  • For the "how do you get down" joke here's the explanation: DOWN is also a NOUN that means FEATHERS. In English, many PILLOWS are made of DOWN. So, you can't get feathers from an elephant/camles, (what ever animal you use for the set up), you can only get them from a bird, and DOWN feathers, usually refer to those from a duck or goose.....I hope that helps

I actually remember spending a long time as a kid obsessing over that joke until it clicked for me, but when he told it I realized I'd forgotten it again 😅 I think the problem is that we try to find the play on words in the animal names, when it's the word down that has the double meaning

  • Cuckoo Clock of Doom is one of the few Goosebumps books that, as a kid, I thought had a genuinely happy ending. The sister was just tiny Satan incarnate. and I remember being 1000% down with her being erased from existence. Especially since the protagonists life immediately improved by not having her in it (like when the spell reverses they go through all the moments she fucked with him and her not being there turned them into legitimately happy memories). "It's A Wonderful Life" but reversed. And if her and the parents behaviour is still as infuriating as I remember it being, I'm totally still willing to stand by 9 year old me's assessment that the kid getting deleted was a net positive for all involved. But I'm also an only child so hey what do I know?

    @psychoticchaos@psychoticchaos2 жыл бұрын
    • As someone who was tortured by my 2 older brothers on a daily basis (With my psycho mother's blessing) to the point I CANNOT have contact of any kind with them now because I get so triggered...you can't convince me that "getting your abuser that you can never escape from erased from existence" is anything but the most awesome of endings!

  • The goosebumps books I always liked the most as a kid were the “give yourself goosebumps” a choose your own adventure-style story. Those are pretty cool, but it’s hard to summarize the plot. Unless you make a chart of every choice. There are usually 20 endings to each, some of them being incredibly stupid.

  • The nitpicker in me saw the British cover and immediately went "For a given value of "original", anyway." I've read Say Cheese in the British version, and one of the characters calls someone a "bloke". I figured I needed to find the American ones after that. I have PDFs of the original Goosebumps and 2000, as well as physical copies of Graphix, Give Yourself Goosebumps, 2000, and British and American versions of the original run. This is beginning to sound like a brag, but I will rarely get another organic chance to talk about Goosebumps again.

I think the book also began to describe how she noticed the kid looked off like he was green and rotting I think and something about the visual of this rotting child similar in age to our character (and readers likely including myself in this case) just actually scared me enough to close the book for a short period

I don't consider myself to be an avid reader but a goosebumps fan for sure and definitely subbed because your take on novels intrigue me. Night in Terror Tower and Haunted School are up in my two favorites from my childhood and I'm glad they carried over for you too! Keep up the great work Gavin!!

  • I read some 20 books in a month last year and I absolutely loved them. Of course the writing is very basic and the characters are almost copy paste soulless people from each other, it can get quite repetitive... But I still found them great. Some books are really well crafted like The Haunted Mask, there is some very nice, suspenseful moments like in Night of The Living Dummy and even some emotional moments as well like in The Ghost Next Door ("summer always seem to be slower when you are dead. Maybe that's why no one awsered my letters", something like that). Not to mention the twists. Most of them are pretty good, like Shocker on Shock Street. Of course Middle Grade came a long way since the original series, but Goosebumps will always have a special place in my heart, even more so now that I discovered they are still at least good as an adult.

  • I read Ghost Next Door as a very young kid, long before I had heard of or seen 6th sense, and it's ending still sticks out in my mind as being one of the best of the series. It's what I love and want in my ghost stories - a longing, a sadness, the scsriness being from the haunting of memories and the resolution being characters growing emotionally.

  • Thanks so much for the monumental effort it took for you to read this entire series! I never read them as a kid -- I was too old by then -- but I read a bunch of them recently, then stopped -- just couldn't take the constant false cliffhangers, etc. -- but now I have a few more to read that I can be pretty confident will be worthwhile based on your recommendations. I also appreciate the important points you make regarding body image in these books. Children's lit has certainly come a long way in the generation since these were written.

    @miriamfalk7139@miriamfalk71392 жыл бұрын
    • Thank you so much Miriam! Yeah the focus on body image was so off putting, but fortunately there are still some rare gems in the Goosebumps series, and the ones I ended up loving again are the ones with the least amount of body-shaming and false cliffhangers, so I hope you enjoy those ones too!

  • there has been, many times in my life-- especially once i had my own money, that i thought about buying all the books in the series that i didn't own. i think i have like, 6? & they are not in any kind of order. i know i have dead house & the snowman book, be careful what you wish for & the first deep trouble as well as a couple of the choose your own adventure books, which were always my favorite as a kid but i never stayed in goosebumps long. i think i started reading them around 1st or 2nd grade then got into the fear street stuff b/c goosebumps wasn't scary enough for me. i've started reading them to my kids around halloween & im glad i found this video ( i found it shortly after you posted it, it just took me about 2 weeks to watch the whole thing! ) b/c i was thinking about buying them up. glad i didn't b/c i think i would have LOST IT judging by your slow decline... i think i'll watch your full ranking video and maybe pick the top 10 or 15 to buy for my own collection & save myself some money & a lot of headaches. great video! this is the first i've seen of your stuff but i plan to peruse your back catalogue!

  • The ghost next door is honestly more sad than scary, especially the ending where she waves goodbye to her neighbour and reunites with her family in heavan. Cried like a baby the first time I read it. But it also had one of the most genuinely terrifying scenes I've ever read, that being the "Dream" sequence that happens around half way through, where she wakes up to her room engulfed in flames. And you get this vivd description of the fire surrounding her bed and the wall paper peeling off and the sound of crackling and she wakes up and it's like, ok fine. It was a dream but then at the eand you learn that, no. It wasn't a dream. She literally DIED thag night. So either that dream was her last waking moments before she died and woke up as a ghost, or the literal moment of her death. That shit freaked me out so much more than anything else in these books. ... Well almost everything.
