  • Watching Skins for the first time: Effy is one of the most enchanting, mysterious characters you can’t help to fall in love with. Now as an adult: a very sad child that didn’t get proper treatment, and would probably be very difficult to be around.

The whole cast of characters in S1 - S4 were absolute train wrecks, and that's putting it lightly. But damn, was Gen 1 a complete mess of characters surrounded by a deeper mess of characters.

  • Both Effy and Tony are perfect examples of kids where the cool image they've drawn up is just a cover-up for a lot of insecurities and detachment within the family. Especially with Effy, there was an incapability of handling love because everyone loved her for all the wrong reasons, and not the person she truly was, except for Tony. She was enigmatic, but very troubled, but everyone was so enthralled by her image that it became toxic for her and the ones that loved her. To me, this show is one of the few shows to have realistic teenage characters with a lot of layers in the storylines, the third generation excluded (when the show sort of became a caricature of itself).

  • It's common for people who have had selective mutism to emulate the voices around them when they do speak. It's also a common symptom of a few mental health disorders including BPD which she very much shows symptoms of throughout the show. Her voice reflects those around her, it's another way to try and protect herself, likely without her even noticing.

EUPD also can have selective mutism because of trauma. @savspicious@savspicious11 ай бұрын
    • Imho the main reason she's an involving character is that she has a pretty face. People get easily "hooked on" pretty faces and they tend to see them as more likable or more interesting. If her character was played by the same actress (meaning the acting would be the same), but with the face of someone less attractive (for example of someone like Pandora) she would receive much less positive reaction from the audience. In fact it would be hard to do it, as one of the key features of Effy is that she is pretty and she knows it well as it enables her to manipulate everyone around her, because people find it hard to resist her. I mean just look at what kind of actresses are usually shown in youtube shorts or those self-made music videos (Idk how it's called, but it's done by pretty much anonymous creators who take a song, for example Lana del Rey's song and play it to a video that consits of video footages coming from different movies). It's never actresses like Judy Dench, Meryl Streep, Maggie Smith etc., it's always pretty, rather young (in their 20s-30s) and very feminine women with either very sensual or inncocent and girly faces such as Brigitte Bardot, Marliyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn, Monica Belucci, young Brooke Shields, Winona Ryder etc. And as much it is not fair to favorise people for their looks, we can't help it, that's just how our brain works. I know that some people will say that beauty might be sometimes a curse, but pretty people are on average treated better, they can get away with worse things and we have more empathy for them- they even get shorter sentences (again, on average) in courts! We are able to forgive pretty Effy more than we would forgive someone who is less cute.

So BPD, Bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, OCD, etc. all make a person neurodivergent. So actually, using YOUR logic, in that respect they are in the same category as ADHD. The difference, aside from the actual symptoms, is that BPD develops due to trauma, whereas ADHD is typically something people are born with.
