she was only doing this so that could have some profit over them. They couldn't see the big picture. She loved those kids and she couldn't allow herself in seeing those kids going to prison, stealing or having a poor life and do nothing. She didn't received a single penny in helping those... but she received love from some of them... and hatred...

  • I love this movie so goddam much! The message is awesome, and the acting is just as good. Coach Carter grew up in this neighborhood and turned down a higher paying job to coach at this school just so that he could help these boys. He faces opposition from just about everyone along the way, but he sticks to his guns, and would rather quit, as seen later on, than stay and coach for a school that thinks winning basketball games is more important than going to college. His son even follows in his footsteps, withdrawing from a much better school just so that he could come here and play for his father, amending one of the contracts and saying he'll maintain a 3.5 GPA. That gets upped to a 3.7 before his father agrees, but it still shows strength of character from both of them.

  • This movie is a good teaching tool for any young athlete trying to 'make it big' and pursuing their dream in pro sports, in this case, basketball. While some may have the skills to succeed as a professional athlete and be able to attain it so early, having fair grades in school usually result in abundance of choices when one career path may not work out, whether it is sports, music, acting, or any sort of entertainment that relies so much on luck, similar to winning a lottery. It's not just about hitting books or getting straight A's in school, but it's a discipline that you can get from learning and having that patience to be taught by the best of the best, beyond high school, when most of us are introduced to being on our own for the first time, whether one is in college or in a vocational environment in learning from the professionals or certified teachers/coaches. Coach Carter (Samuel Jackson) brings up race, but as a mixed person, it's more of the generational issue where many are drawn to the rags to riches success stories, and making tens and hundreds of million dollars are now common in major sports in the US.

  • He is a Coach, not a teacher. I was coaching at a low performing high school in Los Angeles County. I gave each of my athletes a weekly homework sheet to have their teachers verify that homework was being turned in on time. Only 1 student-athlete was able to get it signed. The teachers said, "it's not part of my job." Some got angry and complained to the Principal. I set up mandatory study hall for 2 hours M-Th even off season. 100% of my Seniors received scholarship offers. I left after 2 seasons. That school is a warehouse for kids.
